HS ROUNDUP (Oct. 23): Vikings win first boys volleyball title
Staff ReportsJonas Stalyga’s 18 kills and six blocks helped Grand Island down
Kenmore West, 3-2, as the Vikings captured the first Niagara Frontier League
boys volleyball title in school history on Tuesday.
The close, back-and-forth NFL win was marked by game scores of 23-25, 25-10,
25-27, 25-19, 25-8.
“You wouldn’t believe it but we were down almost 10 points in game four and
came all the way back,” GI coach Bill Schultz said. “I’m proud of these
guys. If I get them to play a little more consistent, I think we’ll be able to
roll past some people in sectionals.”
Also for GI (13-3 overall, 12-2 NFL), Scott Holler picked up 15 kills, four
blocks, 15 digs and six aces and Mike Karpie added 12 kills, six blocks and four
digs. For West (10-4), Nemanja Opacic had eight kills, 12 digs and seven blocks.
