Grand Island has a near lock on the Niagara Frontier League girls tennis championship after beating Niagara-Wheatfield 4-1 Wednesday, September 29th
GI improved to 11-0 and handed N-W just their second defeat, both to the Vikings.
By beating the only girls tennis team in the Niagara Frontier League who could catch them in the standings, the Vikings are virtually assured the championship. The three teams left on Grand Island's NFL schedule all lost to the Vikings in their first meeting 5-0 with GI winning14 of the 15 matches in straight sets. Nineteen of the 31 sets were won by GI 6-0.After Vikings Kiersten Brown (first singles) and the duo of Lily Koslowski and Claire LeFevre (second doubles) won their matches in straight sets, the Vikings needed one more point to clinch the N-W match, but the both second and third singles matches and the first doubles match went to three sets against the Falcons. Had N-W swept all three remaining matches to win, they would have vaulted into a first-place tie with Grand Island in the NFL standings and likely shared the NFL championship.
At about the same time N-W's Adyson Homsi beat GI's Megan Pinzel 6-0 in the third set for the Falcons' first point, GI's Riley Weber trailed N-W's Arianna Mohilewsky 5-2 in the third set and GI's first doubles team of Alicia Hunt and Mia Schiffmacher in a battle up 3-2 in the third set against N-W's Gabriela Stanley and Hannah Stewart.
Weber clinched the win, however, by fighting back to take five straight games and win the third set 7-5. Meanwhile, the first doubles match went to a third set tiebreaker tied 6-6. The Falcons duo of Stanley and Stewart held a 4-2 lead in the tiebreaker, but Hunt lobbed a winner crosscourt into the left corner for 4-all, and the Vikings pair then won three of the next four points to take the tiebreaker, 7-5.
Grand Island 4, Niagara-Wheatfield 1
First singles: Kiersten Brown (Grand Island) defeated Sydney March (Niagara-Wheatfield) 6-0, 6-1
Second singles: Riley Weber (Grand Island) defeated Arianna Mohilewsky (Niagara-Wheatfield) 6-4, 4-6, 7-5
Third singles: Adyson Homsi (Niagara-Wheatfield) defeated Megan Pinzel (Grand Island) 3-6, 6-2, 6-0
First doubles: Alicia Hunt and Mia Schiffmacher (Grand Island) defeated Gabriela Stanley and Hannah Stewart (Niagara-Wheatfield) 4-6, 6-4, 7-6
Second doubles: Lily Koslowski and Claire LeFevre (Grand Island) defeated Michaela Brooks and Ashley Licht (Niagara-Wheatfield) 6-1, 6-0

Niagara-Wheatfield beat Grand Island 3-2 in a battle of the two remaining unbeaten girls volleyball teams in the Niagara Frontier League.
The Falcons won 23-25, 25-11, 25-9, 23-25, 25-12 in the GIHS main gym to take over sole possession of first place in the league standings. In the first game, Grand Island was up as much as five (15-10), but four straight points by N-W put them up 22-20. Grand Island rallied to take a 23-22 lead and won the game 25-23 when Molly Leggett hit the back line for the final point. N-W won 50 of the next 70 points to go up 2-1. GI's Emma Santorio served out the fourth game for GI with two aces in the last five points for a 25-23 win. GI then led 6-1 in the fifth and deciding set, but the Falcons went on a 24-6 run for the win. N-W is now 6-0 in the NFL girls volleyball league. Grand Island drops to 5-1 in the league. They play again at N-W Oct. 14.

She was recognized for her dedication to the welfare of students. “Karen knows each struggling student and their unique challenges both academically and at home. She takes a whole-child approach to connect with her students and works with them to find success. This award is a fitting way for our PTSA to recognize her many years of service to the families of Grand Island."Lynn Ziehm, high school main-office secretary, has gone out of her way to assist the PTSA as well as the PTA Council Celebration of Inspiration program, year after year. She goes beyond what is asked of her by making sure PTA volunteers get the information they need and by helping them stay in contact with necessary high school personnel. Lynn helps make these special PTA programs a success. She cares about PTA events as much as any parent. Her efforts are well-deserving of a PTA Honorary Life Membership award.

Snapshot of the school board meeting where the students were honored by the GI School Board for their efforts.
Click photo for larger view.
The DECA theme "The Next Level" was truly what competition was all about this year for a virtual New York State Conference. In any other year, students would travel to Rochester, NY to compete in over 60 areas of business competition. This year, students logged onto a platform and then uploaded a video of their presentation to a judge. It was really different for the students, but GIDECA always is willing to learn and grow in the field of business. Overall, 21 students went to competition and the following students were awarded top ten medals in the state: Emily Cohen for Retail Merchandising, John Paul Szczublewski for Quick Serve Restaurant Management, and the team of Nathaniel Cohen and William Hofmeyer for Buying and Merchandising Team Decision Making. The team of Justin Horvath and Evan Walowitz earned 4th Place in Sports and Entertainment Team Decision Making and are eligible for competition at the National level next month. Advisor Cheryl Chamberlain would like to commend her DECA students for always giving their best and being amazing leaders in the school and community.GIHS Viking Values Students of the Month for February 2021

GIHS Academy of Finance Grows! - March 2021
Just last year, Amy Boutet and Cheryl Chamberlain were worried about building a National Academy at Grand Island High School during a pandemic. "We just didn't know if students would be receptive to a new business program during these trying times," Amy Boutet, Academy Director said. The worrying was over during a meet and greet on Google last week as over 40 eighth grade students tuned in for their official acceptance into the growing program. Boutet went on to say that the High School now boasts over 100 members of this cutting edge business academy. In addition, Boutet and Chamberlain will monitor the first paid internship program this summer for academy members who will graduate in next year's cohort. "It is an exciting time for sure and Grand Island businesses are ready and willing to take on our interns," Chamberlain added. The Grand Island Academy of Finance has a well rounded board of directors from the business community who will also serve as mentors to the academy students. This program is successful at other schools in the region, including Hamburg and Orchard Park. "Our academy provides the "school within a school" concept and students enjoy being a part of this highly regarded program," Boutet proudly summed up.
