Benefit to help man with brain injury

5/12/2005

A benefit will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday for James B. Roberts, 19, the Canisius College student from Grand Island who suffered a serious brain injury in a motor-vehicle accident in January.

The event will be held at St. Mark School, 399 Woodward Ave., where his mother, Nancy, has been a first-grade teacher for eight years. Proceeds will help defray the costs of his rehabilitation.

Critically injured Jan. 17 on Route 219 while on his way to skiing, Roberts was in a coma for about six weeks. He opened his eyes Feb. 3 and uttered his first words on Feb. 18, as he began emerging from the coma.

Roberts remains in intensive speech, physical and occupational therapy as an outpatient at Erie County Medical Center. He hopes to return to Canisius as a part-time student in the fall.

Anyone interested in donating may write a check to Nancy or Joseph Roberts and send it to Helen Beaman, c/o M&T Bank, 2381 Grand Island Blvd., Grand Island, 14072.
