Huth Road Elementary's Food, Toy Drive Benefits Neighbors Foundation - 2007
The Neighbors Foundation of Grand Island provides a food pantry and offers aid to Grand Island families experiencing financial setbacks. The Foundation sponsored a Special Holiday Collection to be distributed by December 18th and Huth Road Elementary has participated in its food drive for many of years, establishing a reputation for its generosity. "For this year’s drive we have encouraged our students, teachers and staff to bring in toys, non-perishable food items, paper products, and personal care items for the week of December 6th -14th," a school spokesman said this week. "Our service club members made morning announcements to remind everybody about the food for families drive. We want to thank the students, parents, teachers and staff at Huth Road Elementary for making this year’s food drive a huge success!" she said.

It’s a win-win situation when middle schoolers and elementary students can team up to benefit their larger community. And that’s exactly what happened during this holiday season between Mrs. Mary Jane Fonte and Mrs. Marcia McHenry’s Family and Consumer Science students at Veronica E. Connor Middle School and Mrs. Diane Lipp’s third graders at Huth Road Elementary School. The halls of the middle school were filled with the aroma of 1000+ freshly baked sugar cookies which the students prepared, wrapped and froze for the next step in the Interdisciplinary process. Mrs. Lipp’s students added the frosting, sprinkles and a little bit of love before selling them for the week of December 10th to the 14th to the students and faculty of Huth Road Elementary school. Thank you to everyone who donated the frosting, bags, and sprinkles for the fundraiser. What was learned by this exchange between schools? The eighth graders realized that, although they had graduated from elementary school, they could give back to others by using some of their culinary skill as well as profit from their Entrepreneurship projects to provide 90 dozen cookies. Consequently, the third graders learned to interact with their customers and put their math skills into action making change as they raised money for the 2008 Relay for Life event scheduled for the first Friday in June. And how fitting that this joint project should debut in the year of the newly announced Relay for Life theme: “Team Up For A Cure”! Last year the event sold over 2,200 cookies and made $1,208. "We are looking forward to another successful year!" a spokesman for the project said this week.

A performance from "Kids on the Block" was recently held at Huth Road Elementary School. The program consisting of puppets and puppeteers is presented by the Museum of Disability History, a project of People Inc. Third and fourth grade classes enjoyed the puppets and presentation. The overall goal was for children to have a better understanding and acceptance of other children regardless of their disabilities.

A Delightful Evening… with More to Come! - December 2007

Thursday evening, December 6th was quite a musical evening for members of Huth Road Elementary's 4th and 5th grade choruses. The Boys Chorus, Girls Chorus, Select Chorus and the combined choruses from Huth Road School presented a delightful evening of music for an almost packed house of parents, family and friends. 125 fourth and fifth graders participated. Some hits of the evening were "Away From the Mistletoe" sung by the boys, "Gonna Catch that Santa" sung by Select, and "Instrument of Peace" sung by the combined groups. The choruses are led by Mrs. Carol Horrigan, vocal music teacher at Huth Road. Members of the 3rd grade chorus will be presenting their holiday concert Friday, December 21st at 9:15 a.m. at Huth Road.

Library's Summer Reading Program - 2007

   Once again the summer 2007 reading program at Grand Island Memorial Library was a huge success. Students from Sidway, Kaegebein, and Huth Road Elementary schools participated in the New York State Summer Reading Program, in conjunction with the Grand Island Memorial Library. The theme this year was “Get a Clue at your Library and Investigate some good books.” The students were required to read eight books throughout the summer and return a completed form to school in September when school began.
   As a part of the Huth Road Elementary school’s summer reading celebration, 279 children from all grades were invited to a party where they enjoyed a tasty treat and played games. A big thank you to the Huth Road PTA as well as Mrs. Julie Estenoz, Mrs. Renee Akers, Mrs. Pat McMurray, Mrs. Reenie Peppers, and Mrs. Lauren Sutton for all of their help and support!
   Each year, the librarians and reading teachers from all elementary schools meet with Mrs. Anne Slater from the Grand Island Memorial Library to plan for the summer ahead. They are looking forward to planning yet another successful summer reading program in 2008.

Character Counts Program Reinforces Our Viking Values - 2007

   At the beginning of the school year Huth Road Elementary School implemented a new program called Character Counts. Overall it would reinforce the current Viking Values that are “Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be safe.” Each month a character trait is concentrated on such as respect, citizenship, fairness, trustworthiness, just to name a few. These topics will be discussed in the class room, on the bus, on the morning announcements and for the town meetings that are held each month in the auditorium. During this time, the children will have the opportunity to learn more about the character trait, by reading books, viewing a short video that models the trait and writing about the topic in the classroom. Each teacher then selects and writes about one student in their class who models the character trait the best. The 22 students get their picture taken and is displayed on our Character Counts wall of honor. This program is off to a great start and the modeled positive behavior is catching on very fast throughout the school and home for all of the students who attend Huth Road Elementary school.

   Huth Road Elementary School Principal Mrs. Mary Haggerty greets the following students who were winners of a fire truck ride to school. Pictured left to right in Picture 1 are Olivia Turck, Ian Hardison, Brandon Weissman and in Picture 2 are Victoria Botticello, David Bauman, and Jordan Cooke. Thank you to all of the volunteer firefighters for coming to our school last week to teach all of the students about fire safety during fire prevention week and a chance for the ride to school in a fire truck.

   After reading literature about life on a ranch, second graders at Huth Road School made their reading come to life! Over 125 students dressed in their finest western gear to add to the fun. The cowboys and cowgirls gathered together in the gym for a Hoe-down, complete with singing and dancing. Mrs. Beth Boron led the western themed singing with her guitar, and Mrs. Carol Horrigan led the cowpokes in country line dancing. Other participating classes were Mrs. Anna Agnello, Miss Kristin Donnelly, Miss Heidi Mesmer, Mrs. Jeanne Percival, and Mrs. Janine Schroeder. A good time was had by all - yee-haw!

   The students from Mrs. Beth Boron's 2nd Grade class at Huth Road Elementary School made globes out of balloons as part of their study of maps and globes. Many thanks to the room helpers, Mrs. Wynne, Ms. Trottnow, Mrs. Klie, Mrs. Meaney, Mrs. Fluger, Mrs. Shickluna, Mrs. Thompson, and Ms. Wilke who came in to help the young geographers place their continents and oceans in the right place, using the equator as a guide. This was a hands-on activity that gave each student an original globe to take home as the learning moved from the classroom to the home and beyond!

   As part of Huth Road Elementary School's enrichment program, sponsored by the PTA, Hawk Creek Wildlife Center's Mr. Matt Zymanek visited the Huth Road second graders and taught them about owls through a demonstration. The students learned about different types of owls, their habitats, and conservation. Mr. Zymanek is shown holding a barn own, native to Grand Island, and a snowy owl.

Box Tops For Education Benefits Huth Road Elementary - 2007
   July 12, 2007 . . .Box Tops for Education and the Campbell's Labels for Education Programs are not new to Huth Road Elementary School families. However, Huth Road PTA member Barbara Brown, is asking the community to get involved with saving the UPC's (dollars for points), not only for the Huth Road School but for all Island schools. A suggestion has been made to have a competition among Island schools with the school collecting the largest amount of UPC labels, lids etc. proclaimed the winner with a possible prize awarded.

   The Huth Road Elementary 2nd grade classes held their field day on Tuesday, June 12th. Games played included sack races, two-man no-hands ball race, musical rugs and more. Before a pizza lunch was served, all the students lined up while the teachers tossed tootsie rolls in the grass, and then they raced to find them.

"Our Favorite Stories from Wayside School" - 2007

The students from Mrs. Lipps, Kopf, DeBacco and Dickinson's 3rd Grade Class put on a play that included three performances for family, students and teachers at Huth Road Elementary. This is the second annual production of this play at Huth Road Elementary School. The students worked for 6 weeks on character development, stage presence, voice inflection and memorization of lines. The play was written by teachers and was adapted from popular children's book series Wayside School by Louis Sachar. Mrs. Horrigan, Music Teacher, provided accompaniment on piano. Thank you again to all for your help to make this years play a great success!

Huth Road Service Club Read-a-Thon - 2007

The 4th and 5th grade Service Club at Huth Road Elementary hosted a school wide Read-a-Thon, where all students read as many pages as they could for 20 minutes and got pledges from family and friends. Huth Road Elementary School students raised $2057.25 to be donated to Heifer International to be used to purchase the following products for needy people and communities around the world: cows, oxen, water buffalo, sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits, llamas, bees, tree seedlings, seeds. For more than 60 years, Heifer International and its supporters have been providing a better way to help families and communities escape poverty and hunger by providing them with sustainable means of supporting themselves. Since 1944, Heifer International has helped more than 7 million families, 38 million men, women, and children in more than 125 countries improve their quality of life and move toward greater self-reliance. Diane Greenaway, a representative from Heifer International, visited Huth Road on May 29, 2007 to present first-hand information about her experiences helping people around the world through Heifer.    Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, all of the fifth graders from Huth Road School enjoyed a field trip to Niagara Falls on Wednesday, June 6th. The students, teachers, and parent chaperones went on the Maid of the Mist and the Cave of the Winds Tours and enjoyed a picnic lunch.

Kaegebein/Huth Road Schools Enjoy Captivating Author Visit - 2007

   The students at Huth Road Elementary School and Kaegebein Elementary recently had a wonderful opportunity to listen to the Beauty and the Beast Storytellers spin their tales and enjoy the art of storytelling. This program was part of the annual author visit organized by the librarians at Huth and Kaegebein, Ms. Vinnie Passanese and Mrs. Pat Rizzuto, and sponsored by the PTA.
   Beauty and the Beast Storytellers is a husband and wife team of Mitch Weiss and Martha Hamilton. Winning audiences and critical acclaim throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia since 1980, they are renowned for their work in teaching the art of storytelling, and are also award winning authors and recording artists.
   In preparation for their visit, students at both schools were exposed to literature and folklore from many countries around the world and participated in a variety of creative writing and storytelling activities. The authors spent a day at each school (April 3rd and 4th) where they gave four performances throughout the day, one for each grade level. At Huth Road, the librarian arranged a breakfast before school so teachers could mingle with the guest authors. An “Authors Luncheon” for students followed the morning presentations. Students in each class were asked to write an essay about why they would like to have lunch with the authors. One student from each class was selected to represent their class at a special lunch in the library with Mitch Weiss and Martha Hamilton.
    At Kaegebein, the authors enjoyed a luncheon with the faculty, and Kaegebein’s Girls’ Chorus, under the direction of Mrs. Renee Michki performed a selection from the musical Beauty and the Beast for the authors.
    “Mitch and Martha’s Author Day Visit” was wonderful! Their personal warmth combined with their love for storytelling left our children with a special gift…the knowledge that they to can make up and also tell great stories, and preserve this oral tradition.

Earth Day Clean-Up At Huth Road Elementary School - 2007

   In celebration of Earth Day, the children from Mrs. Diane Lipp, Mrs. Mary Kopf, and Miss DeBacco’s third grade class helped to beautify the grounds at Huth Road Elementary School. The class participated in Earth Day activities in the classroom and brought what they learned outdoors to put the clean-up into action. After splitting up into three groups, and collecting the garbage, the class collected a total of four large bags of garbage! Many things, such as the amount of garbage they collected, and the “treasures” of golf balls they had found, surprised them! Earth Day at Huth Road Elementary School was taught in one of the greatest ways – keeping our grounds clean and Earth friendly. Pictured above are some of the students in Mrs. Lipp, Mrs. Kopf, and Miss Marisa DeBacco’s third grade class.

   The students in Mrs. Percival's 2nd grade classroom received a visit from the Buffalo Sabres mascot, Sabretooth, on Thursday, April 5th. The class displayed number stories from the Sabres hockey statistics.

   The 17th annual Huth Road Elementary School talent show took place on Friday, April 6, 2007. Mrs. Patricia Chapin, a fifth grade teacher at the school, served as the emcee. Bob Banks who always served as emcee and has retired was a special guest at the show.

Huth Road Students Research New 7 Wonders of the World Candidates - 2007

   March 22, 2007 . . .For their semester research project, the third grade students in Mrs. Karen Schauger's class at Huth Road Elementary are researching candidates for the New 7 Wonders of the World campaign. The Seven Wonders web site explains the project as it is being run on a world-wide level - to check out more details go to: www.new7wonders.com. Students have researched and learned enough about their candidates to design a poster that will convince other children in the school to vote for one of the 21 New 7 Wonders candidates. This has incorporated persuasive writing, research skills using written sources and the Internet, and computer skills. Mrs. Amy McMann's 3rd grade class also worked on the project and between the two classes they researched all 21 candidates for this new honor.
   Jamie Mancuso, the Teaching Assistant for the Grand Island School District's Technology department, has been instrumental in adapting this idea and the resources available to a 3rd grade level, both academically and computer-skill-wise. She taught the students how to make posters on the computer using Printshop, importing images from several online sources to show a picture of the candidate and its location. This really took the project into the 21st century and beyond the days of poster board and paint!
   The classes are nearing completion of the posters. When they are done they will display them in the hallways at school, making viewers aware of this real-world event and their chance to help decide on the next 7 Wonders of the World by voting online.

Huth Road Bazaar To Feature Operation Safe Child - 2007
   The Huth Road Elementary School PTA's annual bazaar will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 24, 2007 at the Huth Road Elementary School, 1773 Huth Road. Operation Safe Child will be available and Grand Island High School Sophomore Charlie Lavallee and a Boy Scout in Troop 510 will be leading an Operation Safe Child ID badge to complete the requirements for his Eagle Scout Project.
   The Operation Safe Child ID systems utilize the latest digital fingerprinting technology and high-resolution photography. Each card contains a child’s name, biological information, and a fingerprinting image of both index fingers. The card, which can be made in less than two minutes, can be easily carried in a wallet and can be immediately presented to law enforcement officials to eliminate the wasted minutes that are often used to gather information rather than search for a missing child.
   Forms will be sent home with all Huth Road Elementary School students and will be available at the Bazaar. There will no charge for the cards. For more information on the project, call Charlie at 773-7424 or email dlavallee@adelphia.net.

   During the past few weeks, before the winter break, the students at Huth Road Elementary School participated in Parents are Reading Partners or PARP program. Together, with the help of the PTA, many activities were planned for the students. Festivities wrapped up just before the winter break on Friday, February 16th when community leaders such as our Town Supervisor Peter McMahon, Superintendent of Schools Robert Christmann, Director of Pupil Personnel Carol Jones, Director of Technology & Instruction Molly Talty, Councilman Gary Roesch, District Safety Officer Chris Pyc, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum Instruction Karen Karmazin, Erie County Legislator Michele Ianello, retired teachers Candice Mye and Debbie Beis, Town Clerk Patricia Frenzel, Retired Principal Peggy Koppmann, GI Memorial Library Librarian Anne Slater, Principal Sandra Anzalone, Principal Denise Dunbar, Councilwoman Mary Cooke, Grand Island Town Justice Sybil Kennedy, Director of Transportation Jack Burns, Assemblyman Sam Hoyt, and Retired Teachers Assistant Lorraine Szczublewski; all read books to the classes at Huth Road Elementary School. This reading program was reinforced with "Readers are Leaders" bookmarks from the Huth Road Library Media Center. "On behalf of Huth Road Elementary and the Huth Road Elementary PTA, we would like to thank the "leaders" for their generous time and stories shared with our students."

Huth Road PTA Announces Annual Bazaar - 2007
   The Huth Road Elementary School PTA's annual bazaar will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 24, 2007 at the Huth Road Elementary School, 1773 Huth Road. The day will feature Food, Drink, Games, Prizes, Baked Goods, Basket Raffle and Family fun for everyone!

   The Huth Road Elementary students in Mrs. Patricia Chapin, Miss Courtney Jones, and Miss Roseanne Russo's fifth grade looping class researched cultures and celebrations from around the world as part of their Social Studies unit just before Christmas 2006. The cultures and traditions they researched were Winter Solstice, Ramadan, Kwanzaa, Christmas, Chinese New Year, Poinsettia Day, Santa Lucia Day, Hanukah, Boxing Day, Diwali, and Saint Nicholas Day. The students presented their final projects at the Huth Road School annual winter assembly.

Huth Road 2nd Graders Create Pony Express Mail System - 2007

    After reading about the Pony Express, second graders at Huth Road Elementary School created their own version of the mail delivery system. Students wrote letters and delivered their mail on "horseback". It was a great way to enrich understanding of an important event in American history!
