Celebrating Thanksgiving - December 2015

Lee Cohen photos and story

Indians and Pilgrims in the classes of Mrs. Angelo and Mrs. Burczynski at Huth Road school came together peacefully to celebrate Thanksgiving. They were busy preparing applesauce, churned butter, making cornbread and popcorn and they also feasted on venison stew, dried fruits, and venison jerky. After eating the delicious food they played typical Indian and Pilgrim games, including spear the turkey, fox and goose, spear the stick, find the firestick, flip the stick, and an Indian counting game called pugasaing. Parent volunteers helped prepare the food and also assisted with the games. Celebrating Thanksgiving has been an annual tradition for more than 20 years in Mrs. Angelo's 5th grade classes and Mrs. Burczynski's second grade classes.

Chemistry Comes Alive at Huth - June 2015

Huth 5th graders were "wowed" during the "Chemistry Comes Alive" presentation presented by two Canisius College professors, Dr. Steven Szczepankiewicz and Dr. Phillip Sheridan, along with several of their chemistry students, on Wednesday, June 3rd. The presentation complemented the chemistry unit recently completed by 5th grade students. Throughout the hands-on demonstrations, students were asked to make predictions and observations. Four stations were set up and students, wearing safety goggles, rotated through them, making silly putty, learning about chemical reactions, working with soap bubbles, and observing the effects of liquid nitrogen. Lots of comments like "Wow," "Cool," and "I never knew chemistry could be so interesting," were heard throughout the presentation!

As part of enrichment activities at Huth Road Elementary, 5th graders were visited by Buffalo artist Manya Tubiniak in a program called the Essence of Chinese Art. She demonstrated the techniques of landscape painting and the use of Chinese brushes while sharing the philosophical concepts behind ancient Chinese art forms, including the significance of bamboo in Chinese paintings. She demonstrated how to use her brushes and how to do exercises for painting with ink. During classes, Huth Road art teacher Mrs. Dana Allen had introduced the fifth graders to bamboo painting and taught them how to hold and use the bamboo brushes. The program, under the auspices of Young Audiences of Western New York, was made possible by Huth Road PTA.

K-12 Artist of the Month for March - March 2015

Rebekah Thompson

Congratulations to Rebekah Thompson! She has been chosen as the "K-12 Artist of the Month" for the Grand Island Central School District for March. Rebekah is a fifth grader at Huth Road Elementary and is a member of the Art Club. Her logo design was chosen to be printed on this year's Art Club t-shirts. She is very creative and pays attention to detail and craftsmanship to make her drawings look realistic. She enjoys drawing plants and outdoor scenes. Rebekah comes from a very artistic and musical family and she has a lot of encouragement at home. When she gets older, she would like to have a career in the arts; perhaps she will be an art teacher. Keep up the great work Rebekah! We wish her continued success.

K-12 Artist of the Month - March 2015

Alessandra Smith

The Grand Island Art Department would like to congratulate Alessandra Smith as the recipient of the "K-12 Artist of the Month" for December of 2014. Alessandra is a fifth grader at Huth Road Elementary. She is a member of the Art Club and has enjoyed art since she was very young. She works very hard on her projects and has very neat craftsmanship. Alessandra enjoys drawing and painting pictures of horses. She likes to work in watercolor as her choice of medium and contributes her creativity to her grandmother. She helps her grandmother with card-making and scrapbooking. Best of luck to Alessandra in her future!
