A beautiful day graced the lawns of River Lea in Beaver Island State Park Wednesday, June 22, 2005 where the dedication ceremony of the gates, once the entry point to River Lea, took place and was witnessed by about 100 people. The gates were erected sometime before 1908 by the James W. Tillinghast family who acquired them from the "Central Railroad." The gates were purchased at auction in 1962 when the state had scheduled the demolition of several beautiful, old mansions including the River Lea farmhouse, circa 1873. Mike Steffen, the high bidder, had them installed at his Towerwood Road property, since purchased by the Matthew S. Makowski family, who has donated them back to River Lea and the Grand Island Historical Society. A group of Island residents contacted the State of New York in 1962 and recommended that the State buy the River Lea property and save the historic farmhouse, once visited by President Grover Cleveland in his youth. That same group of community minded Islanders formed the Grand Island Historical Society and were given the use of the house and property for the Society's headquarters.
Society President Curtis Nestark introduced speakers Edward Rutkowski, Deputy Director, NYS Parks; Erie County Legislator Charles M. Swanick, Town Councilmember Dick Crawford (for Supervisor Peter McMahon), Town Historian Teddy Linenfelser and Michelle Makowski representing the Makowski family.
Miss Makowski gave an emotional overview of her late father's battle with cancer, and the fact that having the gates returned to their rightful place at River Lea would also serve as a memorial to her dad. A plaque will be placed on the gate structure in memory of Matthew S. Makowski. Also in attendance were Tommy Makowski and Catalina Makowski.
Grand Island Historical Society members provided music by Brent Minet, beverages, lunch and an outstanding cake decorated with the historic gates surrounded by flowers and landscape. Assisting Society members were Kacey White, Alicia Sommer and Kahla Cerrillo of Girl Scouts from Troop #437.

Gates Of River Lea Dedicated Next Week - 2005
The dedication of the returned gates of River Lea, headquarters of the Grand Island Historical Society, will take place Wednesday, June 22, 2005 from 1-3 p.m. in Beaver Island Park, Grand Island.
Town, County and State Parks officials and the donors of the gates, as well as members of the Historical Society, will participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1:30 p.m. The program will be followed by a reception. The public is invited to attend.
The gates were removed from River Lea when the State Parks acquired the property in 1962, and are being generously returned by the family of Matthew Makowski. Modern Disposal Company has donated the restoration work and the re-installation has been done by the Beaver Island State Park staff.
Historic Gates Of River Lea Returned - Dedication Planned - 2005
"The most significant thing to happen at River Lea since the restoration of the house", is how President Curtis Nestark of the Grand Island Historical Society characterizes the ceremony to take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, 2005 at River Lea in Beaver Island Park, Grand Island. At that time, the returned historic gates of River Lea will be dedicated at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at River Lea. The public is invited to attend this once-in-a-lifetime event.
River Lea, the historic farmhouse in Beaver Island Park, was once the summer home of Lewis F. Allen, prominent Buffalo businessman, Grand Island farmer and uncle of Grover Cleveland. In the early 1960's, when New York State acquired the properties along the East River, the house was scheduled for demolition. The gates at the East River Road entrance were acquired by Mr.
and Mrs. Michael Steffan and installed at their home on Grand Island. After over forty years on Towerwood Road, the family of Matthew Makowski, recent owner of the property, has generously returned the gates to River Lea. The gates will be mounted on the original stone pillars by Beaver Island staff and a garden will be planted, courtesy of Grand Island Garden Center.
The River Lea farmhouse was saved and restored by a dedicated group of Grand Islanders, who formed the Grand Island Historical Society. Under an agreement with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, River Lea has served as the Society's headquarters ever since.
The Grand Island Historical Society appreciates the cooperation of the State Parks, Modern Disposal, which refurbished the gates, the Grand Island Garden Center, and especially the generosity of the Makowski family for making this restoration possible.

Every year the town's fourth grade classes study the history of Grand Island and then are treated by the Grand Island Historical Society, to a bus tour of its historical sites. Society member Maggie Gushue serves as chairman and Mary Cooke is bus tour coordinator. First to make the tour on Tuesday, April 8, 2003 were the Huth Road School students.
This year's event began with a visit to River Lea in Beaver Island State Park. Society docents described what life was like in the mid-1800s as the children toured the home. The next stop on the tour was to historic Ferry Village. The students traveled past Tucker's Store, the last remaining "general store," the Bedell House site, the old ferry landing, Davern House and Davern's Tavern, which is now the Niagara River Station Fishing Club. Also mentioned was the Staley House, home of the first island telephone switchboard and the fact that Ferry Village at one time had its own gas well, sewer system and water tower.
The next destination was the Holiday Inn area at the east end of Whitehaven Road. Along the way the last remaining ice house was viewed at the old Rumsey farm on East River Road. The ice was taken from the river in the winter and would last until the summer in the specially designed house. At the Holiday Inn, the students were told of two historic events. The first was Ararat, the Jewish city of refuge that never came to be. The second was the Whitehaven Settlement, Grand Island's first industrial development established in 1834. All that remains of the settlement today is the smokehouse, saved when the Holiday Inn was built in the early 1970's.
The last stop was to view the smokestacks jutting out of the water just off shore at East River and Kirkwood Drive. These stacks belong to the SS Corona, a wooden steam-powered ship built in 1869. This ship transported passengers and freight for many years on Lake Michigan and Lake Erie. A fire broke out on November 18, 1898 and the Corona burned to the waterline and sank.
