Grand Island High School AP Statistics students earned a first and third place overall at the first annual UB Statistics competition, held in late May. The teams were judged based on poster design, use of statistical methods, clarity of the message and creativity of the project.
The team of Nicholas Carey and Natalie Turck took first place with "ICE ICE Baby", where they analyzed the number of illegal immigrants apprehended at the Southwest border and the cost of border security. "Team Alright" earned third place honors for William Soos, Christian Whetham, Brady Hofmeyer and Kassidy Taylor. That project examined the efforts their community is making with regrads to global warming. GIHS faculty member Natalie Gallagher was advisor to the teams.

Super Day and Starry Night - GIHS Senior Prom - June 2019

Grand Island High School promoted a safe and fun prom through day long activities this past Friday, May 31st. The day began with a presentation to the senior class by Officer Tom Franz, fellow classmates, and Mercy Flight. The message to the students was clear; to make good choices and stay safe during this busy prom/graduation season. The visit by Mercy Flight was an added bonus and the students observed their landing and questions were answered regarding their important role in live saving all over WNY.
Prom was then hosted at the Foundry on Elmwood and students danced the night away. After prom, it was back to the high school where teachers and parents hosted a post prom celebration with entertainment and prizes till the wee hours of the morning. These events were made possible by an immense amount of time and effort in raising funds to keep our students in a safe and responsible atmosphere.
Many thanks to advisors Eileen Briceland, Ameila Scinta, Mandy Myers and Cheryl Chamberlain (prom coordinators) and Melissa Kosmoski and Bob Simpson (post prom leaders). The PSTA, parents, support staff and local business are at the heart of post prom and did an awesome job. With less than a month till graduation, the senior class looks forward to their exciting future.

GI DECA Shines at State Conference - March 2019

The 59th DECA State Career Conference held March 6-8 in Rochester, NY, had a few extra special moments unlike no other for GI DECA:
1. The first ever New York DECA president elected from Grand Island, Gabriella Bergstrom.
2. A Life Achievement Award for advisor Cheryl Chamberlain.
3. A second place Lip Sync Battle Team of Jacob Corrao, Nick Carey, Joe Botticello, Mckenna Prochaska and Libby Koyn.
4. Seven students moving onto Nationals, including a first place win by Casey's Cabana owners Gabby Bergstrom, Luke Hess and Lauren Merletti.
5. Top Ten notoriety in the state for two of the three middle school teams as well as 15 other students!
6. Remarkable work using local businesses as examples in business plans by students. (Momma De's, Casey's Cabana, GI Neighbors Foundation, Tops, Social Status Marketing)
All of this could not have been possible without the continued support of the board of ed, administration, GISBA, and business department members (kudos to Mary Gentz and Chris Simpson for accompanying MaryJane Fonte and I on this trip), Amy Boutet and James Rustowicz. Parents should be also congratulated on the successes of their children. Once again, to those that worked hard and didn't win, we applaud their efforts against over 2000 students from all over NYS, it doesn't go unnoticed.

JV Boys Hockey Defends State Championship! - March 2019

Bob Kopf photo - click for larger view.

Story by Rob Ratajczak, Jr.     The Grand Island JV Club Hockey Team completed another successful season with a State Championship on March 3rd at Hyde Park Ice Pavilion, with a 4-3 win over Jamestown. The Vikings have won back-to-back State titles and three titles in four years.
The coaching staff, led by Head Coach Marvin Pawlowski, finished the regular season with a record of 13-3-1, won the league championship earning a spot in the State tournament, and a chance to defend last year’s State title.
The State Championship did not start as the team hoped. They dropped the opener 3-2 to Wilson/Newfane surrendering a 2-0 lead after 2 periods. Both GI goals were scored by regular season point leader Liam Snyder, with assist to Idrius Falletta and Conner Morrow. Losing the first game in a round robin qualifier is far from ideal. The coaches challenged the Vikings, calling for a statement game against Locust Valley/North Shore. The team responded with a 17-0 win, setting themselves up for a win and in situation against Churchville. Vikings goal scorers were Cam Davis and Snyder with 4 goals and 1 assist each, Cole Bartolotta 2 goals and 3 assists, Falletta with 2 goals and 2 assists, with Billy Wieberg 1 goal and 3 assists, Joey Genevose and Stephen Leone goal and assist each, Ryan Pinzel goal and 3 assists, and a goal by Chance Luthringer to round out the scoring. Jack Dlugokinski had 4 helpers, Thomas Dworak and Christina Kessler helped out with 2 assists each. The Vikings beat Churchville 4-1 on goals by Falletta (2), Wieberg and Bartolotta to qualify as the top seed for the playoff single elimination round on Sunday.
The semi-final matched Grand Island against Starpoint. After a scoreless first period, the Spartan stuck first, but that was all Evan Smith would allow. Grand Island, on goals by Wieberg, Pinzel, Falletta, Davis and Snyder lifted the Vikings to a 5-1 win and a spot in the final game against the Jamestown Red Raiders.
Grand Island and Jamestown met four times prior during the season, splitting 2 and 2. However, Jamestown got the best of Grand Island in the final at the Christmas Tournament, and the Vikings did not want to let this Championship get away. The teams fought hard, but Grand Island never trailed in the back and forth final winning 4-3 on goals by Snyder, Falletta, Jack Mankowski and Pinzel. An exciting finish to another successful season for the Grand Island JV program. Congratulation Vikings on back to back State Championships.

JV Boys Hockey Wins League Again! - February 2019

Bob Kopf photo - click for larger view.

Story by Rob Ratajczak, Jr.     The Grand Island JV Club Hockey Team is again heading to the State Tournament at Hyde Park Ice Pavilion March 1 -3, 2019. This marks the seventh consecutive trip to the tourney and the Vikings are the defending champs.
The coaching staff knew this year would be a challenge. After last year’s "dream season" and graduating many players to the Varsity team, the coaches were concerned about a drop off. The team however rose to the occasion. After a 13-3-1 regular season earning them a first round bye, they played rival Lewiston-Porter in the semi-final best of three series.
The Vikings prevailed in the opening game 5-2, on goals by Idrius Falleta (2), Jack Dlugokinski, Cole Bartolotta and Stephen Leone. They knew game two would be harder. Lew-Port took it to overtime, but the Vikings prevailed 5-4. Falleta, Bartolotta, Liam Snyder and the final two goals by Billy Weiberg, sent the Vikings to the Championship against East Aurora - Holland.
