Sanitation worker on Grand Island suffers head injury

Updated: 08/12/08 10:25 AM

A sanitation worker on Grand Island suffered a head injury this morning when he struck his head against a garbage truck, Erie County sheriff's officials said.

The accident occurred at about 9:30 a.m. on Baseline Road, when the worker apparently was in the path of an oncoming vehicle.

"They're not sure whether the car struck him or he was jumping out of the way of the car and hit his head on the garbage truck," Sheriff's Patrol Chief Dennis Rankin said.

The worker was taken by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center.

Today's accident was the second serious accident involving a sanitation worker in the Northtowns in the last two months.

A BFI Waste Management truck driver was killed June 25, when he became pinned between his truck and a dumpster he was collecting from a Clarence Center coffee house.
