VFW Hosts Pearl Harbor Day Ceremony - December 2017

VFW Honor Guard.

   The VFW Post 9429 hosted a Pearl Harbor Day Ceremony on Thursday, December 7th at noon. "In memory of the men and women who perished during the attack on Pearl Harbor and the United States territories". VFW Commander Dan McMahon welcomed the attendees and Supervisor Nathan McMurray spoke of the attack that occurred 76 years ago. More than 2400 Americans were killed that day and over 1000 injured.




Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day Ceremony - November 2017

    The Charles N. DeGlopper VFW Post 9249 will host a Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day ceremony on Thursday, December 7th, 12:00 Noon, at the Post home, 2121 Grand Island Blvd. This is the 76th anniversary of the attack by Japanese fighter planes that killed more than 2,400 Americans. Military, Civic Organizations and the public are invited to attend this memorial service.

    At the Wednesday, November 29th American Legion meeting, certificates of appreciation were presented to Dispatch editor Larry Austin and Isledegrande editor Jodi Robinson. They were "recognized for outstanding support of Grand Island American Legion Post 1246 and VFW Post 9249".




Hot Turkey Sandwich Sale - November 2017

    The VFW Auxiliary, 2121 Grand Island Blvd. is having a hot turkey sandwich sale on Friday, November 17th from 4:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. (or sold out). Dinner is $7 and includes open faced hot turkey sandwich with gravy, chips, vegetable and cranberry sauce. Desserts available. 50/50 and lottery tree raffles.




Roast Pork Dinner - October 2017

    The VFW Auxiliary, 2121 Grand Island Blvd. is hosting a Pork Roast Dinner on Sunday, October 15th, from 4pm-7pm or sold out. Early Bird $8.50 (4-4:30 p.m.), or $9 per plate. Dinner includes Roast Pork with stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, sauerkraut and applesauce. Take out available at $9.50, no early birds. Dessert table, 50/50 and lottery money tree.




9/11 Memorial Ceremony - September 2017

    The VFW at 2121 Grand Island Blvd will be hosting a 9/11 Memorial Ceremony on Monday, September 11th at 7PM. It will take place at the flagpole, or under the pavilion in the event of rain. All are welcome to attend.




VFW Grand Island Garage Sale 2017 - July 2017

   The VFW Post 9249 in conjunction with Grand Island Farms, Inc. will be hosting a Garage Sale and Farmers Market on Friday, August 18th (12pm-6pm) & Saturday, August 19th (8am-4pm). 30 booths will be available, first come, first serve. Wall of Honor 42 Years Strong - July 2017

    The Grand Island VFW Post #9249, 2121 Grand Island Blvd., was mustered on August 6, 1965. Since its inception, a VFW Wall of Honor has been maintained. The wall consists of plaques with all deceased members names engraved on metal. At this time there are 226 names listed. A new plaque was added 15 years ago which lists the members that have served on the Honor Guard. In the middle of the wall is the Charles N. DeGlopper Medal of Honor Display.
   Over 15 years ago, Reg Schopp at the Island DeSignet Jewelry shop took over the engraving of the metal plaques at no charge, and continues to do so. Chaplain Mike Cutini said the post is constantly and aggressively seeking new members. All eligible are welcome, please bring their DD214 form in to the post.




Volunteer Opportunity - Help the Veterans - June 2017

   Please join us Monday, June 27th at 6:00 p.m. at the VFW Post, 2121 Grand Island Blvd., for a planning meeting for 4th of July at the VFW on Grand Island. We are reformatting the management of the event and welcome the public to the mandatory planning meeting to find out how you can help our event be successful. We will feed you light dinner and help you find the best venue to work. The day of the event we will feed you and offer refreshments. It's a lot of fun and helps a good cause.




Memorial Day Cemetery Schedule - May 2017


    The Honor Guard of the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial Post 9249 Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct gravesite services at the following locations on May 29, 2017 - times approximate:
  • Whitehaven Cemetery - East River Rd. (near Holiday Inn) 7:40-7:50 a.m.
  • Maple Grove Cemetery - (resting place of C. N. DeGlopper) near Whitehaven Rd. 7:55-8:05 a.m.
  • Staley Cemetery - West River Rd near Staley - 8:15-8:25 a.m.:
  • Assumption Cemetery - Whitehaven Rd, near 4th St. - 8:30-8:40 a.m.
  • Trinity Cemetery - Whitehaven Rd. next to Old Trinity Church 8:45-8:55 a.m.
  • St. Stephen's Cemetery - Baseline Rd, next to Old St. Stephen's Church - 9-9:10 a.m.




    VFW Flags on the Boulevard 2017 Sponsors - May 2017


       For several years the VFW Post #9249 has collected donations from individuals and businesses for the Flags on the Boulevard. Each Memorial Day, the flags are displayed with the sponsors names. One half of the proceeds will go to the DeGlopper Park expansion.

    VFW Cinco De Mayo Party - May 2017

        VFW Post #9249 is hosting a Cinco De Mayo Party on Friday, May 5th, at the Post, 2121 Grand Island Blvd. All members and public are welcome to attend. Festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. There will be a fiesta menu and margarita, tequilla and Mexican beer available. See flyer.




    VFW Chiavetta's Chicken BBQ - April 2017

        VFW Post #9249 is hosting a Chiavetta's Chicken BBQ as a fundraiser on Wednesday, May 3, 17 and 31. Take-out or dine-in, 4:00 p.m. - gone.     VFW Auxiliary Fish Dinner - March 2017

       The VFW Post 9249 is hosting a Lenten Fish Dinner on Friday, March 31st from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and April 14th from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the post, 2121 Grand Island Blvd. Dinner includes fish, French fries, cole slaw, macaroni salad, bread, butter, and coffee.     VFW Auxiliary Corned Beef & Cabbage Dinner - March 2017

       The 14th Annual VFW Auxiliary Corned Beef & Cabbage Dinner will be held on Saturday, March 18th from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the post, 2121 Grand Island Blvd. Dinner includes corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, carrots and dessert. The cost is $10, early birds 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., $9. 50/50 and lottery tree raffles. Public welcome.



    VFW Auxiliary Spaghetti Dinner - January 2017

        The VFW Auxiliary Annual Spaghetti Dinner will be on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at the Post, 2121 Grand Island Blvd. All you can eat spaghetti with meatballs, salad, bread & butter, coffee or tea. Desserts available for purchase. Cost is $7, Early Bird (4pm-5pm) $6. There will be a raffle and 50/50 split.




    VFW Auxiliary Annual Soup Night - January 2017

       The VFW Post 9249 Auxiliary 13th Annual Soup Night is Saturday, January 21st from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., or sold out. All you can eat soup, salad and bread is $7.00. Lot's of soups to choose from. Dessert table available. Take out available after 6:00 p.m., $6 per quart. Raffle, lottery tree, everyone welcome.
