The Grand Island girls soccer team’s season opener came a little later than most, but it made it a good one.
Liz Lorence scored with eight seconds left in the second overtime to give the Vikings a 1-0 victory over Rochester power Mercy on Saturday afternoon.
Lorence headed in a corner kick by Jenna Raepple for the game-winner. Kristin Wegrzym made 16 saves in nearly 100 minutes of action to earn the shutout.
“It was a great start and a great first win against a quality Section V team,” said Grand Island coach Dave Bowman. “All the girls across the board worked hard for it. They stuck with the system and the good result came at the end — it’s very rewarding for the girls.”
