The Grand Island Memorial Library now has in its large collection, a copy of award winning author Thom Hatch's "Black Kettle: the Cheyenne Chief Who Sought Peace but Found War." Published by John Wiley & Sons, it is the only one of its kind in the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library system, according to Librarian Lynn Alan Konovitz. The book, donated by Island resident Peggy McNulty Hooper, won a "Spur Award" from the prestigious Western Writers of America.
Thom moved to Grand Island, NY in 1952 and spent much of his childhood here. He graduated from high school in Ohio, joined the U. S. Marine Corps, served in a combat unit in Vietnam for thirteen months, and started his writing career as a newspaper reporter in Pennsylvania. He settled in Colorado in the early 1970s, where he has been a freelance writer, mainly in film, TV, and radio, and has also been a frequent contributor to national publications. His email address is "authorthom@aol.com".
The following is taken from the Wiley Publishing Site and gives an excellent description of the story: "As white settlers poured into the west during the nineteenth century, many famous Indian chiefs fought to stop them, including Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, and Geronimo. But one great Cheyenne chief, Black Kettle, understood that the whites could not be stopped. To save his people, he worked unceasingly to establish peace and avoid bloodshed. Yet despite his heroic efforts, the Cheyennes were repeatedly betrayed and would become the victims of two notorious massacres, the second of which cost Black Kettle his life. In this first biography of black Kettle, historian Thom Hatch at last gives us the full story of this illustrious Native American leader, offering an unforgettable portrait of a chief who sought peace but found war."

Young Isle Resident Wins Library Contest - 2005

September 1, 2005 . . . Grand Island Memorial Library staff announces Island resident Mary Kneer, 10, as one of ten winners in the essay contest, "Why I Love My Library," sponsored by the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library. Mary won a prize package, including a CD player, books on CD and music on CDs valued at $150.
   Her essay follows:
This summer, one of the most exciting things my Mom would say is, "We're going to the library." The library is a great place to just break away from the noise, read and if you don't finish your book when it's time to leave, you can check it out with your library card and return it when you're finished at no cost. Me, my Mom and Dad all have library cards. There are all the books you can think of there! The most you can take out is fifty books! It's like my own giant reading room. Sometimes, I walk in and read for hours at a time. But just to make things (even) better, you can borrow tapes and use computers!
My brother gets tutored there, and while he's being tutored, I either do my homework or go to some fun library activity. So, as you can see, my family and friends are all fans of the library. It's a great place to focus and since it's only a three-minute bike ride, it makes things a lot easier. Even if I don't win this contest, I'm glad I got to tell you how much I loved my library. I showed how much I cared by doing whatever possible to prevent it from closing. Why am I doing all this? Because the library taught me a lesson: a lesson I'll teach my kids, Reading is Fundamental.

Island Students Win Battle of the Books Competition - 2005

The Grand Island Memorial Library was crowned champion at the 7th Annual Battle of the Books, a reading competition supported by Erie County libraries, and held August 6, 2005 in the Erie Community College South gym in Orchard Park. Twenty-six teams representing twenty-three libraries and 252 middle school aged children participated in this year's competition. This is the first time the Grand Island Memorial Library has fielded the winning team.
Throughout the summer Grand Island's team has met every Wednesday afternoon in the Library to practice for this competition. Not only were they required to have read a book each week, the participants had to make up questions to quiz each other. Coach Marie Volpe also quizzed the team with additional questions.
Books read for this year's competition included Surviving the Applewhites, Artemis Fowl, Singing Down the Moon, City of Ember, The Shadow Club Rising, and Hoot. Books chosen were selected earlier in the year by a committee of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library librarians. Questions used for the Battle of the Books competition were also made up by the B&ECPL committee.
This year's competition was extremely close with three teams tying, (Grand Island, Eden and Clarence) scoring 70 out of a possible 78 points. To break the tie an additional three-minute playoff round was held, eliminating Clarence. Grand Island won the championship, defeating the Eden Library in the lightening round.
Grand Island's winning team consisted of the following competitors: Dallas Broady, Chris Brownschidle, Michael Chauby, James Cooke, Tim Dyet, Kearney Erhard, Emma Henderson, Taylor Kaufman, Haroon Khawar, Brendan Stone, Meredith Stone, and Alyssa Yaeger. They were coached by Marie Volpe and Anne Slater. Also assisting were the following students who were past competitors on previous teams: Rachel Bailey, Monique D'Hand, Toni Kaufman, Jennifer Lombardo, Rachel Lombardo and Kacey White.
Each member of the winning team was awarded a trophy, 1st place certificate, Media Play gift card and a movie pass. A plaque honoring the Grand Island Memorial Library's team will soon be on display at the library.
