LOCAL RUNNING: Carter, Schmitt win LaBarbera 5K
By Staff ReportNORTH TONAWANDA — On an ideal day for a 5K, Grand
Island’s Chris Carter was the overall male top finisher while Katie Schmitt
was top female runner Saturday at the 13th annual Jamie LaBarbera Memorial 5K
Run for Education.
Carter completed the 3.1 mile course in 15 minutes, 42 seconds. “He was
flying. He was burning up the course,” said race director Russ Trippe. Schmitt
finished in 19:49.
In all, 265 runners from across the region, including Southern Ontario,
Rochester and Lake View, finished the course, which started and ended on the
grounds of St. Jude the Apostle Church in North Tonawanda. The race coincided
with North Tonawanda Catholic School’s annual three-day carnival and featured
a post-race party.
The nearly 300 finishers was comparable to the turnout in years past, race
according to Trippe. “This is among the two or three best that we’ve had. It
is one of the best races of the year in terms of quality and bargain and a good
running course,” he said. “Word is going to continue to spread and build for
this race.”
