High School News - June 2008
By Kaitie Samland (Sophomore) - Student Writer

Thursday, June 19, 2008 . . .Well, the 2007-2008 school year is over. Some people are happy while others, like the seniors, couldn't be more depressed. Our last day of school was a day to say goodbye and get our final signatures in our yearbooks. Next week is graduation and then the seniors will be off on their own. This year was full of new activities thanks to our principals. Not only did we have a pep rally bonfire, we had a powderpuff game and still to come is the trip to Costa Rica. I hope everyone had a great year and good luck to all our seniors. We will miss you all!

High School News - June 2008
By Kaitie Samland (Sophomore) - Student Writer

Thursday, June 12, 2008 . . .The halls of Grand Island Senior High School are filled with bittersweet emotions. Seniors appear excited as they focus on their Senior Prom plans. Close your eyes and you can hear them, as they gossip about so and so was going with you know who but when so and so asked them they liked them but now they want to go with John Doe but he's going with Susie Q. There's talk about pre and post prom plans, along with the buzz of updos and nails, shoes, dresses and tuxes. Yet amongst the midst, there's an undercurrent of sadness as the year winds down. For some it's just another year completed and summer is their time to recoup, for others it means summer school because they just can't stay away from the institution they love so much, for many more it's a time to embark on some of the freedoms that tag along with the hot summer sun. Still, others use this time to grow by taking on another journey like volunteering or work. Seniors, we know, are nervously chewing their nails as they put on a mixed front as they anticipate their next step in life. Are they ready for what awaits them? Has their 13 years of education given them what they need to succeed? Whose job was it? The teachers? The student? The halls, the building, the books, the lockers and everything else that many students claimed to hate, offer security and comfort. I bet everyone who claims they won't look back is going to think about what was more often than not. Way to go Seniors, best of luck to each and every one of you! Remember what Forest Gump's mother said, "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what kind you're going to get!" May everyone get the one you want. As for the rest of us underclassman, rest up, enjoy, broaden your horizon and remember that the school we depise so much will be ready to welcome us back with open doors and we will be eager to return.

High School News - June 2008
By Kaitie Samland (Sophomore) - Student Writer

Thursday, June 5, 2008 . . .We never thought it was ever going to come...the last day of classes is approaching ever so quickly. I believe it's a mere six days. Senior class day is Friday, June 6th. Seniors will begin their day by being served a Tim Horton's breakfast by the junior class, followed by a class slide show and a few speeches then they're off to Beaver Island where the afternoon will be filled with memories to last a life time. Fingers crossed that the day will pass without any infractions and that nobody gets hurt. Kudos go out to my sister, Stefane Samland, for being the recipient of the Grand Island Teachers' Association Scholarship! Mark your calendar for graduation on June 26 at 7 p.m. at Kleinhans Music Hall and remember the exam schedule may be found on the school webpage!

Friday, May 30, 2008. . . Last week the Boys JV Track Team won the JV NFL Championships at N-W, so this week, not to be outdone, the Varsity Team won the NFL Team title at the League Championships at Crosby Field. By winning, they also were able to complete an undefeated 12-0 season. "Our kids ran terrific and competed at a whole new level of competition," according to Head Coach Don Sauer. "I am so proud of their accomplishment because they have worked so hard for this moment and put it all together," Coach Sauer said. "Our captains, Chris Carter and Ryan Hagen, kept the team focused like they were on a mission. They were always checking our point status and seeing where we were supposed to be in points during various stages of the meet," noted Sauer. "I'm not sure, but I think it is the first time since I've been here that we won both Cross Country and Track in the same year."
Leading the way were the "core" distance and mid-distance runners as GI went 1-2 in the 1600 (4:35.05 & 4:36.89) (Tsembelis & Carter), 2-3 in the Steeple (10:01 & 10:03)(Tsembelis & Carter), and 1-3 in the 800 (Tsembelis & Hagen). Those events accounted for 48 points alone. Jared Northrup was the only other athlete to earn a point on the track in an individual event placing 6th in the 400 hurdles. The 800 was an "insane" race with a phenomenal performance. Junior Evan Tsembelis and Senior teammate Ryan Hagen ran the 1st and 3rd fastest times in WNY this season with a blistering 1:54.82 and 1:56.76. They teamed up with Chris Stessing and Carter to take second in the 4x800 with a season best time of 8:17.23. The foursome of Adam Helman, Mike Phillips, Eric Breier and Matt Krupczyk also had their season best with a 3rd place finish of 46.94 in the 4x100 relay. Both relays qualified for Sectionals next week at Jamestown. The 4x400 relay had qualified on time a few weeks ago.
The field events were also impressive. Junior Adam Helman won the Pole Vault and set a new NFL Meet record of 14-7. He broke the League record against N-W with a 15-1 effort. Helman also took 5th in the Long Jump to add points. Senior Tim Boorady won the Shot Put in his final throw to edge out teammate Junior Greg Feathers with efforts of 45' 8.75" to 45' 7" respectively. Feathers came back and took 2nd in the Discus with a 140' 10" effort. Anthony O'Meally tied for 4th in the High Jump (5'- 4"). In the Multi-event, the Pentathlon, the Vikings had two place-winners. Junior Jordan Gibson improved from 3rd last year to 2nd this year with 2263 points. Teammate Senior Rich Karpie took 4th in the event in the first time he ever competed in the event. Even more impressive is that this is Rich's first season in Track & Field. "They got 12 big points in their event to help the team effort", noted Assistant Coach Jim Patterson. "I'm really excited about next year, with both teams winning this season"
The Team has qualified a number of athletes to compete at the State Qualifiers on Friday and Saturday of next week at Jamestown's Strider Field.

BEEP Portfolio Scholarship Winners - 2008

(left) Cheryl Chamberlain, Sara Kupiewski, Ciara Morreale, and GIHS Principal Sandra Anzalone

Grand Island High School offers students an opportunity to create a unique career tool, The Business Education Employability Portfolio (BEEP). This portfolio includes student work in the areas of communications, problem solving, and leadership, just to name a few. After the student creates his/her portfolio, it is then reviewed during an interview with business leaders from the Niagara Frontier Industry and Education Council (NFIEC). Each school that participates in BEEP selects two students to compete for scholarships offered by the members of NFIEC. After interviewing against 40 other candidates, Ciara Morreale and Sara Kurpiewski were two of the 14 selected to receive scholarships this year! Mrs. Cheryl Chamberlain, business teacher, encourages juniors and seniors to participate in this worthwhile program at Grand Island High School. For more information on BEEP please contact her at 773-8820.

High School News - May 2008
By Kaitie Samland (Sophomore) - Student Writer

Thursday, May 22, 2008 . . .Two things I want to discuss in this week's article, one being reality and the other being non reality. I just wanted to share a thought that really didn’t mean to much to me until I did the math. See what you think… It’s something I hear about on an almost daily basis but it’s not something that I truly pay attention to, that being the price of gas. Most teenagers like a lot of Americans earn minimum wage which is currently $7.15 an hour, an average car holds approximately 15 gallons of gas with an average price of $4.00 per gallon. Therefore a minimum wage earner must work just over 8 hours in order to fill the gas tank, think about it…it is one day’s pay! Unfortunately folks, this is reality.
That means this portion is the unreality. What has society succumbed too? We’ve all seen them while clicking through the channels and let’s admit that many of us have stopped to watch before regaining our senses. I’m talking about shows like Rock of Love (VH1) A Shot At Love 2 With Tila Tequila, Date My Mom, I love New York, Parental Control and so on and so on. These shows, aired at all times of the day and night clearly portray fantasized relationships. They use the word love so loosely that it really has no meaning. Teens are given the notion that it’s okay to sleep around until you find the right person and yes it is okay to have a dozen or so women held up in your mansion while the man gets to “know” all of them and as the weeks go by one by one the girls get eliminated until he finds what he believes to be his mate and she proves not to be “the one” that’s okay because next year is another season. Is it possible that “reality” T.V has caused us to have different expectations in life?
Grand Island High School is busy winding down. Senior picnic tickets can be purchased from Mrs. Souliske or Mrs. Bowen and cost $12.00. PTSA Academic Awards on May 29 at 7:30 p.m. High School Senior Class Day is Friday, June 6 and in the evening is Relay for Life. Last day of classes at the high school are June 13 before exams begin. Senior Prom is Saturday, June 14 at Rich’s Atrium, Graduation is June 26 at Kleinhans Music Hall at 7 p.m. Please remember school calendars, exam schedules and almost everything you need to know about school can be found on the Grand Island School webpage. There is a wealth of information and it’s only a click away.

High School News - May 2008
By Kaitie Samland (Sophomore) - Student Writer

Thursday, May 15, 2008 . . .The Junior Prom has come and gone another year. This year on Saturday 10th at the Holiday Inn Justine Vanthoff and Charles Lavallee were pronounced king and queen. Congrats to both of you. Hopefully everyone had a great time! Ready for something new? This year juniors and seniors have the opportunity to participate in a softball tournament with some of the teachers. It is for Relay for Life and there is only a $10 registration fee. Students are able to sign up with Mr. Simpson in room 186.
Well again another crazy story event happened in New York on May 13th. A man by the name of James Gilchriese had a fully loaded 9-mm semi automatic handgun on the I-190. He could have pulled the trigger on anyone which left everyone in suspense. It all began after 6 Tuesday, with a report that a male was hitting someone in his vehicle. Police responded, getting the woman out of the vehicle but Gilchriese did not comply with police, beginning the standoff that did not end until after 9. "He was very unpredictable in a situation like this. You never know what's going to happen," said Sgt. Stephen Mandriak of the New York State Police. The final question is why?

Each year during kindergarten orientation, these high school students take on the task of helping children adjust to what life will be like at Sidway School in a couple of months. Many of these juniors and seniors went to Sidway and love to reminisce about their days at the school and the teachers who they looked up to. High School News - May 2008
By Kaitie Samland (Sophomore) - Student Writer

Thursday, May 8, 2008 . . .Well this is another busy week for students at Grand Island High School. Both this week and next week many students will be taking AP Exams. With half of them already done there are still several left. On Friday is the AP US exam, the AP European History exam and the AP Studio in Art exam. Good luck to all and remember to always double check your work! Not only is this the week for tests but also on Saturday, May 10th is the Grand Island Junior Prom which will be held at the Holiday Inn. It goes from 7-11 p.m. and tickets will not be sold at the door. Hope everyone has a great time!
We have all heard the saying that high school should be the best time of our lives, but after this week I find it very hard to believe. When we thought it was over, trouble enters the high school building one more time. This week several freshman students were badgered on the internet due to their appearances. Now I am just stuck with the question: why would people do such terrible things to others, but I guess there is no exact answer to that.

High School News - May 2008
By Kaitie Samland (Sophomore) - Student Writer

Thursday, May 1, 2008 . . .Once again I need to ask the question...how? Varsity baseball players at Wilson High School are being accused of hazing the junior varsity players on the bus home from a game. Both coaches have been charged with endangering the welfare of a child as part of the continuing investigation into the alleged sexual abuse. The teachers were suspended from their coaching duties and were suspended with pay following their arrests. Hazing, the practice of subjecting newcomers to abusive or humiliating tricks and ridicule, is still fairly common at the high school level. So again I must pose the question how? How does something so vile occur on a supervised bus filled with players, two coaches and a bus driver? Apparently somebody wasn't doing their job, and that makes them equally guilty, if not more so than the perpetrators.
Life is good here at Grand Island High School. AP exams are quickly approaching. Exam schedule may be found on the Grand Island School District webpage. Tonight (Thursday) is the GIHS annual talent show at 7 p.m. Please come out and support our local talent. Also today is PAINT THE TOWN PURPLE:
Show your support for the fight against cancer by participating in Paint the Town Purple Day. Please support this year’s Relay for Life by wearing purple on Thursday. Just a note...Junior prom is scheduled for May 10 at Grand Island High School!

Chris Jurga is April’s K-12 Artist of the Month - April 2008

The Art Department of the Grand Island Central School District is pleased to honor Chris Jurga as the recipient of the “K-12 Artist of the Month” award. Chris is a senior at the high school, and is currently working hard to prepare his portfolio for his Advanced Placement Art class. Thinking about his beginning as an art student Chris says, “When I was a little kid, I noticed that I was good at drawing pictures that I liked.” As he grew, he reviewed his artwork and could see his own progress. This inspired him, and encouraged him to keep going.
Although Chris has great respect for all kinds of artwork, he enjoys using Prismacolor Markers the most, and he also loves to paint. Following graduation, Chris plans to attend Bryant and Stratton College for graphic design. He dreams of moving to a big city and starting his own design firm. All of his k-12 art teachers wish him success with his future in the arts.

High School News - April 2008
By Kaitie Samland (Sophomore) - Student Writer

Thursday, April 24, 2008 . . .An eerie kind of excitement filled classrooms as Grand Island High School went into lockdown mode on Tuesday due to a student discovering a bullet in the hall. Officers and trained dogs did not find anything beyond the bullet and classes resumed almost immediately. Enjoy the peace and quiet on Thursday and Friday with the absence of band students due to their trip to Tennessee. Have fun everyone!
Just a note - the last presale for The Venture Yearbook will be held this week. This will be your last chance to pre-order your yearbook this year. Pre-orders will be taken outside the large cafeteria during all lunches or you may see Mr. Simpson in Rm. 172. The cost is $65. Also, Summer Driver's Ed will be held May 8th and 9th. Pick up your information sheet in the main office. Remember next Thursday is the Grand Island High School annual talent show at 7 p.m. Save the date and come out and support our up and coming stars.
Now I need some help understanding what's going on in Texas. What is wrong with people? Isn't polygamy illegal? and sex with a minor also illegal? How does something like this happen in this day and age? Did everyone in the "outside" community turn a blind eye to the peculiarities of their new neighbors? The mothers who were interviewed on television were obviously brainwashed. Their answers were rote and many times they did not even answer the questions being asked. These adults are sick individuals and their children have fallen victim to their twisted beliefs. Unfortunately, I do not think therapy will help all of them.

High School News - April 2008
By Kaitie Samland (Sophomore) - Student Writer

Thursday, April 3, 2008 . . .This week at Grand Island High School the third marking period closes on Friday. That means that we are definitely nearing the end of the year. The board of education made a decision 4-3 allowing home schooled students the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities. Home schooled students will be able to only participate in intramural sports. Personally, I feel that if you're paying school taxes, your child should be able to benefit from extracurricular activities regardless if you attend public school or if you‘re home schooled.
Students are anxiously awaiting the results of their phys ed volleyball team standings for Friday’s big playoff. Don’t forget AP exam money must be turned in by the end of this week. Anybody interested in volunteering this summer, please stop by the guidance office for applications. Mark your calendars, many of our students will showcase their talents at Grand Island High School’s talent show. Come and be “wowed”!

High School News - March 2008
By Kaitie Samland (Sophomore) - Student Writer

Thursday, March 27, 2008 . . .Unfortunately Grand Island teens don’t listen. Once again, police officers arrested five people for underage drinking at a party on Bedell Road. Apparently loud music drew some attention and the police were called. Remember people, you can’t do anything wrong without someone finding out, especially on Grand Island. Once again I would like to comment on politics. While I agree that Eliot Spitzer had no other choice but to step down due to his poor choice of behaviors, but should Governor Patterson have to air out his “dirty laundry” for choices that he made many years ago? I’m not sure. We are all human, we all make mistakes and hopefully we learn from our mistakes and move on. Personally, I feel that some things are not necessary for all to hear or see.

Thursday, March 20, 2008 . . .Happy Spring! News at Grand Island High School includes the annual Student Olympic Games where the teams raised over $2,400. The money raised is donated to the Special Olympics. Thanks to all who participated. The winning team consisted of Amber Duda, Susan Pioli, Joe Oliverio, and Alex Neutz. Tonight is the DONATE LIFE casual dance. Presale tickets are$4.00 when purchased at school and $5.00 at the door, again another excuse to have fun and support a great cause. Last evening was the all Island Jazz Band performance at the high school. It was another well attended, community supported event. Grand Island definitely has a lot of talent. Great job! Tomorrow kicks off our four-day Easter weekend ~ enjoy!

Thursday, March 13, 2008 . . .And the winners are…….The Nerd Herd! Those were the final words on Tuesday, March 11th for the 10th annual Corporate Bowl held by GISBA. This team consisted of four extraordinarily talented students; Julia Figliotti, Luke Burkhart, Amanda Jaeger and Alex Richter. Congratulations to the Nerd Herd and all the other teams that participated. Donate Life is making a first. Since March is a month of promoting awareness of organ, blood and tissue, this year on March 20th, Donate Life is holding a casual dance. Everyone is welcome to come and are assured to have a great time!
It was with complete disbelief and disappointment that describes the feelings that I felt when I heard of Governor Eliot Spitzer’s escapades. It is with such overwhelming sadness to learn that such a well respected individual that had such contempt for wrongdoers that he himself was no better. Everything he stood for was a lie and it just goes to show that some think they are above the law but ultimately their double lives do catch up to them.

High School News - March 2008
By Kaitie Samland (Sophomore) - Student Writer

Thursday, March 6, 2008 . . .Grand Island High School students entered the first rounds of the annual Corporate Bowl on Tuesday March 4th. With about 40 teams competing, all groups had a chance to show their intelligence when answering random questions based on various subjects. Congratulations to all teams, and good luck to those that move on. You can see these teams compete again on Tuesday, March 11th. Earlier this week, on Monday March 3rd, was the Class of 2010’s Spirit Night fundraiser which was held at Anderson’s. According to one of the class officers, they raised over $500! Great job to everyone! This year’s interact club is holding its annual volunteering for Habitat for Humanity on Saturday, March 8th. All members over the age of 16 are able to participate. Hope you all have a fun time.
Yet again several students were back in the court room on Wednesday to prove that they were indeed innocent. This time, even though the majority pleaded innocent, everyone had the choice to be put on probation for six months, do 20 hours of community service and have none of this information on his/her permanent record or to take this case to trial. I hope everyone chose the right choice and learned a lesson from all of this.

Viking Mock Trial Team Makes Waves In The Courtroom - 2008

Click photos for larger view.

Grand Island High School students recently competed in the first round of the 2008 Mock Trial Event.
The New York State Bar Association creates a fictional trial each year. They send the packet to high schools all around the state in early December. After months of practice, six high school students compete in a real court room against another school in battle of the legal wits. Each team has three witnesses and three lawyers. This year's case is about a high school student who hit a jogger after coming home from senior night activities. The Grand Island Team is advised by Mr. Mike Murray and the team's volunteer legal advisor is Mr. Michael Anthony Rossi. Thirty-eight Erie County schools entered the local tournament. During February the Grand Island team earned a one win and one loss record to qualify for the thirty-two team playoff round.
The Vikings defeated Tonawanda High School on March 1, 2008 and have advanced to the second round of the playoffs. The law team is one of sixteen high schools still fighting for the county legal championship. Lawyers Lauren Emmi, Michelle Rossi and Sam Kilb were amazing. The Grand Island lawyers tossed so many objections at the opposition that their heads were spinning. Viking witnesses Kelsey Borgeson, Nikki Styliades and Kyle Schutrum outwitted Tonawanda and helped the Viking client to win 100 million dollars. The team will compete again this Saturday, March 8 against Williamsville East at the Buffalo City Court House.

Junior Varsity Grand Island Vikings played North Tonawanda at Buffalo State Arena in the Western new York League, Large school division championship. NT won 2-1 in double overtime.
Grand Island received the runner up trophy from the league, presented to VFW Post 9249 Commander Dan McMahon and the VFW Post by Head Coach John Koller and sophomore forwards Laura Koller and Ernie Little.
Grand Island took an early lead off of a power play goal scored by Anthony Russell and assisted by Larry Smith and Nick Bruno at 8:26 of the first period. The game was a tightly fought contest with the goal tending being dominant throughout the game. Grand Island was being back stopped by sophomore goalie Jon Anderson. Anderson was brilliant through the first 3 periods by not allowing a goal until 2:46 in regulation when NT's Michael Kennedy tied the game. The game remained tied through the first overtime and late into the second over time when NT's Steve Grosskoph scored on a screen shot with 2:44 left in the sudden death overtime. This marked the Vikings' 4th Super Saturday appearance in the last five seasons under Coach Koller. The Vikings have finished second in regular season play the last two seasons to NT after moving to the large school classification. The Vikings are proudly sponsored by the Grand Island VFW post where the two organizations have had a long-standing relationship with the hockey teams volunteering during the post's 4th of July festivities.

Indoor Track Team Members Qualify For State Championships -
Team Gets More than Competition On Away Trips - 2008

The Grand Island Cross Country Team traveled to Southeast Massachusetts to compete at the New Bedford Invitational this past fall. The team did very well with the boys' team taking 2nd place and the girls team placing 7th while they also had the boys' winner, Evan Tsembelis setting a new course record. Beyond the athletic accolades, the team also gained a bit of history during their most recent trip. They visited the Whaling Museum in New Bedford, Massachusetts; and then the Historic Trail in Boston, the Boston Aquarium and Fenway Park. "I think is very important to include educational experiences any time we can on our trips," noted Don Sauer, veteran Track and Cross Country Coach. "I try to tie in points of interest, historical, colleges and other note worthy experiences into our trips." It is more than the competition, though the team is always looking for better competition.
Last year the Outdoor Track team competed in the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia. "We saw the obvious in Philly with the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. Taking a tour at Independence Hall gave us a real sense of our early American heritage," noted Sauer. "Running in a race with 45,000 Track fans at the University of Pennsylvania is quite humbling."
Two years ago, the Track team competed at a meet in Chandler, Arizona. They came away with 3 winners and had some very good performances for an early season meet. The team visited 3 universities: ASU, U of Arizona and Northern Arizona University. They also visited Kartchner Caverns and the Desert Museum in the Tucson area. Later, they visited the Red Rock area of Sedona, the Grand Canyon, the Meteor Crater and the Indian ruins at Casa Grande. One time they competed in Show Low with an altitude of over 6,000 feet and it did affect them.
The Indoor Track Team this season has traveled to Cornell, RIT and some athletes competed at Yale University. "Yale is right in the city of New Haven and is so different than the beautiful campus setting of Cornell yet is still one of the oldest universities in the country." These trips are paid for by the individual athletes and their parents. The school pays the entry fee charged to participate while the kids have done donut sales, cookie dough sales and car washes to pay remaining costs.
The team benefits from other aspects from these educational field trips. "Arizona is dealing with a six-year drought so conservation and 'short' showers became the norm. Food is much different, a lot of Spanish is spoken and the environment is very fragile especially in Kartchner Caves. They learn to get along, learn a lot about themselves and how to cope and deal with adversity. We had high altitude one year in Arizona then 90+ temperatures at another meet all in one week and they adapted very well," noted Coach Sauer. "They come back with a "bigger" perspective and appreciation to other parts of the country."
The following athletes from the Grand Island High School Indoor Track Team qualified for the State Indoor Track Championships: Evan Tsembelis, Chris Carter, Ryan Hagen and Adam Helman. They will compete this Saturday (March 8) at Cornell University!!!

High School News - Feb. 2008
By Kaitie Samland (Sophomore) - Student Writer

Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008 . . .Our Grand Island Varsity hockey team had the great opportunity to play at the HSBC Arena in the WNY Club Hockey Championship Game on February 24th. Even though they had lost to Niagara Wheatfield 5-1, they definitely tried their hardest and had many fans cheering them on. Congratulations for all your work guys! Also this week is the start of a new season for many spring sports such as Boys' Tennis and G.I. Rugby. If any guys are interested in Boys' Tennis this spring there will be a brief meeting after school on Thursday in Mr. Pray's room. As for G.I. Rugby, this is a sport for both boys and girls and those interested should pick up the information sheet from Mrs. Kennedy or Mr. Ball. I hope the seasons for both sports are great. The Class of 2010 is trying to raise money for their special events in the future. To help their class, go to Anderson’s on Sheridan Drive Monday, March 3rd between 4-8 p.m. Hope to see you there!

The Grand Island Varsity Hockey Team lost to Niagara Wheatfield 5-1 in the WNY Club Hockey Championship Game played on Sunday, February 24 in the HSBC Arena. The Vikings couldn't match up to the Falcons' powerful scoring duo of Melligan (3 goals) and Ogiba (1 goal). GI held its own, playing valiantly during even-man situations. NW's power play and goaltending were very strong. The Vikings got on the the board in the third period, when Ryan Vertino stole the puck at center ice and scored on a break-away. Grand Island finished the game with all their seniors playing on the ice: Jake Leffler in goal, Kurt Makowski, Anthony Daubney, DJ Perri, Ryan Killian and Neal DeMartin. Ryan Vertino was named MPV for Grand Island. Even though they were disappointed in the loss, the Vikings enjoyed the whole experience of Super Sunday. There were several media events, a practice at HSBC Arena and a breakfast at the Hearthstone Manor with many guest speakers.
Isledegrande.com staff congratulates our Island team on qualifying for this championship game.

High School News - Feb. 2008
By Kaitie Samland (Sophomore) - Student Writer

Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008 . . .This week at GIHS was finally another week to relax! With only one week left in February, March will be definitely busier. March 1 and 2nd is the Sr. All County Jazz Festival, March 4th and 11th is the annual Corporate Bowl where 38 teams will be competing for a scholarship for $7000! March 7 and 8th is the Jr. All County Jazz Festival and finally March 18th is the annual Student Olympics where there are teams that consist of two girls and two boys and they all compete like the Olympics. As you can tell, we are in for a pretty busy month. Hope everyone will participate!
For the majority of the students, they are having a nice relaxing break, while some are grounded for appearing at a party last weekend after the Winter Ball. All 43 students who were ticketed that night had to appear in court this Wednesday, February 20th. Here they were called up and had to plead either guilty or not. As the majority pleaded innocent, those who pleaded guilty have to pay a fine and received 20 hours of community service. The students who were innocent have to reappear back in court in March. I guess that just goes to show you that if you play with fire you will end up being burned.

Two Grand Island Viking Varsity Hockey players have been named to the WNY Club Large School All-Star Team. Neal DeMartin has been named to the 1st team all-stars and Joe Oliverio has been named to the 2nd team all-stars. Throughtout the season, Neal and Joe were consistently in the top 5 for scoring leaders. This is quite an accomplishment, as there are only six forwards chosen from a field of almost 200 players.

High School News - Feb. 2008
By Kaitie Samland (Sophomore) - Student Writer

Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008 . . . This week at GIHS was definitely a busy one. The annual Winter Ball was held Saturday, February 9th where the theme this year was “Saturday Night Fever.” All grades were able to attend and a select few were voted to represent their class. For the Seniors were the King and Queen Allie Weiser and Nick Tomkins, the Juniors were Amber Duda and Alex Neutz, the Sophomores were Kaitlyn Chapin and Chris Gibney, and the Freshmen were Stephen Vitello and Kelly Lorence. Congratulations to all. Also this week on Thursday is Valentine’s Day and to help spread the spirit, the Spotlighters present “Hugs and Kisses.” These were where students had the opportunity to buy each other “Hugs” or Little Huggie drinks and “Kisses” or Hershey kisses for only a dollar. These will be distributed on Thursday to their homerooms. Also on Thursday is the annual Job-Search day where some students get the opportunity to have a real life interview and present their resumes to real business owners. The students will get to learn what they did wrong and how they can fix it when they really do go for a job interview in the future.

High School News - Feb. 2008
By Kaitie Samland (Sophomore) - Student Writer

Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008 . . .Saturday evening will find many Grand Island students dressed in their finest as they attend Winter Ball. Tickets are still available if anyone is interested. Congratulations on a job well done to the cast and crew of Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat. All of your hard work was evident and appreciated by all.
The parents of high school students received their student’s progress reports earlier this week. Hopefully, the majority of us made it through another marking period without any threat of punishment. Remember we are halfway there!
Have you ever given any thought to how you “see” things?" Are you a person who sees things as being either black or white? Or do you “see” things as gray? When you think in terms of black and white, you have definite boundaries. Everything is either right or wrong - no excuses. A “gray” thinker makes allowances and lets emotions affect their judgment. They understand that life does throw a curve ball now and again, and are empathic toward others.
So you ask… is it better to be a person who sees things as being black or white or is a person who sees things as gray? That is a matter of opinion. Personally, I fall under the category of black and white. I appreciate knowing and setting boundaries. I can relate to people who say what they mean, and mean what they say. It’s not that I do not have any emotions or that I don’t have empathy for others, I do, but I like knowing exactly where I stand. I understand that people may have legitimate excuses for not fulfilling obligations but I also feel that the majority of times excuses are not entirely true, but they are given because they know that a gray thinker will accept it. Maybe it’s not as simple as that, and perhaps as I get older my opinion will change, but for now the world in black and white looks pretty good to me!

By Teddy Linenfelser

"Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," awesome, outstanding, amazing! Leaving the high school auditorium and joining the crowd in the Viking Mall after last night's (Thursday) performance was a mixture of joy, emotion, and the feeling of "I wish it would never end." The entire audience seemed to be out there singing its praises.
The large cast of enthusiastic GIHS students kept the music and dancing going and the play got better and better just when we thought it had reached its peak. Too many talented kids to mention, however, my favorite, outside of granddaughter, Amy Bidell, would be Andrew Stange who took the Elvis Presley type part a notch high than Elvis, himself. Don't miss this production - tonight (Fri.) at 7:30 p.m., tomorrow (Sat.) 1 p.m. and tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. Hats off to director Mrs. Carolyn Lokken and to Marty Allen who directed the pit orchestra.
Send me your play photos to teddy@giecom.net for consideration in next week's Isledegrande.com

High School News - Jan. 2008
By Kaitie Samland (Sophomore) - Student Writer

Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008 . . . Grand Island Scholar athletes were given an ice cream reception along with both team and individual recognition for maintaining high averages in academics as well as high scores in athletics. Each honoree received an athlete scholar tee shirt and a pin. Way to go GI!
As many of you know grades closed on January 25, which means we’ve now entered our third semester. Things are definitely on the down hill!
Maybe somebody can help me with my thought process on this…In a world where most everyone is trying to take two steps forward, we hear of someone or an incident that sets our culture backward. What I’m referring to are two separate incidents in two different states that made the news earlier in January. The first occurred in Florida. A man poured hot cooking oil on a 17-month-old and then used a blow dryer to burn the toddler’s skin off. The next occurred closer to home where a man is accused of breaking both arms and one leg of a newborn less then a month old. Unfortunately while searching for this story, I discovered a third story; a man in Pennsylvania was convicted of murdering his 17-month-old daughter because she pulled down his Xbox, a game he supposedly played six to seven hours a day. I guess my first question is “Why?” and my second question is “How?” Three different incidents and three different states, so it’s not specific to certain demographics and the men were not of the same race, yet in each of these cases the victims were defenseless babies. So there is no rhyme or reason. Perhaps people need to think about what kind of a person you’d leave your child with. Anybody can make a baby, but not everyone should be a parent!

High School News - Jan. 2008
By Kaitie Samland (Sophomore) - Student Writer

Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008 . . .Some students were disappointed this week, not just because of regents exams but some of us were given mid term exams as well. Mid term exams have not generally been standard practice at Grand Island High School. Rumors have spread that our new administrators gave faculty a choice to either give exams or students would be in attendance as usual. Personally, I had two midterm exams and one regent exam, and I appreciate the additional ‘down’ time in order to study.
In the most recent copy of The Bridge, Superintendent Mr. Christmann wrote an interesting commentary suggesting that our schools should be run like a business and that like any successful business, you must treat your customers with respect. He further says that our first level of customers must be our students and the next level of customers are the parents of our students. While I applaud Mr. Christmann for wanting feedback from the community in regards to how we feel this “business” is being run, I can’t help but feel that I’m getting a mixed message. If you’ve seen the news lately then you’ll have better understanding of where I’m coming from. The newscast that I’m referring to was in regards to a different communities and how people were concerned with their school district, when it came to the Board of Education. It appears that the board of education had a few stipulations before the public could speak. In order to participate in Voice of the People, one had to sign up in advance and then you are only given a few minutes to speak. I discovered that unfortunately the Grand Island School District has similar rules. So that makes me wonder whether or not our voices will truly be heard!

Indoor Records Fall At Yale
Boorady Takes 5th, Tsembelis 8th
Mile & 400, 4X200 & Distance Medley Records Fall - 2008

The Grand Island Indoor Track Team continues to break records. Members of the team competed at Yale University, January 18-19, and had impressive performances breaking three school records. The 4x200 Relay of Adam Helman, Matt Klock, Jared Northrup and Patrick Gallagher set a new school record with a 1:40.20 effort. The Distance Medley placed 8th overall and second in their race, setting a new school record of 11:05.80. Evan Tsembelis, Patrick Gallagher, Jordan Gibson and Chris Carter made up the foursome. In the Invitational Mile, Evan Tsembelis placed third re-setting his own school record with a 4:29.70 in his race while teammate, Chris Carter, ran his best time placing second in his race with a personal best of 4:34.77. Jordan Gibson set a new school record in the 400 with a 55.88 effort, placing 7th in his race. The Indoor Track Team is coached by Donald Sauer.

High School News - Jan. 2008
By Kaitie Samland (Sophomore) - Student Writer

Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008 . . .This week on Sunday, January 13th was the annual DECA regionals which were held at Grand Island High School. At this event more than 500 students from various schools in Western New York participated, including Grand Island. All members who won their individual event now have the opportunity to compete in Rochester! I would like to congratulate Mrs. Cheryl Chamberlain and all members who had participated. I would also like to congratulate the band, Cryptic Haze, that performed on Friday January 11th. This band consists of four extremely talented Grand Island high school students: Cody Hogrewe, Zach Winter, DJ Perri, and Kyle Kraft. Congrats again guys!
Next week is regents week for GIHS. That used to mean that the majority of people had off and time to relax but this year is different. Now many more students will be coming in to take mid terms created by their teachers. Also, next week is already the end of the second marking period. Only a little time left to change your grades, so I would start opening a book or two.

DECA students from all over Western New York converged on Grand Island High School on Sunday, January 13th for the annual DECA Regional Conference. DECA, a national business and marketing club, is an authentic experience for high school students and this conference is the first stop on the way to state and national ceremonies. Students, numbering 550, competed in 29 different business events such as job interview, accounting, and decision making role-plays. The entire high school and part of Connor Middle School were utilized for these contests. Business and community leaders act as judges for these events and their continued support of DECA enables students to prepare for their future careers. DECA Advisor Cheryl Chamberlain coordinated this year's conference and was aided by numerous faculty and staff members, school district board members, local business leaders, parents and student volunteers. High School News - Jan. 2008
By Kaitie Samland (Sophomore) - Student Writer

Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008 . . .This week for Grand Island is the start of competition for many. Grand Island’s 10th annual Corporate Bowl will be held on March 4th and 11th. All students are allowed to join with a group of no more or less than four people. If you do win the Corporate Bowl this year, you may possibly receive scholarship money so don’t forget to sign up! Also this week on Sunday is the DECA regionals which will be held at the High School. All members chose to work solo or with a partner and which category they would like to compete in. I would like to wish the best luck to all members competing.
As the school year goes on, our principals keep coming up with new, great ideas. This time it involves this year’s boys basketball team. This event is called “Can You Shoot a Basket” and will be held on Friday. During half time, some random fan will be chosen to try to make a basket. There will be prizes created by Powerade and if you can get all four shots, you win an MP3 player! Good luck to the fans and the players!

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Coming To GIHS - 2008

The sounds of Disco, Rock and Roll, Country Western, French Ballads, and the Charleston emanate each day from the doors of the high school auditorium. It is not a musical revue but final preparations for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, set to play Thursday, January 31, Friday, February 1, and Saturday, February 2. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is the retelling of the Biblical story of Joseph from the book of Genesis. The story is explained to the audience via the narrators (Alex Davis, Shannon Farmer, Julia Figliotti, Rachel Gaydosh, Ciara Morreale, Rachel Olszewski, and Sarah Stenzel). Joseph (Sean Hook) is the favorite son of Jacob (P.J. Lemme). Joseph, who is able to interpret dreams, is the envy of his eleven brothers (John Gannon, TJ Slipko, Andrew Fix, Matthew Little, Tim Lewis, Lee Becker, Patrick Sexton, Nick Kelly, Griffin Smith, Kearney Erhard, and Noah Rothberg). In a fit of jealousy they sell Joseph into slavery.
The brothers and their wives (Kim Snell, Jessica Sturniolo, Kahla Cerrillo, Alicia Sommer, Liz Restey, Giovanna Andolina, Kaitlin Hager, Kara Dudley, Lauren Fonte, and Alyssa Accardo ) tell Jacob that Joseph has been killed. Meanwhile in Egypt, Joseph has gained the trust of his owner, Potiphar (Jacob Ferrante). He has also caught the wandering eye of Mrs. Potiphar (Amy Bidell). Potipahr, misunderstanding Joseph, jails him. It is there he interprets the dreams of the Maid (Tara Hook) and the Baker (Allie Boron). News of Joseph’s ability to read dreams travels to Pharaoh (Andrew Stange), who summons Joseph to his court.
In Act II Joseph interprets the dreams of Pharaoh the King. He predicts seven years of plenty followed by seven years of starvation. Joseph again rises to a position of importance. His brothers, by this time, have hit hard times. They arrive at court and petition Joseph, whom they do not recognize, for assistance. Joseph does not reveal his identity but sets one of his brothers up to appear as a thief. The brothers beg for his mercy, and, seeing their unselfishness, Joseph reveals his identity. The family reunites for Joseph’s triumphant arrival home.
Directors Michael DeDario and Carolyn Lokken are working with an ensemble of over 70 students who complete the cast of Ishmaelites, Do Wop chorus, court servants, and townsfolk. A student orchestra led by Mr. Martin Allen will accompany the ensemble, and students taking an advertising class, under the guidance of Mrs. Cindy Wynne have designed a poster and program logo.

• Curtain Time 7:30 p.m.
• General Admission $7.00

High School News - Jan. 2008
By Kaitie Samland (Sophomore) - Student Writer

Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008 . . .Goodbye 2007 and welcome 2008! It was definitely a roller coaster ride for the Grand Island School District, particularly the high school. Some positive reflection into the past will spotlight our school musicals, band, orchestra and choral concerts. Our scholar athletes were honored for their hard work both in school and on the field. We welcomed many new faces at the start of this school year, particularly Mr. Arroyo who is assigned to watch over 9th and 10th grade. Relay for life hit an all time high despite the horrible weather. Girls Tennis had a 14-0 season, breaking an all time record. Unfortunately along with the positive comes some negative and that seems to be what people remember. Small things like the flip flop issue, bigger things like underage drinking at a birthday party to drug issues and bomb threats. It’s sad that many of the good things we do get overshadowed by the bad. Perhaps 2008 will prove to be a better year for all!
Don’t forget Regents exams are being held the week of January 22 through the 25th. The Viking was sent out in December but for those of you who threw it out, the exams and their times are located on the
Grand Island web page. For all of our musical lovers the high school production of Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat will be presented on January 31, and February 1 and 2, 2008.
