29th Annual Niagara Frontier Antique & Classic BOAT SHOW & Race Boat Reunion - 2006
Bill DeGlopper Photo - Click photo for larger view
The restored boat above is owned by Matt Morsheimer of Honeye, NY. Matt restored the craft and attended the boat show with his family. For more photos of the September 9, 2006 Antique and Classic Boat Show held at the Buffalo Launch Club on Grand Island, NY, click "Boat Show 2006 Photos."
By Bill DeGlopper
Over 200 vintage wooden boats and vintage race boats converged on the Buffalo Launch Club site September 9, 2006 to participate in the 29th annual Antique & Classic Boat Show. The show was sponsored by the Niagara Frontier Chapter ACBS and the Vintage & Historic division of APBA. Entries came from as far away as Arizona and Washington State with 11 states and three countries represented. It was one of the largest shows of its type in the US.
New this year was an enhanced car show. Friday’s activities began with a free afternoon seminar series. The world’s fastest man on water, Ken Warby, one of the presenters, discussed his new attempt to up his 316 mph record. Larry Lauterbach spoke on the history of his family race boat building business. Tom Holmes spoke on the history of the Century Boat Club and business. A huge Pit Pass Party ran from 6-10 p.m. at the clubhouse and was well attended.
Saturday started with apprehension for fans as the skies produced some rainy weather. However, the sun soon came out and 6000 fans came to the site. The place became a beehive of activity as fans viewed the beautiful wooden boats on land and in water. Noisy race boats ran hot lap fly byes, reminiscent of bye gone years when the Launch Club was a regular stop on the racing circuit. Land displays were plentiful; the Field of Dreams swap meet section was diverse. Boats of all size, shape, description and state of repair were included. Everything from canoes, kayaks, sail boats, cruisers, car top fishing boats, and model RC boats were also included with the plentiful Utility hulls, glassics, outboard and inboard race boats.
The evening dinner included over 350 participants and fans. Several awards were announced. Western NY ACBS chapter founder Thomas Frauenheim was honored for his contributions to antique boating. Detroit’s Fearless Fred Alter was honored for his years of contributions to racing. Fred drove over 21 Unlimited hydroplanes in his 40 year career and also has shown his vintage boats at the local show since its inception. The Pioneers of Powerboating, a Michigan based club, announced a new award. It is the Schroeder Schenley Trophy award and will be presented annually at the Buffalo event. This year’s recipient was Tom Bertolini, current chairman of the APBA Vintage & Historic division.
Forty-one boats made an around Grand Island boat tour on Sunday, followed by the ACBS awards luncheon held at the Launch Club. Next year's event will take place on the comparable first weekend after Labor Day.
Editor's Note: Rich DeGlopper served as show chairman and Bill DeGlopper was in charge of the Race boat portion. Other Islanders involved in the planning and preparation included Liz Barker (APBA), Mike Endres, Bob DeGlopper, Gary Roesch, and Sharon Dickinson.

Jessica Kuehne and Alicia Barnaby are members of the Rochester Junior Rhinos under 17 Elite Team that attended a college showcase soccer tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina July 22-25, 2006. In the end, after 7 games in four days, the girls walked away as the 2006 CHAMPIONS! They were 6-0-1 with two goals scored against them in seven games.
They played and won Saturday against New York East, Sunday against Florida and Maryland. On Monday they won against a Connecticut and New Jersey team, which Alicia scored in that game. Goalie Grace Barnard came up big, stopping three of BRYC’s penalty shots. Jessica Kuehne made her penalty kick and the Rochester Junior Rhinos Girls won the title of 2006 Score at the Shore Champions!!!

Tim Phillips Completes His Return To Southern Ontario Sprint Competition - 2006
The 2005 racing season was not kind to Tim Phillips. The veteran campaigner on the Southern Ontario Sprint tour for the first time in his career had new equipment ready to make an assault at the point title and was enthusiastically waiting for opening day when he was diagnosed with cancer. Putting everything on hold, Phillips aggressively sought out the best treatment available and with determination claimed victory over the disease. Now back in the driver seat, he completed the comeback Saturday night, July 8, 2006, at Brighton Speedway where he captured the SOS feature event before a capacity crowd.

GI Bantams Win Lake Shore Baseball Tournament - 2006
Click photo for larger view
From front left are Eddie Shantler, Jon Voyzey, John McGinty and Nick Soos; (back) A.J. Jasek, Nick Antonelli, Ben Tomkins, Ryan Hughes and Dylan Kelly.
The Grand Island Bantams boys 12 and under travel baseball team defeated the Clarence Red Devils in the championship game of the Lake Shore Little League baseball tournament on June 17, 2006.
Following victories over Lake Shore and Boston, and a loss to Clarence in the Round-Robin portion of the tournament, the boys from the Island staged an incredible come from behind, extra inning victory in the championship game. Trailing the Red Devils by a score of 4 – 0 after four innings, the Bantams rallied for four runs in the top half of the fifth inning to tie the score. GI held Clarence scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, working its way out of a bases loaded, no out jam. Neither team was able to score in the sixth inning, forcing the game into extra innings. The Bantam bats came alive again in the top of the seventh, scoring another four runs to take an 8 – 4 lead. Clarence did not go down quietly, however, as they scored three runs in their half of the seventh inning. That was not enough though, and Grand Island earned a hard fought 8 – 7 victory to claim the championship trophy.
The Bantams have developed into one of Western New York’s top teams and are poised to compete in this summer’s busy tournament schedule. If this past weekend’s victory is any indication of things to come, there may be more championships in the team’s future.

Saturday the NY West squad beat the defending National Champions from Maryland 3-1 and closed out the bracket on Sunday against perennial powerhouse Penn West with Allie going all the way in goal for a 4-0 victory. When asked about the team’s success this weekend Allie said, “The competition at this level is the best I’ve seen and we’re very fortunate that the talent on our team runs so deep.” The next stop for the NY West team is the Region 1 Finals in Kirkwood, Delaware on June 24–25 before departing for the regional camp in mid July.

Vessel Safety Checks Scheduled - June 2006
Flotilla 305, the Grand Island unit of The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, will conduct Vessel Safety Checks at Blue Water Marina and Launch Ramps (340 East River Road) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2006.
USCG Auxiliarists will offer free safety checks to boat owners, and additional educational material will also be available at no charge. Boats that successfully meet all the requirements of the free safety check will receive a USCG decal that is placed on the vessel.
A vessel safety check (VSC) is a courtesy examination of your boat to verify the presence and condition of certain safety equipment required by state and the federal regulations. The vessel examiner is a trained specialist and is a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. They will also make certain recommendations and discuss certain safety issues that will make you a safer boater.
This is not boarding or a law enforcement issue. No citations will be given as a result of this encounter. "We will supply you with a copy of our evaluation so that you may follow some of the suggestions given," a spokesman for the Safety Check said this week. "Vessels that pass will be able to display our distinctive VSC decal. This does not exempt you from law enforcement boarding, but you can be prepared to make this a positive encounter," he said.
For further information about vessel examinations, check out the Coast Guard Auxiliary website at
http://www.a0920305.uscgaux.info/.
