GI Recreation Department Courts Open - July 2017

Top: Tennis, middle: Pickleball, bottom: Street/Roller Hockey.

Havenwood courts are now open! The facility includes two pickeball courts, one tennis court and a street / roller hockey court. Each court has a surface specifically designed for the sport. The roller hockey surface is a harder material designed to handle the use of hockey sticks and roller blades. The tennis and pickleball surface is a softer material designed for more traction and bounce of the tennis balls and pickleballs. Sticks and blades are allowed only on the hockey court.
Kaegebein courts are in the process of being resurfaced. They are scheduled to be open in late July. Due to the deteriorated condition of the courts, they had to be completely redone. The surface had to be milled up and new black top laid down. The black top surface has to cure for 30 days before the court surface can be put down. Once it is finished it will have two tennis courts and one tennis court will also be lined for pickleball. There is no street or roller hockey allowed at this facility - please use the Havenwood hockey court.
Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America. If you are unfamiliar with the sport or wish to learn more, check out the USA Pickleball Association website at www.usapa.org.A ribbon cutting ceremony for both facilities is planned for late July, keep an eye out for the date and time. More information on the facilities, recreation programs and contact info can be found at www.ginyrec.com or by calling the Recreation Department at 773-9680.
Help keep our courts in good condition - only tennis, pickleball and roller hockey on the surfaces designed for each sport. Please, no dogs, bikes or any other unauthorized activity.

Participants will have the opportunity to work on art of all different types - painting, drawing, sewing, photography, sculpture, potter etc. The studio will also host workshops, guest speakers, art shows, art socials and more. A variety of art supplies are available for participants of all artistic abilities. Recreation Department staff will supervise the studio and be available to guide and mentor participants. Staff includes current art teachers from the high school and college art students.
This new program was made possible through a collaborative effort between the Grand Island Recreation Department and the Grand Island Central School District Art Club. The Art Club and its members, under the direction of teacher Cindy Wynne, have been hard at work over the last few months to get the studio ready. They have acquired tables, cabinets, desks and stools donated from the school district as well as furniture and art supplies through various donors. The Recreation Department has purchased basic supplies to help participants get started including easels, paint, paper and rulers.
Art studio hours will be Friday evenings from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. and Saturday afternoons from 12:00-5:00 p.m. Additional days will be announced at a later date.
