Leonard F. Nassoiy Exhibit - May 2017
The Grand Island Memorial Library has been exhibiting artworks of Leonard F. Nassoiy from May 13 thru the end of June. Mr. Nassoiy was born in Niagara Falls, NY in 1908 and resided there before moving to Grand Island in 1949 where he lived until his passing in 1991. He was a self-taught architectural draftsman and painter, and also studied under George Palmer in the 70’s.
Many of his paintings are of familiar places on the Island: Buckhorn State Park, the old Ferry Village, barns and other buildings and establishments over the years. He belonged to the Grand Island Art Society, the Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society, had two solo shows and won several awards over the years.
Mr. Nassoiy was very active in St. Stephen's Parish and enjoyed doing sketches for the St. Stephen's neighbor days and elementary school's fun fair. He did many paintings of the cataracts of Niagara Falls. Excelling in watercolors and oils of both landscapes and waterscapes, he also had a penchant for capturing mysterious pensive moods of many of his models. He seemed to have a knack for bringing out their inner beauty. This man of strong faith and gentle manner also found a way to honor the deep compassion of Christ using charcoal and other media.
