Fond childhood-memories include: "Long's Food Store" on W. River Rd., Mac and Nora Mesmer's Summer Fruit/Veg. stand on Staley (where, as a kid, I would "stuff my face" w/ Concord grapes in Mr. Mesmer's small vineyard when he wasn't looking...), Staley Rd. Little League, hockey on the pond, Anne Kruse's cookies, talkin' with the old Fleischmann brothers as they tended their cows, "St. Stephen's," fishin', "Beaver Island," and all the other old GI institutions that "old-timers" know so well. My grandmother, Katherine (Mesmer) Moran and her 3 sisters and brother were born and grew up on the Island, as did my Dad, John...and his 2 brothers. They all had loads of old GI pictures... and stories for each picture...so the Island was always a familiar and warm place for me. It should have been...because it seemed like I was related to nearly everyone on it. The Ehde's, Mesmer's, Fleischmann's, Stack's seemed to make up a good 1/3 of the place. So I always felt a "part" of the GI family and it's history. But related or not, my wonderful friends and neighbors made it the best possible place to grow up.Those relationships are the reasons why I'll never be too far from....."the Island." It really is a unique place."

My Dad, Henry (Hank) Alt had a hardware store in the small plaza near Kaegebein School. Sorry I can't be more specific as to address but I do know we lived at 72 Redway Rd. and Greenway Rd. near Sandy Beach. It was terrific to live near my Great Aunt Evelyn (Oggie) and Uncle Earl Rankin who lived on the corner of our street, my Great Aunt Eleanor and Uncle Dusty who lived on the river front and my Great Uncle Andy's fish fry's on Friday's in his restaurant. All in all a great place for me and my five sisters to spend our childhood years. I'd love to hear from anyone who knows/knew me or my family - I truly miss GI and everyone I knew. Thanks to all, past and present, who make GI such a wonderful place!"

In 1838 or so George Huling homesteaded there and the Huling family remained there until 1952 or so. I am John Huling, Glen Huling's son, John Edward Huling's son, John Marshall Huling's son, Edward Huling's son, and finally George Huling's son from Shaftsbury, Vermont who homesteaded Grand Island. The Maple Grove Cemetery of Grand Island was donated by the Huling family. My father and mother will be buried there. I have many fond memories of Grand Island as do many of you I see. What a special place. I know my family loved it."

I lived in Town Hall Terrace my teen years...had a lot of nice friends there too..That was another world there. A close friend that I had there (Mike Beyer) I have been trying to find for years, too. The only classmate that I have kept in contact with over the years is Martye Haas. A friendship like ours is hard to beat. We brought my mother, Winnie Zarbo to live across from our home in a house Geroge built in 1976. His mother, Mary, followed in 1984. Grand Island community is our extended family. Autumn was the best time of year and we will venture back some day to see the changing of the trees. People are friendly and it is not a fast paced environment. There is a lot of history and it is unforunate that we do not realize what we take for granted as residents in such a beautiful area. I would give anything to be able to drive to the Falls and venture into Canada and the Finger Lakes region and the New England states. So everyone do yourselves a favor and instead of heading West for your vacation travel through some of the most gorgeous country I have ever seen and drop me a line and tell me what I am missing! And another thing you can't get a Teds dog and shake out here!!"

We wish we were back there but the old bones cannot handle the winter temperatures anymore. It was and is a wonderful place to bring up children. We have so many fond memories, like when Mr. Yensan's cows got loose and everyone chased them back up the road. You sure can't get fresh milk like that anymore, and fresh eggs as well. Godfrey's Market was the only grocery store and the post office was in the store. When you had a problem, the natural radar went out and all of your neighbors were there to help. My parents lived there until they passed away 1972 & 1997. I still have relatives living on the Island and love visiting there. There are many fond memories of my years there. Helping (or was I just in the way?) work on the new Little League fields on Staley Road as they were moving from across the street from the Fire Hall. The best of all though were the five summers I spent at Fantasy Island, the last as one of the Brandon Brothers in Western Town ... that was fun! Grand Island holds nothing but fond memories for me."

I have two sisters older than myself, Judy and Janet. Neal Huff was a constable on G.I. for many years, a fireman, and a member of the Masonic Lodge. My sister Nancy, brothers Bob & Colin lived on Schutt Ct. with our parents Bob and Dorothy (Phillips) Cattley from 1953-65. It was the most wonderful place for kids to grow up. My fondest memories are swimming, fishing, boating, sleding down the side of the bridge in winter. Ice skating on frozen ponds, ice cream from the dairy, walking down to Beaver Island and going bowling or just hanging out on the board walk. The boat races, Strawberry Island and the old farmer who let us have chickens and rabbits just for Easter and then we'd return them for a kitten or two. The fireworks on the 4th of July and strawberry shotcake at Trinity Church. My 5th grade teacher, Miss White and the playground at Kaegebein, where in the summer we'd make pretty pot holders. I wish I could remember all my friends but its been a long time. I hope some day to come back for visit and show my husband the wonderful Island I grew up on. Thank you for sharing." Website

His dad told us there was a goat farm on the Inn's present site. John was born at this time (1941). The family moved away to Riverside but John returned in the 1970s. We have returned after leaving the WNY area in 1980s. It was the great Niagara River and the Grand Island experience that drew us back to this place we call home. Another point of interest is that the ferry boat was operating in the 40s. Wouldn't it be grand to bring back the Ferry Boat experience?"
