Sondel Finishes As Reserve Champion - 2004
Click photo for larger view.
The team of Jacquelene Sondel and Blythwood Vermont Topic has finished up the year as Reserve Champion.
Jackie has devoted a large amount of time and patience to achieve the goals she set for 2004. Her 3-year-old Morgan gelding came from New Jersey at the age of 9 months in 2001. Topic has only seriously been under saddle since April of this year. To have come as far as the team has in such a short amount of time is a testimony to the great athletic ability of her gelding and to this young rider's talent in training and riding this 3-year-old to his full ability. They truly are a team and a joy to watch in the show ring.
The community has been represented well by the team bringing Grand Island's name into the show arena at the Niagara County Fair as Reserve Champion in both the Open and Jr. divisions, the Erie County Fair 4-H - Sr. Division Reserve Champion, Open Morgan division at the Erie County Fair with two first place ribbons and one second place ribbon, and recently in Syracuse with Topic taking the Reserve Champion Jr. horse title and Jackie taking 2nd place in Equitation at the Regional level.

Island resident Al Salamone and his team competed last week in the Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships in Sweden. The team came home with a Silver Medal and a spot on the 2006 Olympic Team. The final score between Norway and the US team was 2-1. "I'm told we scored in the final seconds, but the referees wouldn't count it or review the tape. They are happy with their performance. They are a new team, only about five guys remained from the 2002 Salt Lake City team," Al's mother, Susan Salamone, said this week.
The championships are a qualifier for the 2006 Olympics in Torino, Italy. Click http://www.icesledgehockeywc.nu/ for 2004 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships.
The young men represented the United States in Germany in November, Ottawa in December/January, and last week in Sweden for the World Championships, which rotate with the Olympics. "Our Buffalo guys have really been contributing to the tournament," Mrs. Salamone said. According to Mrs. Salamone, the U.S. beat Sweden in the exhibition game 3 - 1. Alexi got 2 assists, Brad scored 1 and Chris scored 1. The USA played Great Britain on April 17th, in the first tournament game and won 3 - 1. Al and Brad each got one assist. Chris Manns scored the game winning goal and also received player of the game.
They played Japan on the 18th, their second game in the tournament and won 4-3. They were down 3-1 with 13 minutes left in the game. Al scored to make it 3-2, then Brad scored to make it 3-3. Then with 1:13 left in the game, Team Captain Joe Howard scored to win it. Chris Manns stopped a breakaway with 30 seconds to go.
Canada was next on April 19th when the U.S. team won 2-1. In another hard-fought victory, trailing 1-0, going into the 3rd period, the U.S. scored twice clinching first place in the their Pool "A" with a 3-0 record.
"We received a phone call after that game," Mrs. Salamone told the Grand Island E-News. "Al was slammed into the side boards in the third period and had to be taken to the hospital for a possible separated collar bone and torn ligaments," she said. Fortunately, Al was able to play in the final game.
On Friday, April 22, 2004, the U.S. team played Sweden, the second place finisher in Pool "B" and won 2-0. Norway, the first place finisher in Pool B, played Canada and won 1-0 (the one point was scored in Sudden Death!).
The United States National Sled Hockey Team earned the silver medal after falling to Norway, 2-1, in the gold-medal game of the 2004 International Paralympic Committee Ice Sledge Hockey World Championship. In a tightly contested game, the U.S. struck first and held on to a 1-0 lead until the third period when Norway notched two goals to clinch its second consecutive title in the event, dating back to 2000.
The U.S., which defeated Norway for the gold medal at the 2002 Paralympic
Winter Games in Salt Lake City, entered the game as the tournament's only
undefeated squad and finished with a 4-1-0 overall record. Official
gold-medal game statistics were unavailable at the time of this writing.
Al Salamone, a sophomore at Grand Island High School, is the youngest member ever of the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team.
