WHEREAS, Marion E. Klingel and her husband Ted moved to their
home on Love Road in 1942, thereby becoming one of the original settlers of
Grandyle Village; and
WHEREAS,
her service to this community began almost immediately as she became
the primary dispatcher for the Grand Island Fire Company using a hand-cranked
telephone, and by writing a neighborhood column for the Island Dispatch where she ultimately became Editor; and
WHEREAS,
that community service continued uninterrupted for some 60 years,
including leadership in the Brownies and Girl Scouts, working as the Town’s
reporter for the Buffalo News, and
serving as Town Historian; and
WHEREAS, Marion was named Erie County Senior Citizen of the Year in 1991,
in addition to having been recognized by the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce
as a Citizen of the Year on four separate occasions; and
WHEREAS,
her numerous activities included memberships in the Zonta Club, the
Grand Island Women’s Republican Club, a life membership in the Grand Island
Fire Company, and honorary memberships in the Grand Island Teachers Association
and the West River Homeowners Association; and
WHEREAS,
Marion E. Klingel died on Friday, April 20, 2001 at the age of 94;
now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, that in celebration of the 100th
Anniversary of her birthday, which will occur on February 16, 2007, and in
recognition of her diverse contributions to this community and its residents,
the Town Board of the Town of Grand Island hereby dedicates the Grand Island Town
Common in memory of Marion E. Klingel;
and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this same Town Board agrees to
erect an appropriate sign or monument in commemoration of this dedication at a
ceremony to be scheduled when weather permits.
