Very sorry to hear Kevin "Skee" Zoldowski, Class of 1970, can't make the "Friday Night Under the Lights" game. Norm Brady was in for a commemmorative t-shirt and told us the bad news. Skee, thanks for being one of the first sponsors of the event, we will make sure to send you a program. Ran into Andrew Dale, Class of 2013 and football alumni at Tops and he is pumped for the game! If you have a jersey, wear it!

With yet another accident at the corner of Fix Road and Baseline Road on Tuesday, July 15th, I had to go check it out. As you approach the intersection, driving on Fix there is a big warning sign, 50 feet out, of the upcoming stop. At the corner is a GIANT stop sign with the warning, "Cross Traffic Does Not Stop". That is on both sides of the intersection. I'm thinking...you have to be blind not to see that. Apparently not, as I was sitting there a big silver pick-up truck came roaring by, headed west and rolled right around the corner onto Baseline headed north. WHAT? Those are the people I hope get hit, which is dumb because (a) it's not nice and (b) innocent people get hurt. Town Highway Superintendent JT Tomkins reported that the stop signs were added approximately four years ago. The GI Fire Company reports that there were eight calls in 2012, eight in 2013 and three YTD for 2014. That does not include "Sheriff only" incidents. If you would like to tell me about your experiences either at this intersection or any other that you deem unsafe, email jodi@giecom.net.

Island Tid-Bits...    The 1957 Master Plan proposed the ultimate development of a town civic center as well as a town beach and park. The town beach was suggested to be built on 40 acres in the southeast corner of Buckhorn across from Navy Island. It also had the suggestion of building a high school at the corner of Whitehaven and Baseline, a junior high on west Love Rd., near Alt and the addition of 5 new elementary schools. The school district ended up buying 100 acres on Ransom Road for $40,000 in 1960.

This pretty young lady is Alivia Manzo pictured posing at the GI Fire Hall with the very life-like mascot. Alivia turned 10 on July 4th and her mom says "she is the most patriotic little girl you'll ever meet. She couldn't be more proud to celebrate her birthday with America every year!!"

Sports Notes: From the Dick Bessel Race, congrats to Megan Karpie who came in first in the 19-24 group and 4th overall, and to Nick Masiello first in the 19-24 age group and 3rd overall. The Niagara Gazette announced their 2014 All-Area High School Softball team today and three GI players made the cut. Junior pitcher Alley Cutting made the team with season highlights of two no-hitters and one perfect game. Alley was also named to first team All-NFL and NFL Pitcher of the Year. As position players, Leah Geis and Scarlett Whitman were named honorable mention.

I just rediscovered the stories of Ruth Stahl, our "Treasures" and "Features" writer for many years. Starting in the fall of 2000 and continuing on until the fall of 2009, Ruth wrote about Grand Island history and interesting stories of the time. Ruth died in April of 2013. Take a look back to learn the stories of the past.

Island Tid-Bits...    In 1919, the New York Central Railroad bought a track of land that went along the south side of Staley Road from East River to West River. The railroad planned to place a bridge at either end and a terminal at the intersection of Staley and Baseline Roads. The purpose was to shave three hours off the New York-Chicago trip. Sometime in the mid 1930's the plan was scratched at the railroad offices. On a map from 1938 the railroad still owned the property.
As next week is the 56th annual Lions Club picnic where over 900 guests are treated to all sorts of fun, I thought a mention of an article from July 26, 1961 was interesting. The article title is "Lions are Hosts to 60 Children on Grand Island". The event was at the Buffalo Launch Club and mentions "the day's fun included games, prizes, boat rides and plenty of pop, hot dogs and other picnic foods." The Lions current event chair Annette Boies-Lobl mentioned that the club began in 1957, so the 1961 event had to be one of the first.

Island Tid-Bits...    I've been coming across some interesting information while looking through old files at Town Hall. The population here was 1048 in 1890, down to 626 in 1930 and bounced from 1055 in 1940 to 3090 in 1950. The last ten year stretch showed a 193% increase which was more than double the percent increase of any other town in Erie County. The first Master Plan published in 1957 projected our population in 1970 to be 20,000 while the actual was 13,977. In 1971 it was noted that by 1990, 40,000 people should be living here.

An article in today's Niagara Gazette by Michele DeLuca features islander and veteran Mike Shanley working with the Dog Tags Niagara program. The program puts undesirable dogs from the no-kill, Niagara County SPCA with veterans learning to cope with their past experiences. The dogs work with the vets and learn good behavior and the vets get the affection of the dogs and satisfaction of helping the animal. For more information see the Dog Tags Niagara web page.

Take a look at Don Fancher's Magic Marble Towel Holders for a fun gift for Mother's or Father's Day. He has many towel holder designs, and a key rack, all hand made out of oak. There is also a "slim" design made out of unfinished poplar that you can paint with your own design.

It certainly was a quiet week around town. Seems like a lot of people have had enough of winter and headed south to warm their bones. Hopefully this is truly the end of nasty weather and spring will stick around for a while.

Happy birthday tomorrow, April 11th to Roman Jurga. Happy wedding anniversary to Gene and JoAnn Hasselbeck on Saturday, April 12th and happy birthday on April 12th to Amy Bidell. Happy birthday on April 13th to Betty Killian turning 91 years young and to Grace Aswad. Happy birthday to Dan Robinson & Nicholas Aronica on Monday, April 14th.

The residents that rallied to oppose the Light House Pointe rental apartment project made enough fuss that the developer cancelled the public hearing scheduled for April 21st. Over 400 units were planned to be located on the 45 acre site. I can't even imagine what it would be like driving down Whitehaven Rd. with that amount of units added to the neighborhood. Especially after the Gunn Creek subdivision is begun.

The Niagara Gazette had some nice things to say about the GIHS Softball and Baseball teams in an article on Saturday, April 5th. On both teams, pitching is expected to be the key. The girls are led by junior Alley Cutting with help from senior Jillian Sheehan and junior Scarlet Whitman. The boys are led by senior Quinn Corrao and junior Josh Barrett. If the weather cooperates they might even be able to play a game or two.

The GIHS has scheduled the opening of the new "Gene Masters Field" for Friday, Sept. 19th, under the lights! The GIHS Alumni Association is working with Athletic Director Jon Roth to make this a most auspicious event. Tentative plans include food and fun starting at 5:00 p.m. and a 7:00 p.m. game time. We are looking for former players that are interested in helping out by getting the word out to their team mates. Contact me at jodi@giecom.net so we can get this party started!

A full lunar eclipse will occur early Tuesday morning, darkening the full moon and possibly tinting it a reddish hue that causes some to call it a "Blood Moon". Grand Island is located just on the edge of seeing the full eclipse. The total eclipse begins around 3 a.m. and ends around 4:30 a.m., with the moon at its dimmest at 3:46 a.m.

Our photographer Mary Stewart has again won awards from the Pixoto website for March. This photo of chocolates was in the top 20% for the week of March 23rd and top 10% for the day of March 25th. Nice job Mary!

I stopped in to see two new Island businesses this week. I met Gary Herman, one of the owners of Bottle Junction located at the Grand Island Plaza. The container redemption store employees are very personable and fast! They are open Monday - Friday (10-5) and Saturday (9-3).        The soon to be built Miracle League playground will have a unique anti vandalism device installed. It will deter youth between the ages of 12 and 25 from loitering between dusk and dawn. The "Mosquito Alarm" is an electronic device which emits a sound with a very high frequency that can typically be heard by most people in that age group who still have sensitive hair cells in their inner ears. The sound is likened to fingernails dragged across a chalkboard or a pesky mosquito buzzing in your ear. It is a bit controversial, with critics saying it discriminates against young people. The noise can be heard by animals and babies, but is only bothersome to children older than 12 and becomes unbearable after several minutes. I love the concept...wonder if I can set it up in my living room. Just kidding!

While trying to verify a co-workers claim that it was 66 degrees in January last year, I came across the Farmer's Almanac prediction for the Western New York winter of 2013-2014..."Winter will be slightly milder than normal, with near-normal precipitation and below-normal snowfall in most of the region." Really? Here is the Almanac's current forecast, "Feb 9-18: Sunny, then sprinkles and flurries, turning mild." Doesn't seem to be anything like what we have going on. A fun fact, on this day in 1984 it was 61 degrees. See Buffalo records webpage
