The Buffalo Convention Center served as the venue for this year's DECA Region 12 Competition and Grand Island did not disappoint. Students were dressed for competitive business success and competed in events such as accounting, marketing and finance. Thirteen schools in WNY participated and judges from the business world were on hand to critique student presentations. Grand Island came away with fifteen winners and a first place in Automotive Marketing! Junior Preston Whitfield impressed local judge Alec Metro of Certified Auto Brokers, located on Grand Island with his business and marketing knowledge learned through our classes at GIHS.
Other winners were: Skye Dreher, Addison Flegal, Samantha Ennis, Alma Brown, Hannah Higuera, Cami Harding, Raven Khreis, Olivia Mayer, Hollyn Lynch, Meredith Ehlenfield, Casey Walowitz, Sophia Pyc and Abbigail Toth. Toth is a member of our JV DECA crew and competed previously in our Mini Regional competition to advance to this level. A total of just over 30 students will go onto the New York State DECA Career Conference in March where they will compete against students from all over the state. University at Buffalo Admissions Speaker at GIHS - October 2022

Pictured is Christina Caucci-Anderson from the Office of Admissions.

Teachers, Eileen Briceland and Cheryl Chamberlain were brainstorming during the summer about how to make an impact on rising seniors at Grand Island High School. Briceland suggested a guest speaker series and Chamberlain sought out her contacts. Christina Caucci-Anderson, Assistant Director of Campus Events and Programs at UB, provided an intimate discussion for approximately 30 seniors on what colleges look for in a candidate. From essays to extracurriculars, students were informed on college admission criteria and how to stand out. One of the points that stood out for students was the meaning of "grit," and that it helps in the process of selection. Students can look forward to the next speaker, a local entrepreneur and business owner coming in December.

Erie 1 BOCES' Grand Island Student Spotlight- March 2022

Caralyn Reynolds.

Caralyn Reynolds is a senior from Grand Island High School and is enrolled in the Health Careers program at Erie 1 BOCES Kenton Career and Technical Center. “I enrolled in BOCES because I spent a lot of time in and out of the hospital as a child and wanted to get an appropriate education in healthcare verse my firsthand experiences,” Caralyn said.     In the fall of 2022, following graduation, Caralyn plans on entering a Bachelor of Nursing in Science program at a four year college and then going on to obtain a Registered Nursing degree. She plans to seek employment as an oncology nurse after college.
“Caralyn demonstrates professionalism and teamwork at all times. She shows a passion for learning and plans to continue her career in healthcare working towards becoming a registered nurse,” said instructor Jonnie O’Connor.
“This program has provided me an advantage to reach my goals because I not only learn about the different body systems, abbreviations in the medical field, and different medication, but I get to learn different skills and apply them to real people and even get to go into a healthcare facility to get a taste of what it’s like to work as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant,” Carlayn said. She also added, “This has been one of my favorite classes that I’ve taken during high school and it has taught me so much to prepare me for my future in healthcare.”
As part of public education, Erie 1 BOCES offers a variety of career and technical programs during the regular school day to high school students in Erie County. High school students interested in learning more about how they can participate in various programs such as sports science, web and gaming technologies, nursing or aviation technology, should visit www.e1b.org/cte or speak with their high school counselor.
