Grand Island - High School Tennis Preview
Mia Villani, Annie Corrao, Zaineb Khawat, Liana Buscaglia and Emelie-Jo Scheffler look to be mainstays in the Vikings' top seven this year following the loss of nine seniors from last season's 5-9 team, including four starters.
Returning to the line-up are captains Corrao (senior), and Buscaglia (junior), as well as first singles player Villani. New faces include Khawar, a senior, and Scheffler, a freshman.
"We're hoping to be 500 or better," coach Julie Neville said. "We've had a few years where we've been under that, and that'd be a step in the right direction."

Coming off two straight years of sectional semifinal losses, coach John Head’s Vikings look primed for another deep run.
With a strong core of seniors, led by 6-foot-1, first-team All-Western New York senior Al Brown, who has a verbal commitment to the University of Maryland, Head said expectations are high on the Island.
"The expectation is to compete for the league and section final," he said. "Both of (the semifinal) losses were on the road, so we’re really trying to play hard and get that advantage this year."
Head’s team features standouts all over the court, from captain Alex Griffin and fellow senior Cassie Oursler (6-foot-3) to eighth grader Lindsay Proctor, the team’s libero. "Cassie is a four-year starter and Alex is willing to do anything for us," Head said. "She’s moving to the outside, from left to right all the time, even though she’s never played there." "Linsay plays travel volleyball year round and just has a great touch with the ball and very natural form." The Viking roster features 10 seniors, three juniors and Proctor. Head said other standouts will include senior setter Melissa Gibson and Jess Bronschidle, who will likely be playing Division I hockey next season.
