Niagara River Greenway
Logo Design Competition
Prospectus
On September 21, 2005 New York State Governor George Pataki signed legislation creating the Niagara River Greenway Commission. The purpose of the Commission is to develop a plan for a linear system of parks and conservation areas that will redefine the Niagara River in terms of its history, economic vitality and ecological significance. Key elements of this plan will include increased public access to the Niagara River, development of a trail system with complimentary connections to land access points, balanced economic growth that compliments the natural and scenic environment, preservation and enhancement of environmental resources and the celebration of the region’s cultural and industrial heritage.
The ability to connect all the values that comprise the Niagara River Greenway plan is fundamental to the success of this project. Art has always been an effective means of connecting society with nature and history. Perhaps the first evidence of this connectivity began with the sketches of Niagara Falls prepared by Father Louis Hennepin in 1678. His work has been followed by many others including prominent artists of the Hudson River School. The Niagara River Greenway Commission believes that art and public space go together.
The legislation establishing the Niagara River Greenway includes the requirement to establish a logo. This logo may appear in print and digital format on all greenway products including letterheads, web-sites, signs, monuments, documents or other work products. The intent of the logo is to establish a trademark that the public can recognize and identify with.
The Niagara River Greenway Commission is proposing the creation of its logo by uniting with the arts community to develop an icon that truly represents both the goals of the commission and the desires of the public supporting those goals. Under this concept local artisans would be asked to participate in a design competition. The intent of this competition is to focus on the importance of the arts and their connection to the economic, cultural and environmental attributes of the Niagara River corridor. In essence, it would again bring art to the banks of the Niagara River. At the end of this competition the members of the Niagara River Greenway Commission would select the logo that best embraces all of the attributes of the anticipated greenway plan. The winner of this competition would earn long standing recognition for this work of art.
In summary, the logo competition will focus attention on the Niagara River corridor and the Niagara River Greenway Plan. The logo will mark the beginning of public pride and ownership of the Niagara River Greenway.
