DONALD EDWARD “DON” SCHOPP
Niagara GazetteDonald E. “Don” Schopp, age 89, of the City of Tonawanda and
formerly of Grand Island, passed away October 14, 2009 at Niagara Hospice House
in Lockport. Born March 16, 1920, Don was the son of the late Charles Alexander,
Sr. and Isabelle (nee Fraser) Schopp, and was the husband of Lois Anne Schopp,
who died in 2004. Don grew up in Tonawanda and moved to Grand Island in 1953.
Dr. Schopp graduated from Tonawanda High School in 1938 and Ohio State
University’s School of Optometry. Don practiced Optometry as Donald E. Schopp
Optometrist for over 40 years, with offices in Tonawanda and Grand Island. He
also served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy during World War II. After his
retirement, Don and Lois moved to Bradenton, FL, returning to the Tonawanda area
after his wife’s death. He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church
in Tonawanda, a 37 year member of Buffalo Launch Club and a member of the
Masonic Lodge. As an Optometrist, he was involved with the Lions Club of
Tonawanda where he served as Past President. Don also enjoyed boating, fishing
and golf.
He is survived by two daughters, Linda (D. Stuart) MacLeod of Maryland and
Barbara (Charles) Bell of Snyder, NY; a son, Richard (Jill) Schopp of Grand
Island; five grandchildren and three step-children, Terry, Mark and Scott; and a
brother, Robert C. (Gwen) Schopp of Williamsville. He was the brother of the
late Charles (the late Evelina) Schopp, Jr.
There was no prior visitation. A private graveside service will be held in
Acacia Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Niagara Hospice,
4675 Sunset Dr., Lockport, NY 14094.
