The Grand Island High School girls basketball team won the Class A Far West Regional Championship on Saturday, the first in the schools history after four previous tries. For all of the GI athletic contests I have attended for the last three decades or so, this was as exciting as any, including some of our big football wins at the Stadium. At halftime, I was just hoping we could keep in close. It sounds like a backhanded compliment to some athletes but they (Pittsford Mendon) were, in my opinion, more athletic but our girls were a whole lot tougher and Jen Banker proved to be the superior coach with the adjustments she made at halftime. It helped, too, that our best player, Kallie Banker, mono and all, was/is a lot better than their best player. The other thing that was key in their 22-3 third quarter run, again in my opinion, was playing at ECC (as opposed to playing in Rochester) in front of a lot of Islanders. It was loud.
