2002 Fall Sports Review
The Girls' Soccer Team (13-1)(19-2-1), coached by Peter Prozik, won their third consecutive Niagara Frontier League(N.F.L.) Championship, fourth in the last six years, second consecutive Section VI Class A Championship and fourth overall. The Lady Vikings are the first Class A Team in five years to reach the State "final four." They were ranked #1 in Western New York and #4 in New York State.
The most successful program in the school's history, Football (7-1)(8-2) coached by Dean Santorio and assisted by Steve Steck and Mike Stauffer, earned their first (post Gene Masters) trip to Ralph Wilson Stadium. The Vikings are ranked #4 in W.N.Y. and #11 in N.Y.S.
The Girls' Swimming and Diving Team, coached by Mike Murray and assisted by Lee Herbst won the Frontier Division and finished second in the N.F.L. The Lady Vikings were led by diver Kelly Beatty, who placed third in New York State.
Boys' Soccer (10-3-1)(13-5-1), coached by Peter Kuehne, finished third in the N.F.L. and ranked #6 in W.N.Y. They continue to prove the Vikings are the #1 Girls' and Boys' Soccer Program in W.N.Y.
Boys' Volleyball (10-4)(10-5) coached by Dave Kelley, was the biggest success story of the year. The Vikings improved from last year's 4-10 record to a third place finish in the N.F.L., led by John Colosi, the Vikings' first ever All W.N.Y. All Star.
Girls' Cross Country (12-2) coached by Don Sauer, placed second in the N.F.L., third in Section VI and ranked 9th in W.N.Y.
Boys Cross Country (10-4) also coached by Don Sauer, placed third in N.F.L., sixth in Section VI and was led by Kevin Buzzelli. Kevin won the N.F.L.'s, finished fourth in Section VI and in his second consecutive trip to the states finished 29th.
Girls' Tennis (8-6)(11-7) coached by Athletic Director Jon Roth, finished the season with a record 11 wins.
The Golf Team (4-3)(6-4) coached by Craig Warthling, finished fourth in the N.F.L. earning their second consecutive winning season. Seniors Tom Rajczak and Matt Hagen earned a trip to the State Tournament, with Jeff Pickel as an alternate.
Girls' Gymnastics (3-4)(7-8) coached by Tami Lewis, assisted by Lindsey Andreini suffered its first losing season in years. Tami is very optimistic with her top six of seven gymnasts returning.
Girls' Volleyball (1-13)(3-16) coached by Daneen Gallagher is very optimistic about next years' team. A winning J.V. team and many veterans' returning should make for a much improved team.
In addition, three Viking Modified Sports were also very successful:
Modified Football (6-0) Coach Henry Carney and assistant coach Jim Randles were pleased with the team's performance.
Modified Girls' Volleyball (8-5) coach Nancy Keller and Modified Boys' Volleyball (4-3) coach Julie Roth also did well.
