Jan Yardley Named Senior Citizen of the Year 2020 - June

Mary Stewart photo.

The Golden Age Center recently announced their 2020 Senior Citizen of the Year as Jan Yardley. Throughout the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, Jan worked tirelessly to make masks to help keep her community, friends and family safe. She made over 480 masks to donate to Kaegebein Elementary School to keep all the students and staff members safe during the pandemic.
Over 100 masks were given to the Catalician Center to keep their staff members safe as they worked in the community, providing services. Masks were also hung on the clothesline outside her house, so that people in the community could go and grab masks to stay healthy and safe. Jan kept making masks to give out to friends, family, to pass on to local groups, or to give to anyone who needed them. In the end, Jan has made between three and four thousand masks, made from her own hands, her own sewing machine, with her own materials and supplies, due to the goodness of her own heart, to help others.
Also, Jan has a Little Library outside her house, to further help those in need, enjoy the love of reading a new book. As many were isolated in their homes for many months due to the pandemic, Jan helped bring them much joy during this difficult time. Jan stocked her Little Library with many books and puzzles for all ages, for all to peruse, to stay engaged and having fun, while being cooped up at home. Jan exemplifies being a good neighbor, being a great leader, and is a remarkable choice for Senior of the Year 2020.
The Golden Age Center Senior Citizen of the Year will be an annual event. This award recognizes someone age 50 or older who has made a significant contribution to the Golden Age Center AND the Grand Island community through volunteerism, leadership, and service.

Spring Cook Out at GAC - March 2021

Mary Stewart photos & story.

Spring has finally arrived bringing us the weather we all have been waiting for. Members of the Golden Age Center recently welcomed spring with a "spring cookout," complete with dogs or burgers and macaroni salad, plus dessert. Since Covid 19 virus hit the center, proper guidelines, including how many they can allow to come into the center are followed. Those who order lunch have the option of eating at the center or picking up their lunch to enjoy at home.
