Joel Klock recorded 13 strikeouts to help Grand Island to a 9-1 win over Lew-Port in its Niagara Frontier League baseball opener.
“He’s only a junior but he’s a three-year starter for us,” Grand Island coach Dean Santorio said. “He’s got great command of his fastball and he throws in the low-to mid-80s. His breaking ball is good, which sets him apart.”

Gazette Report
Grand Island’s Joel Klock out-dueled Kenmore East’s Scott Whitehead on Wednesday in a Niagara Frontier League game Vikings coach Dean Santorio called one for the ages.
“Probably the best two pitching performances I’ve ever seen,” Santorio said. “They both pitched their hearts out.”
Klock went all eight innings in the 1-0 win, tossing a no-hitter and striking out 18 batters.
Whitehead also went the distance, striking out 19 and allowing just three hits.
Marvin Pawlowski got two of those hits, including the game-winning solo home run to right with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. Pawlowski also had a double. Chris Podlucky had the other hit for GI (7-3 overall, 4-0 NFL). East fell to 0-4 in the league.
