Posts Another Successful Campaign!
The girls came out of the blocks on fire this 2024-25 basketball season, winning their first seven games. They ended the campaign with a respectable 10-4 record that offers hope for JV and varsity squads in the future. The ladies had a signture win in Lockport on the high school floor and four one-basket wins which showed their composure and resiliency.
The team was composed mostly of 7th graders (10 of 14 players). Brynn Rowley was injured for much of the year, but came to practice and games dutifully to show her support and team spirit. Gianna Fusco was another player with great team spirit who also worked very hard in both practices and games. Haley Tracy and Emily Waddington were both full of life and smiles throughout the season. They both worked very hard at their craft to show constant improvement. Their defense towards the end of the season was very tight. Speaking of defense, Kacey Ulrich was a cheap suit in a rainstorm. Kacey's work in our signature win at Lockport was incredible. She stepped up and shut down a very dominating player that had size and strength over her, but not as much heart apparently.
Kelsie Squire picked up where her sister Ella left off ~ a solid two-way player with dribbling and shooting skills. Kelsie loves the behind the back dribble, if you ever happen to have to cover her. Raeven Yaksich, Mod Squad's sixth grade scorekeeper last year, was a solid post player now that she is old enough to get on the hardwood ~ grabbing defensive rebounds and putting back offensive rebounds.
To round out the seventh grade players this year were the big three: Morgan Gallagher, Kendell Petersen, and Assistant Captain Gemma Murgia. These three accounted for almost 60% of our total team scoring. They were very important and critical to the team's success as they were certainly good, but also helped to make others better. Gallagher had a monster game in the Lockport contest mentioned earlier, putting up 17 against a powerful squad. Her vision on defense was unparalleled. Petersen was the MVP and led the team in scoring on the season with 95 points. Kendell was five points short of becoming a Viking Centurion (only 17 in 31 years of GI girls modified basketball!) and dropped in four threes for the season. Assistant Captain Gemma Murgia was an excellent defender and a lead-by-example kind of player. She is a hard-nosed player who was always in the play: Gemma led the team in fouls given and fouls received.
From eighth grade we had only four players, three of which were on the squad last year. Newcomer Persephone Basiliko was a hard working player who used her time wisely in practice. As the season wore on, she became much more comfortable with the dance that is the game of basketball. Mehak Arora and Grace Fistola were with us last year and truly put in some work in the off-season to improve their respective games. Mehak became a solid defender who worked very hard on the court. Her anticipation of the play showed her improved familiarity with the game. Grace Fistola put in 63 points on the season ~ a huge improvement over last year and a testimony to the hard, lonely work one has to put in to improve. Kudos to her and her work ethic. Grace was rewarded for it with playing time and the satisfaction that comes with helping your team out. And finally, Captain Sarah Burke. Sarah missed half the season due to injury and/or illness, but was an important player when able to suit up. She was a leading force in the attitude and focus of the squad and this ability to not become disconnected is to her credit. Sarah will be important in high school with the basketball teams.
Finally, many thanks to our scorekeeper extraordinaire, Cooper Tracy (yes, relation). Cooper worked tirelessly learning his craft and towards the end of the season was bookkeeping like a pro. He was well-liked and respected by all of the adult scorekeepers throughout the league. As always, thanks too to our many loyal fans and families. You certainly made the effort worth while for the players who are truly thankful even though they may not always say so.
