The staff of Assemblyman Angelo J. Morinello (R,C-Niagara Falls) will kick off mobile office hours for the new year at Grand Island Town Hall, 2255 Baseline Road on Tuesday, January 3 and again later in the month on Tuesday, January 17 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Residents and elected officials are welcome and encouraged to stop by to address any ideas or concerns.

Island resident Michael Adamshick was featured in a story in the Buffalo News this week. He donates to many outlets yearly and this year to the Buffalo News Neediest Fund, donated 12 winter jackets, six boys and six girls. At this time the Fund is excepting only cash donations.

St. Timothy Childcare center is hosting a Breakfast with Santa! This is an annual fundraiser that benefits our Childcare Center and will be held on Saturday, September 17th with seatings at 9 and 10:30 and a sing-along at 10. Photo opportunities and interactions with Santa, crafts, and big-ticket-item raffles will also be available. Breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, and fruit for $7 per adult and $6 per child 3 and up. Our Christmas Eve service will be held at 5 PM this year. We hope you can come celebrate with us!

Six girls high school lacrosse players from Western New York were recently selected to the U.S. Lacrosse All-American team. Included was Olivia Fox, Grand Island, 12: She leaves the Vikings as one of their best players in program history. She holds the record for career assists (101) and is third in goals (91). This past season Fox had 48 goals, led Section VI in assists with 42, and was sixth in the section in points with 90. Her play led Grand Island to the Class C title, its first sectional championship.

He was there with his Mom and said he loves history and really enjoyed the 4th grade tour of Town Hall and River Lea. He spoke with GI Historical Society President Curt Nestark and shared that he is participating in Kid Biz and donating his proceeds to the Grand Island Historical Society! Thompson Farms, 2487 Long Road helps collect pantry food for the Grand Island Neighbors Foundation. They are reaching out to the community as the pantry is in need of following items: Peanut butter, jelly, mac & cheese, pasta, rice (regular 1 pound bags or instant) canned beans including kidney, pinto, chili and baked beans. All shelf stable pantry items are still being accepted not just what is in demand. PLEASE be sure food is not expired. Items can be dropped off at the farm in the box near egg cooler!

Lions Club Diaper Drive will take place over a two-week period between April 3rd and April 16th, 2022. A number of locations will be sites for collecting all types of disposable diapers and baby wipes for dispersal throughout the FeedMore of WNY service area. The Grand Island sites are: Town Hall (lower entrance); Howard Hanna Realty; St. Stephens Catholic Church; Island Family Eye Care; Trinity United Methodist Church; Trilogy/MOG Physical Therapy.

Melinda Hitzges is a single mother to her three sons, Bryton, Ashton & Chase. The family lost everything in a house fire in Grand Island on Feb. 24, including their beloved pets. The whole stairway was engulfed in flames, the kitchen and half of the living room was destroyed. The family is now trying to pick up the pieces. A kayak launch is planned for Woods Creek in Buckhorn Park with a tentative date of late spring/early June.
Casella is in the process of painting over the PINTO name on all the recycle totes and will be putting new Casella stickers on them in the coming weeks. They have asked that people put their recycle totes out on their collection day even if they don’t need to be dumped so that they can paint them.

The Kenmore/Grand Island girls hockey team were defeated by Section III Skaneatles on Saturday, February 12th in Canton, NY at the NYS Public High School Athletic Assoc. semifinal, by a score of 4-1. Skaneateles went on to win the championship. Great season gals!
GIHS wrestler Brian Beilec remains undefeated after the Section VI Division 1 championships state qualifier last Saturday at Starpoint. He wrestles in the 172-pound weight class and after three wins Saturday, he is 43-0. He was named the tournaments most oustanding wrestler. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships are Feb. 25-26 in Albany.

Save the date for the Grand Island High School production of The Wizard of Oz. Performances will be in the Grand Viking Theater: Thursday, February 3 at 7 PM; Friday, February 4 at 7 PM; Saturday, February 5 at 6 PM.
The Western New York Land Conservancy has been awarded a $160,000 grant from the Tonawanda Community Environmental Benefit Program to undertake a number of improvements at nature preserves in North Tonawanda and Grand Island. The grant will be used to restore wildlife habitat, improve walking trails and involve youth and others in environmental education. The grant award decisions were made by the state Department of Environmental Conservation and the Attorney General's Office after the results of a public balloting process developed by the agencies in collaboration with a community advisory panel. Projects with the most support were selected for funding, with the funds awarded over a period of two years.
