Five injured in crash at Isle intersection

Updated: 05/23/08 6:52 AM

A two-car crash Thursday afternoon on Grand Island sent five people — including a 1-year-old boy — to area hospitals, Erie County sheriff’s officials said.

At 3:37 p. m., Kristy Swanson, 19, of Lockport was eastbound on Fix Road when she failed to stop at a stop sign at Baseline Road. She told investigators that she had turned around to give her baby a bottle and didn’t see the intersection.

A car traveling northbound then crashed into Swanson’s car. The northbound car rolled over and came to rest off the roadway, officials said.

Swanson, who suffered internal injuries, was flown by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center. Her passenger, Jason Mathias, 19, of Pendleton, had a fractured hip and was transported to ECMC as well. Both were listed in fair condition.

The baby, who had been strapped into a car seat, had some bumps and bruises and was taken to Women and Children’s Hospital for evaluation, authorities said.

The driver of the northbound car, Allison Englert, 20, of Grand Island, and her passenger, Stephanie Ohol, 20, of Lockport were taken to Kenmore Mercy Hospital. Englert suffered a neck injury and Ohol had a shoulder injury. Both were listed in good condition.

The crash was under investigation late Thursday.
