Truck House Dedication - 1978

The Grand Island Fire Company's new truck house at Baseline near Fix Road was dedicated in 1978. Shown left are Fire Chief Gary Roesch (receiving the truck house key), and Board members Cy Diebold and Norm Mrkall. Shown between Gary and Cy are Herb Kranzmann and Jim Linenfelser.

Del & Herb's - 1980s

This photo of Del & Herb's restaurant was probably taken around 1988. The Haller family ran the place far longer than any of the other owners. It was originally built as Maccabee Hall and opened around 1890 by the Maccabee Life Insurance Policy Holders. The building belonged to members of the Maccabees, the Fraternal & Benevolent Policy Holders in the Maccabees Life Insurance of America, a farmers' alliance of insurance that was started on Grand Island at that time. Its original location was on Baseline Road, midway between Love and Staley roads. When that area was claimed for the proposed New York Central switching yards in the 1920s, the building was moved closer to Love Road. According to an old-timer who remembers the second move, Maccabee Hall was moved to the corner in the 1930s when Clem Scheuerman took it over and eventually opened it as a restaurant in 1936. The longtime favorite eating place had a total of four owners over the years, including Siegried "Ziggy" Gromm ("Ziggy's"), Del and Herb Haller ("Del & Herb's Grand Island Grille"), and successful real estate broker Ilona Lang ("Cathy & Jim's Del & Herb's"). "Dick & Jenny's Bake & Brew," opened in February 2008 in the former Maccabee Hall, and is a dream come true for Island residents, Dick and Jenny Benz. For a more complete story about the building, see Feature Story

Click photo for larger view

October 1990 - Island Dispatch story
According to an Island Dispatch story: "A replica of a farm house, barn and chicken coop, part of a West River Road farm in the 1800s, was the latest addition to historical items that are part of a permanent collection in River Lea in Beaver Island State.
The miniatures were the gift of Mr. and Mrs. John Pax, parents of Jim Pax, town councilman at the time. The display was built by Jim's grandfather, Henry Pax, around the turn of the century. Also presented to the Historical Society by the Pax family was a 100-year-old 16-gauge double barrel shotgun.
The little house, as well as its accompanying miniature farm facilities, is board-and-batten in design. It was modeled after a home on the farm purchased by John Pax in 1892. Moved to the 2800 block of Fix Road when the West River Parkway was being constructed in 1950, it has been remodeled almost beyond recognition.
The Grand Island Historical Society Christmas open house 2010 will be held on Sunday, November 28 and Sunday, December 5 from 1-4 p.m. at River Lea in Beaver Island State Park. The Society's headquarters, Lewis F. Allen's 1873 farm house, is all decorated for Christmas and a country store will be featured and refreshments will be served. There is no charge.

Click photo for larger view

This photo was taken by Barbi Lare in November 1984 when Linda Harbison's kindergarten students at Huth Road School were studying Pilgrims and Indians at the first Thanksgiving. Mrs. Harbison brought in a 15-foot teepee she and her family made about 10 years before when her son was in Cub Scouts. The structure was muslin, a substitute for the animal skins Indians used. The youngsters, who were able to spend some time inside the tent, made their own Pilgrim hats and collars, and Indian headdresses and vests. Email to teddy@giecom.net if you recognize anyone.
