Quilts & the Underground Railroad - November 2019

    Theresa Wiater, experienced quilter and retired teacher, Clarence Center Elementary School. For years, it has been believed that women and men used quilts as signals to help men, women and children escape slavery using the Underground Railroad. What were those signals? What did they mean? Is there truth to the signals or is it a fallacy that has been repeated for generations? Learn what the quilt blocks were, what they signified and the story that goes along with it. Grand Island Memorial Library Remodeling News - October 2019

    There are a lot of exciting remodeling projects coming up in November including new carpeting, a new circulation desk, and an interior lighting upgrade project. The main floor of the library will be closed to the public from Monday, November 4th to Saturday, November 9th and closed for Veterans Day on Monday, November 11th.
   There will be minimal services offered in the meeting room and the library’s vestibule during this week including: circulation (check in and check out), reference services, requested hold pick up, regular programming in the meeting room, a public computer workstation (minus printing), and book drop returns.
    The BECPL Bookmobile will be on site in the parking lot on the following days: Monday, November 4th from 9am-3pm, Friday, November 8th from 9am-2pm, Saturday, November 9th from 9am-3pm. As we move forward with plans, more information will be shared. If you have any questions, please call 773-7124 and ask for the library director.

    Local Author Visit: Michael L. Hawley - "Jack the Ripper and the Whitechapel Murders"
    Michael Hawley will lead a discussion of his books surrounding Rochester resident, Dr. Francis Tumblety, a key suspect in the 1888 Whitechapel murders, famously known as the Jack the Ripper murders. New evidence has been discovered, showcased in Michael L. Hawley's latest two books, The Ripper's Haunts and Jack the Ripper Suspect Dr. Francis Tumblety. He will also be discussing even newer evidence: a subject of his new book. A book signing will follow the presentation. No registration is required.

    Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library will hold their Annual Meeting including elections on Thursday, May 9th at 6 pm at the Library. The following slate of officers and board members is proposed: President - Mary Cooke, Recording Secretary – Trisha Birtz, Board Members – Marie Volpe, Russ Person, (open). A proposal to amend the By-Laws to indicate that 3 unexcused absences from board meetings will be considered resignation will be voted on. A proposal to increase the annual dues from $3 per year to $5 per year will be considered. The short business meeting will be followed by a presentation at 6:30 by local author, Lissa Marie, Redmon, author of The Murder Book. Refreshments will be provided and all are invited to attend.

Introduction to Balloon Sculpture with Gravitational Bull - April 2019

   Ages 8 and up, though younger are welcome with an adult. This is a fun and imaginative introduction to the art of balloon structure. Inflating, tying, managing the air within the balloon, lock twists, fold twists, and other techniques are all demonstrated.     Best of the Hubble Telescope. This program is designed for ages 8 and up. Family-friendly, adults are encouraged to attend.
    Take a fantastic tour of your universe as seen through the eyes of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). With some of the finest pictures ever released from this orbiting observatory, see new planet pictures, awesome new stars still shrouded in gas, and even dying stars. Peer at galaxies in deep space, and see these star cities colliding into each other. All seen through the eyes of the Hubble Space Telescope. Seasonal constellations are shown during the second part of the planetarium visit.

    Presenter: Roseanne Higgins, author, adjunct professor of Anthropology, SUNY Buffalo
    Actual records from the Erie County Poorhouse and hospital ledgers for patients with an insanity diagnosis, the history of the asylum, and how it evolved, as New York State laws changed, will be discussed. Roseanna is also the author of the 'Orphans and Inmates' historical fiction series of books set in Buffalo during the 19th century. The discussion is based on the research done for this book series.    Make Your Own Apple Cider Vinegar with Tina Ames. Apple Cider Vinegar is something you can use every day in your home. The health benefits are amazing! (Hula) Hoop Making Party - February 2019

    Wednesday, February 20th, 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM,
    This program will begin by explaining the secret to finding the perfect size for a beginner hoop. Next, Benjamin will demonstrate how to build and connect hoops, followed by members choosing their colors, tapes, and materials to decorate their hoop. All supplies provided.
    Benjamin will break down the fundamentals of waist hooping and a couple of off-body techniques for program participants. Everyone will leave with all of the tools they need to enjoy their new hoop for fitness, expression, and play! Limited to 20 participants. Registration required.    An Introduction to tracing your family's roots with Ancestry Library Edition (ALE), a database available at any Buffalo & Erie County Public Library location. Similar to the popular Ancestry.com website, this database contains collections of vital and original records, including those relating to birth, marriage, death, military service, and immigration.
