Grand Island's Memorial Day Service Draws Large Crowd Despite Rain - 2004
Memorial Day Services Monday, May 31, 2004 were moved to the DeGlopper VFW #9249 Post Pavilion due to heavy rain. A large crowd of residents attended despite the inclement weather.
Town Supervisor Peter A. McMahon, speaking at the Memorial Day 2004 service, began his welcome speech by reading a poem titled "Freedom Is Not Free," author unknown. Supervisor McMahon told the large crowd of a young man, Marine Cpl. Jason Dunham, of Scio, NY, who made the heroic effort to protect the other members of his patrol, by covering a live grenade with his own helmet and then covering the helmet with his flak jacketed body. The Marine Corporal died on April 22, 2004 in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.
"A young man who succeeded in protecting his comrades but who gave his life doing so." Supervisor McMahon said.
"A young man, who grew up not very far away from here. A 22-year-old who had his whole life in front of him. A hero whose actions have earned him a nomination for the Congressional Medal of Honor. A young man who died protecting his fellow soldiers and serving this country. That's what Memorial Day is all about. Freedom isn't free," the Supervisor said Editor's note: The following overview of the service has been submitted by Council Member Mary S. Cooke.
"Grand Island's Memorial Day Service was especially poignant this year with thoughts of US troops fighting for our freedom and liberty as we stood for a few moments to remember their efforts and sacrifices. Jason Dunham, a soldier from Scio, NY has been nominated for the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Military's highest honor, which is the Medal awarded to Grand Islander Charles N. DeGlopper 60 years ago for his supreme sacrifice in France during WWII. As we stood in the pavilion of the VFW Post named in Charles DeGlopper's honor, it was very easy to relate to what at other times could seem like long ago and far away events.
The current war on terrorism makes the Memorial Day Service an even more necessary and important part of the holiday weekend. It was gratifying to have such a large crowd in attendance. The Wind Ensemble added so much with their patriotic musical selections. I was honored and privileged to be there and am thankful that Grand Island gets together as a town for this Memorial Day service."
Guest speaker for the day was Michael J. Owen, a United States Navy journalist, currently working as the Public Affairs Officer for Navy Recruiting District Buffalo, covering NYS and western Connecticut. As a Navy journalist, Mike served as military editor for five command publications, including a tour with the newspaper, "Pacific Stars And Stripes" in Tokyo, Japan. He also served as a broadcaster overseas with the Armed Forces Radio and Television Services. Mike is a new resident of Grand Island.

The Town sponsored BBC concert Tuesday (July 29, 2003) under a sunny sky drew one of the largest crowds since the free, weekly concerts began in 1980. A chicken BBQ fundraiser, hosted by the Grand Island High School Soccer and J. V. Lacrosse Leagues added to the crowd's enjoyment on this warm summer evening at the Town Commons. The sports teams raised $2,000 for a new scoreboard.
The BBC had the entire audience in the palm of their hand, from their 7 p.m. beginning until nearly 9 p.m. They captured the listeners, some up on their feet dancing much of the time, with such favorites as "All Your Lovin', She Loves You, Till There Was You, Tell Me Why, Nowhere Man, We Can Work It Out, Penny Lane, Lady Madonna" and "Twist and Shout."
This extremely talented group of musicians played straight through - no breaks - just song after favorite song. They are scheduled to play at the Tralf in Buffalo on February 7, 2004.
The BBC band's roster follows:
Gary Astridge (Grand Island) Drums, Band founder & group leader
John Connelly (East Amherst) Lead vocals, guitar
Bruce Lucsok (Wheatfield) Lead vocals, guitar
Russ Thomas (Cheektowaga) Lead vocals, guitar
Don Daly (Orchard Park) Lead guitar
Mike Basara (Grand Island) Vocals, percussion
Frank Maracle (Niagara Falls) Keyboard
Special guest: Christopher Daly (Orchard Park) Trumpet

The Town Recreation Department's Easter Egg Hunt was held Saturday morning (March 23, 2002) in
conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce and Tops Market on the grounds of
Tops. The weather was cold but that did not stop the kids from showing up
for a good time. Youngest children hunted close to the building in a pile of
hay and the older ones were out in the open. Zillions of eggs in all colors were found along with some with stickers and numbers inside. Those were the big winners. However, all of the eggs had candy inside so everyone was a winner. The big winners collected baskets with stuffed animals,
candy and all sorts of goodies inside. Hot chocolate and cookies, compliments of Tops Market, were
available in the play area inside, after the hunt. The photo includes the winners, the Mystery Bunny as well and one of the
managers from Tops and Recreation Director Linda Tufillaro.

Three groups combined their efforts to stage one huge
Easter Egg Hunt. The Town Recreation Department moved their hunt from
Veterans Park to Tops Parking Lot. The Chamber of Commerce, who provides top
prizes for that hunt, and Tops, with their facility, resources and prizes for
all, combined efforts to present a top hunt. Rain did not spoil the fun!
Hay piles were substituted for mud and wet grounds;
youngsters and, especially, their parents were faced with much less mess and
little or no cleanup. The youngsters were well rewarded for their efforts in locating the hidden eggs, which were stuffed with candy as well as
the winning numbers. The plastic bags given to each hunter also contained candy. There were five age groups for the event: 3 and under, 4-5,
6-7, 8-9, and 10-11. A few Tops customers were inconvenienced briefly
while the winners had their pictures taken, but most everyone went home happy.
The Town Recration Department's Snow Sculpture 2001 contest winners are Jeff, Greg and Eric Beacher who created their winning entry, "WWII Bomber" from plenty of Grand Island snow.

Please visit our website G-I-Together.ORG and fill out our SURVEY. Every group on Grand Island will have its own FREE web page showing: meeting times and location, contact persons, your Mission Statement and a listing of events. We will also be linking your news events that appear in the local media and on IsledeGrande.Com, Grand Island's E-News Source, to your page, maintaining an archived journal of pictures and news. This is the perfect opportunity for your group to connect with potential new members and the community.
