Nancy was the daughter of the late Peter J and Ruth (Lockwood) Eberz, born in New York City on March 16, 1943, where her father was stationed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Nancy spent her childhood in Buffalo as the eldest of her siblings, all of whom survive her. A 1960 graduate of Mt. St. Joseph's Academy, she entered the convent of the Sister of St. Joseph of Buffalo, at age 17. Nancy earned her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Medaille College and a Master's Degree in Counseling from the University of Buffalo. She loved Buffalo and loved teaching for many years in the inner city for the Sisters of St. Joseph. When the Diocese of Buffalo closed the convent, Sister Nancy, who was a Superior at the time, answered a new calling as a public school teacher, beginning in Lackawanna. She ultimately retired in 1998 from the Grand Island Public Schools, where she had served as Crisis Counselor.
The founding mission in 1854, when the Sisters of St. Joseph came to the United States, was to operate Catholic Schools within local parishes and to establish education and service for what was termed at the time "deaf mute" children. With her religious background and education, combined with her natural caring, Nancy was drawn to helping children and families, serving through the Family Courts, where she provided crisis counseling for children and families, along with service to special needs children and their families.
Upon retirement, Nancy and her beloved friend, Gileen French, who also survives her, moved to their lakefront home on Lake Erie, where she savored the magnificent sunsets and the everchanging lake. Nancy also enjoyed many winters in Port Royale and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida with Gileen and a myriad of friends. Known for her gracious entertaining, the fresh flowers in abundance in their homes along with wide-ranging interests and friends, Nancy continued to serve the community as a member of the Salvation Army Board of Directors, the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation; and as a stalwart and vibrant supporter of St. Columban's on the Lake, especially through her work with the annual festival. She also remained fully engaged with the education focused sorority, The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa.

Mary Agnes Dunbar-Daluisio - died in her home October 4, 2017, surrounded by family and friends. Mary was born on June 23, 1954 and joyously lived her life on Grand Island. Mary was beloved for her compassionate involvement with the community. For many years, she chaired the Grand Island Relay for Life cancer fundraising event, making it the most successful event of its kind.
Mary was president of the altar society of Saint Stephen's church, where she taught religious educational classes and helped many fellow parishioners through difficult times with her love, faith, and kindness. After being diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer, Mary devoted herself to supporting research efforts and sharing her story. A courageous fighter, Mary gave others strength and hope in their battles. One of her favorite causes was the annual lawnmower race, which blossomed into a day-long celebration and competition, with the proceeds going to Relay for Life.
The Grand Island Chamber of Commerce named Mary "Citizen of the Year" in 2007 and 2015, in recognition of the time and energy she devoted to helping fellow Islanders. A life-long resident of Grand Island, Mary was known for her smile, wit, and style. Between Mary's expertise and personal attention to each customer, she made every visit to Fuccillo Automotive Group a memorable experience.
Mary's loving family included her husband, James (Jim), her daughter Erin, sisters Charity, Margaret and Cecilia, brother Robert, best friend Leslie, parents Elizabeth Marie (Betty), Ted and Billy, and grandmother Agnes. Mary had many nieces and nephews who loved their "Aunt Mimi." Mary enjoyed being a member of the Stack family, one of the founding families of Grand Island, where she grew up surrounded by the love of her relatives, especially her first cousins.
Friends may call Friday 4-8 PM at the Kaiser Funeral Home 1950 Whitehaven Road, Grand Island. A memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 AM at St. Stephen's Church (Old Church). In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Relay for Life Grand Island (www.relayforlife.org/grandislandNY). Mary encouraged us all to be more forgiving, caring, and to be better in everything we do (i.e. do it like she would). In Mary's words, "I love you."
Julie Ann Lockett - September 27, 2017, Biology Lecturer at Buffalo State College. Julie, of Grand Island, was born in Stoke-on-Trent, England, a descendant of pottery workers and coal miners. She never lost the distinctive accent of her birthplace. Her parents divorced when she was three and she was raised by her father and grandmother. She excelled at school and was particularly talented in science and art. After winning a scholarship to London University, she graduated with a bachelor's degree in Botany and Zoology. Subsequently, she taught biology in a wide range of schools in England, including inner-city schools, the top-ranked girl's school in Cambridge, an all-boys Jesuit grammar school where she was the only female member of staff, and head of biology at a junior college. She lived in the small village of Goostrey, Cheshire for 15 years, where she enjoyed growing gooseberries competitively and was elected to the village council.
After moving to the USA with her husband and children, after a short period in Texas, she settled in Grand Island where she lived for 35 years, cultivating a large English garden. Despite 10 years of teaching experience in England, she could only teach in New York State as a substitute, and so she enrolled at Buffalo State College for a Masters degree in education. Immediately after graduation, she was appointed as a Lecturer at Buffalo State, and for 15 years she was a very popular and inspirational teacher of biology to generations of students.
One of her passions was Scottish terrier dogs after she had her first Scottie at the age of five, and for many years she wrote a monthly newsletter giving health tips for other owners. She had many friends in the worldwide community of Scottie owners. She also loved to travel. As a student, she spent one summer hitchhiking throughout Europe and the next traveling all over the USA and Canada by Greyhound bus. After retirement, she traveled extensively including visits to Nepal, China, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, and, memorably for a biologist, she sailed around the Galapagos Islands in the Beagle sailboat. After being able to see so much of the world, she always said that her favorite place was her home on Grand Island with her family, garden and Scottie dogs.
She was diagnosed with cancer of the duodenum 15 months before she died in Hospice Buffalo at the age of 74. She is survived by her husband Michael and children; James Lockett (Kathleen), Josephine Hegarty (Denis), and John Lockett (Michelle) together with grandchildren; Charles, Margaret and Catherine Hegarty, and Thomas, Connor, Kaleigh and Bridget Lockett. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, October 11 at 4 PM at Trinity United Methodist Church, 2100 Whitehaven Rd., Grand Island. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Buffalo. Celebrating the Life of Carleen Alt Gerber
On Saturday, May 13, join family and friends at the Alt Farm to remember and celebrate the life of Carleen Alt Gerber. Carleen was a joyful presence, a dear friend, and cherished by her family. We will come together to honor her and recognize how she touched our lives by sharing memories, smiles, laughter and love. The celebratory memorial service will be noon to 3:00pm at 2489 Whitehaven Road, Grand Island. Readings and remembrances starting at 1:00pm.
Carleen Alt Gerber - passed away on February 13, 2017 with her family beside her. Devoted sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, matriarch, friend, and one-time bicycle rodeo champion, Carleen inspired everyone she encountered with her free spirit, kindness, sense of humor, and positive attitude. Known to some as Carly and to others as Dolly, she lived her entire life on Grand Island. She helped her parents to run Alt Chevrolet, the general store that was once at the corner of Whitehaven Road and Alt Boulevard, and cared for the animals on the Alt farm.
Throughout life she continued this compassion toward her granddogs, and to all animals, and was a friend to the pigeons, squirrels, groundhogs, and other wildlife. Her tireless work ethic and love of family were evident in the way and the pride with which she raised two daughters - Nicole and Danielle - and her granddaughter Caitlin Conlon, and doted on her little sister Sandy. With an enthusiasm to try anything and to celebrate every moment, Carleen's life was full of adventures. It was also apparent that she enjoyed little pleasures and whimsy. Life to Carleen was about what she did, not what she had. It was about experiences and the people around her, and she cherished her friendships and her family. She was sunshine, and she enchanted and motivated with her genuine, thoughtful, and uplifting nature. We are better for having shared life with her.
A celebration of Carleen will be held on Mother's Day weekend at the Alt Farm on Whitehaven Road. Information will be posted on IsledeGrande.com in advance. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Another Chance for English Setters (ACES): www.englishsetterrescue.org.
