Erie County Sheriff investigators say a deputy shot and killed a man on Grand
Island Wednesday night after the man refused to drop his weapon.
Authorities say deputies, responding to a 911 call about a possible suicide,
saw a man chasing a woman with a gun. The man open fired on the woman, hitting
her at least once. At that time, the man was ordered by deputies to drop his
gun. When he did not, deputies shot the suspect several times.
This whole incident occured in a yard near the intersection of Crescent Road
and Broadway on the south end of Grand Island.
Investigators say the woman, who was taken to ECMC, is expected to live.
While deputies performed CPR in an attempt to revive the suspect, a pipe bomb
was found in a backpack that the man was carrying. The Erie County bomb squad
was called in to remove the device early Thursday morning. During that time a
few residences in the area were evacuated.
Around daybreak, investigators and the bomb squad searched the residence of
the suspect on Buffalo Avenue in Niagara Falls. It is not clear what they took
from that apartment.
The initial investigation by the Erie County Sheriff's Department shows that
the deputy was justified in killing the suspect before he could do further
harm.
