Gerald F. Hawley, a retired General Motors worker who made his mark in boat racing, died of cancer Thursday in his Grand Island home. He was 64.
Born in Niagara Falls, Mr. Hawley was a longtime Grand Island resident and graduated from Trott Vocational High School in Niagara Falls.
After high school, Mr. Hawley served in the Vietnam War as a crew chief in the Air Force.
In 1970, he started working at the GM’s Powertrain Plant, where he was a heavy-engine repairman. He retired in 2001.
Mr. Hawley started racing boats when he was 14 and competed for some 20 years in the U. S. Powerboat Association. In the mid-1980s, he won a nation-al championship, as well as the North American championship at Valleyfield, Quebec.
He was a member of the Niagara Frontier Boat Racing Association, Grand Island Moose Lodge and Grand Island Rod and Gun Club. He also served as president of the Anchor Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Kimberly L. Mankowski and Kristin L. Internicola; two sisters, Donna L. Rodriguez and Linda L. Kaczor; and a brother, James L.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a. m. today in St. Stephen Catholic Church, 2100 Baseline Road, Grand Island.

Mary (Barron) Matthews of Stony Point Road in Grand Island, NY, passed away Sunday, September 12, 2010 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester with her family by her side.
Mary Jane Barron was born in Buffalo, NY on January 24th, 1944 to Charles Richard (Dick) Barron and Jane Elizabeth (Eggleston) Barron. She was the 2nd of 5 children. She grew up in Friendship, NY where she was active in 4H, Girl Scouts and student council. Mary was an exchange student in Panama, first runner up in her regional Miss America pageant, and a member of the National Honor Society. She graduated from high school in Friendship in 1962. In 1966, she graduated 7th in her class at Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science degree in both education and child development. She was a member of the Tri Delta Sorority.
In 1962, she met Jan David Matthews, then a midshipman at the US Naval Academy, at a youth fellowship Christmas party at Painted Post United Methodist church. They married in 1966 at that same church. Mary reared four children, all born within a 5 1/2 year span. Every day, Mary enriched her children's lives by taking them places and creating memorable experiences for them. As a family, they lived in North Kingstown, Rhode Island; Tecumseh, Michigan; Westminster, Maryland; Grand Island, New York; and Huntington Beach, California.
Mary was an avid Genealogist, Sewing Expert, and Collector of Hummels, Antiques, Dolls and other collectables. She was highly intelligent and could answer just about any question about any subject. In addition to writing the curriculum at several colleges where she taught, she was a substitute teacher and a home schooling educator for the Grand Island, NY school district. She also taught computers to children with Computer Tots during her time in California. Jan and Mary also lived together in New Fairfield, Connecticut where she spent much time researching family history to pass on to future generations.
Her greatest achievement was as a mother for her children and as a grandmother for her seven beloved grandchildren. She had a unique gift for interacting with children of all ages. She created special activities that were both fun and educational. She wrote and sung children's songs, poems and stories that touched the hearts of all the children and the adults in her life. She always made time for individual attention for each of her children and grandchildren. She will forever be remembered and endeared as "Precious Grandma."
She is survived by her husband Jan; her four children: daughters Suzanne Marie (Keith Hill) Matthews of Big Flats, NY and Nancy Lee (Russell) Blondin of Minneapolis, MN and sons Jeffery David (Tamie) Matthews of Grand Island and Michael Gregory (Patricia) Matthews of Cypress, TX; sister Sally Barron (Andrew) Dutcher of Painted Post; her seven grandchildren: Britny Anne Matthews, Christopher James (CJ) Matthews, David Jeffrey Matthews, Alexander Richard Matthews, Mitchell Keith Matthews Hill, Summer Jane Blondin and Skye Elizabeth Blondin; and several nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her parents, her brothers John Charles and Robert Richard Barron and her sister Nancy Lee Barron.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, September 18th from 1-3 pm with funeral services at 3 pm at Phillips Funeral Home, 17 W. Pultney Street in Corning, NY. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Friendship, NY on Monday, September 20th at 11am.
Memorials may be made in Mary's name to your local Salvation Army.

Susan, born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, was a music teacher in the N. Tonawanda School District for 20 years before retiring in 2003. Susan was a Holocaust survivor from Theresienstadt and a original cast member of the performance "Brundabar:" Richard, born in Dexter N.Y., was a veteran of the Korean War and a math teacher in the Niagara Falls School District and an avid scuba diver. Richard is survived by brother Brad, sister Beverly and predeceased by brother Robert. Richard and Susan had four children, two predeceased Janet Morris, husband Jerry and Paul J. Barter; survived by Denise Styliades, husband Harry and Jacqueline Richard, husband Bob, along with five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Donna E. McQuade
Donna E. McQuade's determined spirit entered this world in Hamilton, Ontario on November 3, 1942. On August 27, 2010 Donna left this earth and her loved ones behind and returned to the Lord's warm embrace. The eldest child of Truman and Mamie Grotz, she lived her early years on the banks of the Niagara River in Grand Island, NY, making cherished friends and nurturing her younger siblings. On June 15, 1968, Donna married her true love and best friend, Donald J. McQuade at Saint Steven's Catholic Church. Since 1986, she resided with her family in Destin, FL. A loving wife and mother, a doting grandmother and a friend to anyone with an open heart; she will be sorely missed and fondly remembered. Donna was preceded into Heaven by her parents, brother Rick, niece Meaghan, and nephews Rick and Rob. She carries on in the memory of her husband Don; their sons: Kyle, Corey, Sean and Ryan; daughter-in-law Amanda; brothers Randy and Tim and sister Elizabeth. She received immense joy from her three grandchildren: Elizabeth, Milo and Natalie, and touched the lives of countless family and friends who were fortunate in sharing their lives with her.
