The lovely Lady Vikings of Connor Middle School Modified Softball posted a very solid 12 and 2 season record that put them in a tie for first place in their league. The girls faced some stiff competition as usual and it is with some sadness that the league will not look as it has for the past 18 or so years because of budget difficulties in neighboring districts. Valiant opponents such as Niagara Wheatfield and Kenmore Middle, Hoover, and Franklin of the Ken-Ton School District will no longer be with us. They have all been wonderful rivalries that helped improve skills in both camps. We will miss them, wish them well, and look forward to their return in the future. The squad had only three seventh graders on it due to some very strong competition in the grade level ahead of it. There were two pitchers and a catcher in this group, which bodes well for next season. Kaylee Richard pitched very well in her appearances and ended up with an OB% of over .500. Madelyn Konopczynski is an outstanding catcher with a strong arm and a strong softball mind. Madelyn batted .462 with an OB% of over .600. Also in this mix is Assistant Captain Rachael Madigan. Rachael pitched well, played the field well, and had an OB% of .500. This is a very solid nucleus with which to begin next year’s campaign.
The Vikings were laden with eighth graders this season – seven returners and five newbies. The five first-timers were a big help across the board. Jenna Corrao was a strong voice in the dugout and had an OB% (on-base percentage) of over .500. Haley Melisz swung a steady bat and also had an OB% of over .500. Cammie Colan played a strong, knowledgeable third base and had an excellent batter’s eye as she led the team in walks with 14. Cassie Shickluna and Julia Pino provided the squad with some serious punch at the plate. Cassie was third on the team in RBIs (runs batted in) and extra-base hits. Julia was quite a power pack as she threatened for the team’s Triple Crown by batting .500, being second in RBIs with 16 and tied for first with eight extra-base hits (including our only homerun – a monster at NT). The girls also played the field very well at first base and in centerfield, respectively.
The seven eighth grade returning players proved to be solid veterans, four of which were pitchers who obviously spent a great deal of time improving their skills in the off-season. Emily Augugliaro might not have thrown a wild pitch all season in facing 100 batters. Her accuracy was exceedingly commendable. Emily posted a beautiful 2.60 ERA (earned run average) and also found some comfort hitting from the right side of the plate. Taylor Cecere was an outstanding first baseman, but the play of the season was in the bottom of the last inning of regulation in the last game when she started a double play at third by stepping on the base for the force and firing to first to keep the game-winning run from scoring. We went on to win in extra innings – that does not happen without that heads up play. Taylor also led the team with 18 RBI, 5 doubles, and 3 triples. Rebecca Hennessy was strong as a pitcher, earning three wins as a hurler, but her shining moment was doubling in what would prove to be the winning runs in the game mentioned previously as prolonged by Taylor. A memorable end to her two years on modified. Melanie Sweeney did her job at the plate, but her true calling was in the circle – Melanie came into this season and quickly became the Ace of the Staff. Melanie posted five wins in five starts and had a very low 2.10 ERA against some quality opponents. We look forward to some quality starts from her in the high school. Also in this group were co-MVPs Bridget Federico and Sabrina Giordano. Bridget led the team in runs scored and stolen bases with an OB% of over .500. She played with a rare passion this season and is not afraid to get dirty. Her efforts behind the plate and at shortstop were 100% on every pitch. As catcher, she picked off six base runners who wandered off their base unsuspectingly. Sabrina is a very strong middle infielder who did whatever was asked of her with a smile and a full effort. At the end of the season, the stats had to be rechecked because of an assumed error, but there was no error – Sabrina was 24 for 34 at the plate, an astounding .706 batting average from a very tough official scorer. That is the highest BA in GI Modified Softball’s 18-season history. It is quite an accomplishment and a testimony to Sabrina as an individual that she would never toot her own horn – she let her actions speak for her. And finally, we come to our Captain, Sarah Bellinger. Sarah had solid batting numbers, was the only player not to have struck out this year, and was a strong middle infielder as well. Her demeanor and leadership were evident by looking in the dugout and on the field. Her quiet leadership made the players welcome and comfortable but also made them aware of the team’s high expectations for the season ahead.
The girls were a pleasure to work with this year. We should expect great things from those moving on to the high school program. Thanks have to go to the parents who continuously put the time into the off-season just as the players did. It paid off and will continue to do so. As to our opponents who will not be with us next season, we remember you fondly and look forward to your speedy return. Congratulations, 2012 lovely Lady Vikings.

GHIS and VCMS ~ Spring Interview Day - May 2012
Picture: Alyssa Pino and sister Julia Pino...Even though they didn't interview with each other, sisters Alyssa and Julia demonstrate proper hand shake technique at Spring Interview Day!
Students from Mary Jane Fonte's Family and Consumer Science Classes had their first job interview courtesy of Cheryl Chamberlain's Business and DECA Students during Spring Interview Day at Veronica Connor Middle School. This unique program has been ongoing each year in the winter and spring and is a scaled down version of the High School Job Search Seminar. High school students act as interviewers and the middle school students prepare for an authentic experience complete with proper attire and a resume. Fonte and Chamberlain agree that interview experience at an early age enables students to become more confident and help with other areas of communication as they move onto the high school and future job market. For more information on DECA, a marketing and business club, contact Chamberlain at 773-8820.

Art Department Honors Artistic Achievers:
VCMS Artist was February “Artist of the Month” - March 2012
Mikayla Rosati is pictured here with her recently completed acrylic painting which is currently on display at The Grand Island Memorial Library during the month of March.
The Art Department of the Grand Island Central School District is pleased to continue its tradition of honoring exemplary student achievement. Initiated during the 2007-2008 school year, the K-12 “Student of the Month” award is designed to highlight the merits and achievements of ten student artists yearly, spotlighting one talented student each month. Honorees are selected for their unique artistic voices and visions as well as having used their creative capacities to enrich and improve their school environment and communities.
Students featured during the school year spotlight individuals from each of the district’s five schools. As artistic success reflects cumulative achievement and sequential development by student artists, and the accomplishments of children of all age levels is equally recognized by the awarding of this honor.
The student selected for February 2012 is Veronica Connor Middle School eighth grader Mikayla Rosati. Mikayla is an accelerated art student who says that spending time in her Studio In Art class is one of her favorite things to do. Mikayla says that her class, classmates and teacher inspire her daily to do her very best work. While she has always enjoyed and appreciated art, this student first became seriously interested two years ago. Mikayla is confident that art will always be a significant and important part of her life; and quite possibly a future career.
Mikayla’s art teacher, Ms. Nora Klein, cites her meticulous attention to detail, can-do attitude and ability to thoroughly work through visual problems as a few of the reasons why she was selected to receive this honor. Mikayla is a creative and hard-working young lady who displays her unique artistic point-of-view and intelligence in every one of her creations.
The Art Department of the Grand Island schools recognizes her unique artistic voice and potential and is pleased to honor Mikayla’s achievements by naming her the February “Artist of the Month”.
VCMS Art Display Celebrates “Youth In Art Month” - Feb 2012
Seventh grade students Julia Koprevich and Kelsey Mahoney create abstract paintings translating musical harmonies visually.
Finished painting by Kelsey Mahoney. Both girls’ work currently on display.
In celebration of March as “Youth In Art Month,” Veronica E. Connor Middle School proudly announces an art display at the Grand Island Memorial Library featuring the works of seventh and eighth grade students. The show, part of a collaboration between the Friends of the Library and the art department of the Grand Island schools, is designed to hi-light both cognition and creation. A wide variety of student work including pieces completed in graphite, pastel, collage, paint and ceramic media; can be viewed during regular library hours throughout the month of March.Youth In Art Month is an annual observance which began in 1961 as a collaborative effort between the Art and Craft Materials Institute, the National Art Education Association and the Council for Art Education in order to emphasize and make known the value of art education for all students and to support quality art programs within the nation’s schools. Among its many goals, this annual observance seeks to direct attention to the value of art education as an important component of the total student experience and educational curricula within schools. Recognizing that art education fosters understanding which helps develop citizens of a global society, Youth In Art Month seeks to make communities aware of the divergent and critical thinking skills inherent in art-based learning.
Artworks on display represent a small portion of the learning taking place by students during their art classes within the middle school. Cognitive, expressive and creative problem-solving skills are evident within the student work. Artworks that make interdisciplinary connections, engage students in visual problem solving and incorporate higher order thinking skills can be seen throughout the display and visually demonstrate the various ways in which middle-level learners meet the New York State Standards for the Visual Arts in their classes.
The community is cordially invited to view the “Youth In Art Month” show, as well as a second display featuring the work of sixth and seventh grade students to follow during the month of April.
