Memorial Library Preschool & Toddler Events - Dec. 2011

   There will be a Winter Session of the Preschool Storyhour at the Grand Island Memorial Library featuring stories, songs and crafts for children 3 to 5 years old. Children must be 3 years old by January 23, 2012. The program will be held on Monday mornings, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. beginning on January 23 and on Tuesday afternoons from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. beginning on January 24.
Registration for either session begins on Tuesday, January 10 at 9:00 a.m.
   There will be a Winter Session of the Toddler Time Lapsit at the Grand Island Memorial Library featuring stories, songs and fingerplays for children 18 months to 3 years old. Each child must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. Children must be 18 months old by January 25, 2012. The program will be held on Wednesday mornings, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. beginning on January 25. Registration is required and begins on January 11 at 9:00 a.m.

Memorial Library Holiday Hours - Dec. 2011

   The Grand Island Memorial Library announces special holiday hours. The library will be closed on Saturday, December 24 and Monday, December 26 in observance of the Christmas holiday. The library will be open Saturday, December 31 from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm and closed on Monday, January 2 in observance of New Year’s Day.
   The library will be open that week as follows:

Second Tuesday Book Club Donates To Library - Dec. 2011

    Members of the Second Tuesday of the Month Book Club presented the Grand Island Memorial Library with a check on Thursday, December 8. This donation will be used to start a special collection of family and parenting books. The book club has adopted this project as their annual holiday donation and will continue this in future years.
   Any other book clubs and organizations who would like to join this effort can contact the library at 773-7124 for further details.


Library News - Graham Cracker Houses - Dec. 2011


   Over 70 graham cracker houses were made by families on December 3, 2011 at the Grand Island Memorial Library. The program was conducted by Explore and More, a children's museum, and funded by the Friends of the library.

    The Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library held a booksale on November 18 and 19. It was extremely well attended. Many booklovers found great deals on a number of donated books, especially during the $2.00 a bag sale held on Saturday afternoon.

    Make your own Graham Cracker House will be presented by Explore & More at the Grand Island Memorial Library on Saturday, December 3, 2011. There will be two sessions: 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Space is limited and registration is required. When registering please specify which time you prefer. Grand Island Memorial Library benefits from Legislator Hardwick's donation - Oct. 2011

   (Erie County, NY) The Grand Island Memorial Library received a $500 donation from Legislator Kevin Hardwick, R-Grand Island, on Tuesday, October 18, 2011, which will be used to purchase materials or support programming.
    The donation was presented to Friends of Grand Island Memorial Library President Mary Cooke. Also attending the presentation were Library Director Lynn Alan-Konovitz and Library Board of Trustees President Richard Earne.
    "The Grand Island Memorial Library is extremely busy and I am pleased to support its efforts to continue serving the residents with quality materials and excellent programming," Legislator Hardwick said.
    "This was a very wonderful and generous donation," Director Alan-Konovitz said following the presentation.
    Legislator Hardwick continues to support community organizations by donating a portion of his salary. Since taking office he has pledged to donate a percentage of his salary as a way to give back while he continues to fight for the reduction of the Legislators' salaries.

Families gathered at the Grand Island Memorial Library on Thursday, October 6 to "Read for the Record" and enjoyed crafts, refreshments and the book Llama Llama Red Pajama.

On Tuesday, October 11 parents and children from the preschool storyhour were visited by the Grand Island Fire Company and heard a presentation on fire safety.

   Grand Island patron Meghan Dollard won a prize from the Buffalo and Erie County library system for her book reviews. The contest was held throughout the summer and encouraged adults to read and post their book reviews online.

Friends Of Library Annual Meeting - May 2011

   Over 30 people attended The Friends of Grand Island Memorial Library annual meeting on May 19 in the meeting room at the library, 1715 Bedell Road.
   An amendment to the Constitution was approved making some officer terms one year in length for 2011-2012 to provide staggered terms for the five officers.
   Elections were held with the following results:

Recording Secretary Grace Kammerer
Board Members Jill Banaszak, Kim Cich and Rosalie Palamuso
Elected to 1 year terms:
Vice-President Nancy Vizzi
Corresponding Secretary Marilynne Smith, Treasurer Barbara Jarzab
   Former Friends Board Member John Pax won the drawing for a $35 gift card to Barnes and Noble. Guy and Pat Rizzuto presented "Everything you'd like to know before you buy an E-reader" and everyone enjoyed refreshments.


Friends Of Library Meeting - May 2011

LEARN ABOUT E-BOOKS WITH THE FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY
   The annual meeting of the Friends of the Grand Island Library will be held Thursday, May 19, at 7:00 p.m., at the Library. The meeting will feature a presentation by Pat and Guy Rizzuto on "Using E-Books". Pat, a Library Trustee, and Guy, are great E-Book advocates, and will explain the use and convenience of the different brands, how to down-load books, which kinds can access Library offerings, and anything else you want to know about this new technology. Library service is changing; this is an opportunity to learn about the newest thing. The meeting is open to the public, and refreshments will be served.
   Preceding the program, there will be a short business meeting, with election of officers, and a vote on a proposed amendment to the Friends Constitution to allow for staggered terms for the officers. The amendment provides that at this meeting, the President and Recording Secretary be elected to two-year terms, and the Vice-President, Corresponding Secretary and Treasurer be elected to one-year terms. In 2012, the Vice-President, Corresponding Secretary and Treasurer shall be elected to to two-year terms. Thereafter, all officers shall be elected to two-year terms. Exact wording of the amendment is posted in the Library.



National Library Week - April 2011


    In celebration of National Library Week the Grand Island Memorial Library held a drawing for Barnes and Noble gift cards and library bags. Among the winners were Broady and Luke Winarski shown in the photograph receiving their gift card at the library. The contest was sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

   A Bedtime Story Hour was held at the Grand Island Memorial Library on Thursday, April 14 and had a number of families present for stories and crafts. The children are shown working on their craft. Professor Klutzo and friends entertained during the family program held on Saturday, April 16.


Friends of Library Meeting - April 2011

   The Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library will meet 7 p.m. Thursday, April 21 in the Community Room of Grand Island Memorial Library, 1715 Bedell Road, Grand Island. The recent used book sale will be discussed, and the friends are hoping some new members might come and find out how they can help our library. Some of the tasks involved are sorting the donated books for sales, and keeping the book cart in the main library stocked with sale books. Members are urged to attending monthly meetings that are held from September to May. If you love books, use the library, and can spare a small amount of time, this is a great opportunity to help with something the whole community benefits from.

   The Grand Island Memorial Library will be closed on Friday, April 22, 2011 in observance of Good Friday. The library will be open on Saturday, April 23 from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. The library is closed on Sunday.


Library Celebrates National Library Week - March 2011

   In celebration of National Library Week, two programs are planned. Bedtime Stories will be held on April 14 at 6:30 pm for ages 5 and under with an adult. Registration is required. A Family Program on Saturday, April 16 at 2:30 pm will feature Professor Klutzo, juggling, magic and more. Children under age 6 must be accompanied by an adult. No registration is required.

Friends of Library Used Book Sale - April 2011

   A used book sale will be held on Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9 in the Community Room of the Grand Island Memorial Library, 1715 Bedell Road, Grand Island, NY. This sale is sponsored by the Friends of the Grand Island Library, and will provide you with a great opportunity to spring clean your book shelves and donate some of your books for the sale. Then you can visit the sale and purchase some "new to you" books for your spring and summer reading.
    All of the items have been donated, and the proceeds will be used for books and equipment for the library, and for the many wonderful children's programs that are held throughout the year.
    A bid table containing special items is included in the sale with bids closing at 12:00 noon. Winning bidders must pick up their items within thirty days.
   The sale starts on Friday, April 8 for Friends of Grand Island Memorial Library, members only from 5 - 8 p.m. Individual memberships are $3 and life memberships are $35, Family memberships are $5, with life memberships $50. All memberships are available at the door.
   On Saturday, April 9, the sale runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with free admission. You may fill a bag with books for $2 from 1 - 3 p.m. If you need any further information, contact the library, 773-7124.
   Also, if you'd like to help with the sale or become a member of the Friends, please leave your name and phone number at the main desk of the library. Donations may be dropped off any time during regular library hours. This is a great way to help the library and to re-circulate books you've already read.


Monkeying Around The Library - Feb. 2011


Over 130 children and adults enjoyed a program presented by Carmen Presti and six of his monkeys from the Primate Sanctuary in Niagara Falls, NY on Wednesday, February 23. The program was funded by the Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library.
