River Lea
The Grand Island Historical Society restored and maintains the farm house
known as River Lea and located in Beaver Island State Park.
It was built on Lewis F. Allen's property, Allenton Farms,
by his son, W. Cleveland Allen. Today it is owned by New York State.

   Grand Island Historical Society members hosted two holiday luncheons, complete with fashion shows of vintage clothing. Longtime member Maggie Gushue, organizer of the show, shared a lot of Island history as she did the commentary for each model. Modeling were Suzanne Grafinger, Jennifer Long, Teddy Linenfelser, Audra Wynne, along with Elaine Nesbit and Sandy Kancar.
   Luncheon committee was headed up by Sharon Nichols, Carolyn Doebert and Mrs. Gushue.





Historical Society Members Only Holiday Party - Dec. 2011


   The Grand Island Historical Society will hold its members only Holiday Party on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at 7:00 pm at River Lea Farmhouse. Members are asked to bring an hors d'oeuvre to share. Desserts will be provided.

Holiday Event - Christmas Candlelight Tours - 2011


   The Grand Island Historical Society introduces a new event with the first of two candlelight tours being held on Sunday, December 4 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and again on Saturday, December 10 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Hot gingerbread will be served by docents. The donation is $3.00.
   One afternoon Open House with entertainment and refreshments will be held on Sunday, December 11, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. According to Co-Chairman Sharon Nichols, "Visitors are invited to shop in our Country Store for holiday goodies and homemade cookies."
   All holiday events are being held in the Lewis F. Allen Farmhouse, the Historical Society's headquarters in Beaver Island State Park.




Historical Society Meeting - November 2011

    The Grand Island Historical Society will hold its monthy meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, November 3, 2011 at the River Lea Historic Farmhouse located in Beaver Island State Park. The guest speaker will be Sandy Starks from Forest Lawn Cemetery giving a power point presentation on "The History of Forest Lawn and the Rural Cemetery Movement." All programs are free and open to the public and refreshments will be served. For more information or questions, contact Adele Upton at 773-5847.

    The Grand Island Historical Society will hold an open house featuring a special Elsie E. Stamler display on Sunday, October 16th from 2-4 p.m. at River Lea in Beaver Island State Park. Free to the public and refreshments will be served.

Holiday Events at River Lea - Fall 2011


    Members of the Grand Island Historical Society will open the Christmas Season with their annual members’ party at River Lea on Saturday, December 3 at 7 p.m. Members asked to bring an appetizer to share.
   Holiday luncheons will be held on Tuesday, December 6 and Friday, December 9 at 12 noon by reservation. Tickets at $20 are available by calling Carol Moore, 773-3817. The program for both luncheons will be “Maggie’s Favorite Fashions” presented by Maggie Gushue.
   A new event will be candlelight tours on Sunday, December 4 from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, December 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. Hot gingerbread will be served by docents. The donation is $3.00. The program will feature Pat Ensminger, a librarian at Roosevelt School in the Ken-Ton School District, who will portray the historical character, Mary Jemison. The public is cordially invited and refreshments will be served.

   The Grand Island Historical Society members held their annual root beer float fundraiser in the Marion Klingel Town Commons on Tuesday, July 19, 2011. The installation of officers took place in River Lea in Beaver Island State Park on Thursday, June 2, 2011.




Historical Society Offers Rootbeer Floats - July 2011

The Grand Island Historical Society will offer a rootbeer float fundraiser during the town sponsored band concert in Klingel Town Commons at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 19. The concert will feature the Dixieland music of the Bar Room Buzzards. Rain date is Thurs., July 21.


Historical Society Announces Huge Garage Sale - June 2011

The Grand Island Historical Society's Annual Yard Sale will be held Saturday, June 4 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1570 Cox Road in Ferry Village. Grand Island postcards, notecards and maps will be for sale. Contributions from many households, as well as a few antiques, make this the sale of the season!

Society members will be on hand in each of the rooms throughout the house to answer questions and offer information. Refreshments will be served.

Grand Island Historical Society Meeting - "History of Bricks, Brick Making"
   The Grand Island Historical Society will hold a general meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 5, 2011 in its headquarters River Lea, in Beaver Island State Park, Grand Island, NY. The program will feature Frank Clement, vice president of the Orchard Park Historical Society, who will present the history of bricks and brick making from as far back as the Roman Empire. The meeting is open to the public and refreshments will be served.
   Members of the Grand Island Historical Society will host an open house from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, May 15 at River Lea in Beaver Island State Park. The public is cordially invited and refreshments will be served.

Grand Island Historical Society Hosts Civil War Re-enactors - Feb. 2011

The Grand Island Historical Society will hold a general meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2011 in Historic Trinity Church, 2100 Whitehaven Road. The program will feature Civil War Re-enactors from the 151st NY based out of Newfane and the Newfane Historical Society who will come with full gear and equipment to explain what life was like as a Union Army soldier. This will be a hands on presentation with many items for people to look at and hold. The meeting is open to the public and refreshments will be served.
