District OKs new policy on release of student photos

Updated: 08/26/08 6:56 AM

Parents of Grand Island students will now have a single form to opt out of having their childrens’ pictures released publicly, under a new policy approved Monday by the School Board.

Before the change, pictures taken of sports teams, for yearbook pages and at public events required district employees to individually contact parents for permission to use the photos. Under the new policy, parents will be given a single form at the beginning of the school year that they can return to keep their child’s picture from being used publicly.

Superintendent Robert Christmann said the “vast majority” of parents released their children’s images for photographs and that the new policy would eliminate a time-consuming task for district workers.

The form and a newsletter explaining the policy are expected to be delivered to district parents early next week, around the beginning of classes.
