Former Grand Island, NY resident, Maclyn Russell Turley, 93, was born in Blue Earth, MN on Sept. 11, 1916, the eldest child of Roland and Helen Manther Turley. His earliest roots in America can be traced back to the Puritans who left England in the Great Migration of the 1620's. By the 1800's, his ancestors were living in Connecticut, Virginia, Tennessee, and Mississippi. After the War Between the States, his family traveled up the Mississippi River to settle first in Minnesota and then Illinois. Mr. Turley came to Buffalo from Chicago as a construction supervisor in the building of the historic Cargill Grain Elevators on Buffalo's waterfront. He put down roots in the Queen City, studied architecture at UB, and worked under the tutelage of the late Duane Lyman before becoming a Registered Architect and founding his own firm. Two of his former partners, Robert Stievater and Al Mauri both continued to practice architecture in Buffalo and Watertown, NY. For many years, Turley, Stievater, Walker and Mauri was the consultant architectural firm for Marine Midland Bank, predecessor of HSBC and designed branch banks throughout the State of New York. In later years, he opened offices in Rockland County, NY, and designed for the Bank of New York (now Chase). He was honored at a reception held in Congers, NY celebrating his 50 years as a practicing architect. He was a teacher as well as a life-long learner. He believed in mentoring, and taught architectural and drafting students at the high school level in the evenings. He learned how to fly single-engine aircraft and in his 70's he studied CAD drafting to hone his professional skills. While living in Buffalo, he was active in the original Buffalo Athletic Club and Wanakah Country Club, where he was an avid golfer. This interest continued throughout his life. Until his mid-80's, he would play the entire course at Rockland Country Club without using a cart. He won several awards for his golf scores in local tournaments. He was an invited official at a Westchester Open tournament. In March, 1941 he married Lillian A. Kline in Central Presbyterian Church. They had two children, Marcia Anne, and Robert Russell Turley (Rev. Deborah), both of whom survive, as do grandsons, Robert R. Jr. and Peter Mathew Turley.
