Purple Martins at Beaver Island - July 2021

Photo provided by Mark Filipski, NYS DEC.

In 2019 the DEC and US Fish and Wildlife Service installed three purple martin gourd racks at Beaver Island State Park. Purple martins are the largest North American representative of the swallow family. Martin's nest communally (typically in man made structures in this day and age). Many Islanders are probably familiar with the more traditional housing structures generally associated with purple martins. Gourds, however, haven proven to be more appealing to purple martins while appealing less to non native cavity nest site competitors (starlings and house sparrows).
Mark Filipski of NYS DEC reports that all of the gourds are occupied and over 400 eggs have been laid this year. Two of the structures can be seen on Little Beaver Island (opposite marina). The third structure is near the bridge, which crosses lagoon, by sledding hill. Note the crescent shaped starling resistant entry holes and the purple martin decoy on the close up view. As a final step: Volunteers will be playing recordings of purple martin vocalizations to make these structures even more appealing. Many Thanks to these agencies and State Parks for their continued commitment to enhancing the natural environment here on our Island!!

Reg Schopp - July 2021

Reg Schopp Photo.

I was going to make a bank deposit at Tops a few weeks ago. I saw this enameled copper and bronze flowers rain guage, I grabbed it, the last one, without a price. The $10.99 was even better. I presented it when I got home and it immediately was placed in our garden, little did I know how much fun it would be. For a few weeks I have been checking it every morning. . . . July 6th 40mm morning 1.6” amazing, the next day July 8th another 60mm 2.3”, WOW, that has to be a record, in one day? We all know now that was nothing. Saturday, July 17th at 9PM after the deluge, the gauge read 171 mm from the last empty July 14th at 7AM. Either way, in three days if is more than 2” a day. Definitely the best $10.99 spent this year, thank you Tops.

Mary Stewart - April 2021

The forcast was 3-5", but it looked like more! On Wednesday, April 21st, there were two crashes at the North GI Bridge during rush hour. One, on the bridge, had the left lane closed for an hour. The second was below the bridge in the northbound lane. This combination had traffic backed up past Whitehaven Road.
