A beautifu Memorial Service
was held at Hamilton Park
United Church of Christ last
Saturday (April 21). Jodi
Loose, the organist at
Christ Church, Annville
started things off with a
medly of 'spirituals' as
only she can play them --
especiall requested by
Marilyn. The Prelude and
Postlude was played by Amy
and Ian on their guitars.
Pastor Dave Bushnell led the
service that included three
numbers by the Christ Church
Choir led by Kevin Biddle
(the choir's participation
was another request made by
Marilyn). Our good friend,
the Rev. Russ Mitman brought
us a message of hope
entitled, 'Marilyn's Song'
based on John 14:8a-3.
Marilyn's song was one she
sang to Ian when he had
major surgery at eight
months of age . . . the
words included, 'Jesus
Christ, the living hope.
Glory. Hallelujah!' I have
several copies of this
sermon if anyone is
interested in reading it.
Kurt Mitman, played a
beautiful rendition of
'Amazing Grace' on a
authentic Native American
flute (a great addition to
the service). We ended this
uplifting memorial tribute
to Marilyn by singing one of
her requested hymns, 'Can
the Circle Be Unbroken' with
guitar and fiddle music. We
all got into 'Can the Circle
. . . as Marilyn would have
by clapping and toe-tapping
to the beat! It was a
glorious time -- a fitting
tribute to one who loved to
worship her God. (Note:
Marilyn planned the entire
service.)
Following our service, we
all met in the Fellowship
Hall of the church for
refreshments and good
fellowship. Our family is
extremely grateful for the
many who attended the
service and gave us their
support.
There is a 'memorial' to
Marilyn if anyone wishes to
contribute. Since Marilyn
loved to worship and led and
planned so many services, it
is only fitting that the
'memorial' include some form
of worship activity. So, we
decided that a contribution
to the Worship Team of
Hamilton Park UCC would be
fitting. If you wish to
contribute, send your
contribution to: Hamilton
Park UCC, 1210 Maple Avenue,
Lancaster, Pa 17603. Mark
your donation 'Marilyn
Serfass Memorial.'
Again I want to thank all of
you for the wonderful
support you gave to me and
my family during Marilyn's
illness and death. It will
not be forgotten . . . it
was what held us together
through it all.
Love,
Dave
