Section VI Tournament
The Lockport tandem of Matt DiTullio and Andrew Smist won a pair of doubles matches to advance to today’s semifinals at the Section VI Championships at Lancaster High School. In round one the LHS duo beat Steve Gloss and Casey Billyard of Frewsburg, 6-0, 6-2. In the quarterfinals, they disposed of Jerome Luo and Raj Shah of Williamsville East, 6-2, 6-2.
In the semifinals, DiTullio and Smist will be matched up with Orchard Park’s Eric Johnson and Brian Matthews. Even if they lose the match, DiTullio and Smist will still have the opportunity to qualify for states by playing in the third-place match. The top three teams from Section VI become state qualifiers.
The Niagara Falls team of Matt Thompson and T.J. Bullock lost to Medina’s Ketan Mehta and Kevin Snyder, 6-7 (7-4), 7-5, 6-3 in the opening round, while Ryan Hulub and Mike Slawich of Niagara-Wheatfield fell to Johnson and Matthews of Orchard Park, 6-1, 6-0 and Wilson’s Kyle Bogdan and Jake Rohring lost to Southwestern’s Ed Fagan and Griffin Menzies, 0-6, 6-4, 6-3.
In singles action, Grand Island’s Mike Mucci topped Hutch-Tech’s Jerry Chamnichanh, 6-2, 6-3 in the first round before falling to Orchard Park’s Matt Miller, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). Niagara-Wheatfield’s Alex Buerger fell to Jose Marquinez of Amherst, 6-0, 6-2, John Lipa of Newfane lost to Southwestern’s Ted Mueller, 6-3, 6-1 and Barker’s Erick Bennes dropped a close match to Marcus Johnston of Fredonia, 7-5, 7-5.
