Mrs. Karmazin was a recent a presenter in the New Principal's Series, a WNY Educational Service Council. High School math teacher Mike Grosso gave a presentation on the district Math Mentors Program. This program is targeted to help elementary school teachers with the seemingly always new math curriculum. The 2007-2008 mentors are Marge Benevento and Lani Black (Sidway), Jenn Kropidlowski and Amy McMann (Huth), Janice Ahne and Carolyn Chauby (Kaegebein) and Sarah Bifaro (Connor Middle School). The mentors are the "go to" people when a teacher is looking for information regarding the required math program. The mentors receive a $500 mini grant to use for module planning, a minimum of 4 days per year of release time to work with other teachers, and paid attendance at summer conferences. The mentors must commit to two years of participation and work with 2-4 protégés each year. Some of the projects completed in the past include researching everyday math games online for teachers to work with students in their classrooms. Lists of critical math vocabulary needed before advancing to the next level, pre-made lessons using Geometers Sketchpad, which is used with the Smart Board technology. The mentors also provide leadership in the scoring of NYS math testing.
Secretary to the District Athletic Director, Kathy Tim, was recognized for starting a program of collecting obsolete sports equipment from the schools and sending it to the Ft. Drum Army Base for use by students.
Superintendent Robert Christmann spoke for high school DECA leader Cheryl Chamberlain about the upcoming Grand Island hosted DECA Regional Conference to be held at the Holiday Inn Grand Island on January 13, 2007. The DECA sponsored 2008 Job Search Program is scheduled for February 14th and all high school juniors and seniors are encouraged to attend.
   Curriculum
Under Curriculum, Asst. Superintendent Karmazin and Director of Technology Molly Talty recently attended the NYSCATE 2007 Annual Conference in New York City. The Regents of NYS is evaluating a proposed NYS Professional Development Standard for teachers. Grand Island High School planners and ECCC are looking into other classes for college credit, possibly including the Community Education program. There are currently 13 Advanced Placement courses available. The recent staff development day was a success and included technology training at Kaegebein and Everyday Math at Connor Middle School.
   Business & Finance
Assistant Superintendent Lorraine Ingrasci described the major impact items in the Budget for 2008-2009. They are salaries, retirements and health insurance benefits which are expected to rise by at least 15%.
   Superintendent's Report
Superintendent Christmann reported that the "One Island, One Team" committee is working to bring better awareness to students and the community about the drug and alcohol situation. Everyone is welcome to attend the meetings.
Under the Athletic Eligibility Code of Conduct, any infraction that occurs will stay on record throughout the student's school district career.
The Corporate Challenge is scheduled for March 2008 and Mr. Christmann hopes that there would be an increase in teams participating.
The administration has concerns about the online behavior of students, and a Myspace.com Action Plan is being formed. Some students cross the line of propriety, which is not acceptable, and the students' grievances are brought into school and can get physical. This is becoming a serious problem in middle school and high school and students will be disciplined for harassment.
The Town of Grand Island Inauguration Ceremony is scheduled for January 1st at Sidway School and students will be on hand at the event to play music.
   Board President/BOE/Correspondence
MSRA follow up: A List of things to do to stop the spread of MRSA will be posted in the schools.

    School Board Report - November 19, 2007

    By Jodi Robinson

School Board members present: Myrna Blair, Richard Little Jr., Glenn Bobeck, Tom Franz, George Casey, James Hanna, Superintendent Robert Christmann
    Absent: Neil Seaman

Monday, November 19, 2007 . . .The school board met at Sidway Elementary and a tour of the building was given prior to the meeting. First grade students were on hand to report on a research project that was completed recently. All district students are given three research projects per year. The first grade students of Karolyn Ivancie and Renee Luzi became interested in what pilgrim children did with their time. Did they work all the time? Did they have time for play? After spending time in the library on the internet, they found answers to their questions. With help from phys ed teacher Jennifer Marsala, they learned a game that the pilgrims played and did a story board about their project.
In other good news, high school teachers Cheryl Chamberlain and Carl Koppman introduced the board to Dustin Coryn who attended the National Youth Leadership Forum on National Security this past summer in Washington D.C. Supervisor for Transportation Jack Burns attended a conference held by the Western New York Association of School Business Officials. Middle school Assistant Principal Carl Guidotti and Teaching Assistant Mary Howard were acknowledged for recently attending a conference on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports which has had great success in the school district.
Island resident R.J. Wynne spoke in the Voice of the People segment, urging school officials to allow home schooled children to participate in extra-curricular activities. Bryce Shipman, who will be moving to the Island in May 2008, also encouraged the board to allow home schooled children access to activities. Superintendent Christmann asked for 30-45 days to research what other school districts are doing regarding this matter.
The board accepted the resignation of middle school teacher Michael Zuch with the effective date of September 4, 2007. Independent auditor John Schiavonne reported on the recent audit of the school district completed on October 23, 2007. In a brief summarization, Mr. Schiavone categorized the district as a low risk auditee and is in "good shape".
The board recommended amending the low bid for the Huth Road school playground as it did not match specifications. The second lowest bid was accepted.
Superintendent Christmann began his report with the January 2008 High School Regents Week schedule. This year the 20-week classes instructional exams and mid terms will be scheduled along with regents exams. After recent vandalism to the high school athletic fields by off road vehicles, Mr. Christmann reported that parents will be billed for damages and off-duty sheriff's deputies will be patrolling the grounds on ATV's and snowmobiles.
The Superintendent also noted the following:
    • Appreciation given for the Grand Island Rotary Club and its Student of the Month Program.
    • NYS Board of Regents recommended a proposed budget increase for school aid which the lawmakers in Albany must vote upon. Grand Island has placed second to Lockport in the NFL Sports Supremacy Award by 1/2 point. Third place behind GI went to Kenmore West.
    • The Directory Information Parental Opt-Out program caused much confusion this fall and is being reworked for the next school year.
    • The "Kid's Vote" results mirrored the adult vote for Supervisor McMahon and GI was third highest in votes cast for Western New York. Only Niagara Falls and Frontier had more and they are much larger school systems.
    • The Junior Job Search program for middle school 8th grade was a success. The full day program benefited both the high school interviewers and middle school interviewees.
    • Tuesday, November 20 is SRP Recognition Day and Mr. Christmann acknowledged its efforts.

School District Addresses Alleged Drinking at Teen Party - 2007
19 Grand Island Athletes Violate Athletic Agreement.

Grand Island School District Press Release - OCTOBER 5, 2007 . . Public school districts across the state have as their highest priority the safety of their students. Rules and regulations are created to assist students in their decision making process as regards their possible participation in inappropriate activities that might compromise their safety. The rules exist to protect and prevent rather than punish. They are in place to give students an added ability to say no to their peers who try to get them to join in their poor choices.
With that as a background, a birthday party was held on Grand Island on Saturday, September 29 which started with a group of about 15 high school invitees. Over the course of the evening the party grew to approximately 150 students who attended at least six different high schools. Parents were present other than during a brief period in which one had left to pick up take out food. The police were called and broke up the party. No arrests were made.
In July 2007 a revised Grand Island High School/Middle School Athletic Agreement was approved. Among the changes from the previous regulations, students are now subject to the training rules year round. In other words, inappropriate summer behavior could affect future athletic eligibility. A second change states that when a student knows/is aware of illegal substances such as alcohol are being use at a social event, the athlete must leave the site “immediately.” This, too, was created as a way to protect our students from peer pressure that could possibly put their safety at risk.
After a thorough and time consuming investigation assisted by the high school administrators and coaches, Director of Athletics Jon Roth determined that a total of 19 Grand Island athletes violated the Athletic Agreement. Several different fall sports teams are affected. Those athletes who committed their first (and hopefully last) offense will lose approximately 20% of their Fall 2007 season. As some seasons are longer than others, the number of contests varies from 1-3 games. Appeals may be directed to a five member Athletic Board which will review the case and make a determination. Unless there is an appeal notice, the suspensions will begin on October 5 and if there is more than a one-game suspension, the games will be served consecutively.
The school district urges that parents take a very active and vigilant response to knowing where their children are and what they are doing. Every parent would be devastated to be told that their child was a tragic victim of an alcohol related death such as occurred to three local high school students last weekend. Parents must continue to make it clear to their children that when it comes to the use of illegal substances such as alcohol, there can only be right and wrong. The Grand Island Central School District joins with our parents and community in doing everything we can do to keep our children safe. Sometimes that means saying no and making unpopular decisions. Our children are too important to all of us to lose.

School District Investigating Alleged Drinking Party Involving Island High School Students - 2007

A Saturday night party in the Sandy Beach area of Grand Island is the subject of criticism and rumors. The Erie County Sheriff's Department broke up what has been referred to as a birthday party around 9 p.m. Saturday, September 29, 2007. However, no arrests were made. Superintendent Robert Christmann, who had been out of town for a two-day NYS Superintendent Conference in Albany, was working with High School Principal Sandra Anzalone, Assistant Principal Chris Swiatek and Director of Interscholastic Athletics Jon Roth to learn more about the allegations of a party in which alcohol was available and at which there were allegedly students from 4-5 school districts. A press release will be posted as soon as the school district completes its investigation.

    School Board Report - September 24, 2007

    By Jodi Robinson

School Board members present: Neil Seaman, Myrna Blair, Tom Franz, George Casey, James Hanna, Superintendent Robert Christmann
absent: Richard Little Jr., Glenn Bobeck

Monday, September 24, 2007 . . .Recognition was given to several staff members who participated in the United Way Day of Caring. A Buffalo News article published on September 6, 2007 was recognized as having a positive reflection of our school district. An individual homeowner and a builder, mentioned in the News story that the school district is a good selling point. The 2006-2007 high school yearbook was given an award for local cover design by Lifetouch Photography.
Director of Instructional Technology Molly Marren has been appointed to the Town Cable and Communications Committee.
Assistant Principal Chris Swiatek announced that a bonfire event is being re-introduced to the Homecoming festivities in early October. The Thursday, October 11th event will consist of a bonfire and a junior/senior powder puff football game under the lights. The times announced are from approximately 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Blue & White Day is scheduled for Friday with a pep rally in the afternoon. The Vikings football games and Homecoming dance on Saturday round out the weekend's activities.
Under Curriculum, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum/Instruction Dr. Karen Karmazin noted that a informational newsletter, Tech Talk, is being sent to all teachers in the district. An Eco Island in-service will promote more teachers' use of the Eco Island site.
Business & Finance Assistant Superintendent for Finances and Support Services Lorraine Ingrasci mentioned a 20-year warranty on the middle school roof project. The roofing project at the bus garage has begun and should be completed in a couple of weeks. A problem with flashing on the roof has added an additional $2000 to the estimate. The emergency generator project is out for bid and they are expected to be available at Christmas time. For the future, an RFP for architects is being put together. Mrs. Ingrasci also spoke of PMA Insurance that tracks problems in the workplace. In the district, workers comp gets the most claims with slips and falls in the kitchen. A pair of non-slip shoes are available for $24 per pair, and if the shoes are issued or required, insurance rates would drop.
Mike Neumeister of Capital Market Advisors spoke of future capital project funding and a schedule that would lay out indebtedness. A large issue with the Grand Island District is that debt service runs through 2017-2018. The status of the current project approved in December of 2006 is that Excel pays it in entirety which makes the project essentially free. In discussion, the assumption is that on a projected capital project of $1,000,000, the district strives for 100% aid but likely gets 95%, with a 4% interest rate. The projected tax rate impact on taxpayers is $.03/$1,000 of assessed value.
Superintendent Robert Christmann reported that he is serving on the Grand Island Economic Development Advisory Board (GIEDAB) and a large business roundtable is scheduled for October 10th regarding how the school district impacts economic growth. A transportation study is being conducted by a unbiased, professional consultant. The report is expected by January 2008, before the 2008/2009 budget is planned. A draft of acceptable use regulations and procedures is being comprised with the intent of making a set policy. The recently sent home student photo opt-out form caused a bit of confusion but in the end 80 students district wide are on the list. Most of the students are either in Sidway or the high school, with numerous children (3-5) from individual families. A new immunization law for 6th graders has caused some trouble in the last few weeks. Eleven students are on the un-immunized list, down from 40 last week. Five to six notices have been sent home with these students who will be home instructed as of Monday, October 1st if they do not comply. The Career and Technical Ed enrollments of juniors and seniors are listed as 89 participants, down from the projected 100+. Elementary enrollments were reported as Sidway: increase in kindergarten, decrease in first; Huth Road: decrease in second, slight increase in third and fourth and decrease in fifth; Kaegebein: decrease in second, increase in third, decrease in fourth and slight increase in fifth. In a cost saving measure, the Community Ed and District Newsletter will be mailed together in January.

    School Board Report - September 10, 2007

    By Jodi Robinson

School Board members present: Richard Little Jr., Neil Seaman, Myrna Blair, Glenn Bobeck, Tom Franz, George Casey, James Hanna, Superintendent Robert Christmann
Monday, September 10, 2007 . . .The school board meeting was held at Eco Island on Staley Road and began with Sidway teacher and Eco Island Director Dianne Tiede giving an update on recent projects. Sidway teachers aid Charlene Burchfield was thanked for her work with 1st and 2nd grade students at the center this summer. Recently developed by Mrs. Tiede, the "Food Chains" exhibit consists of 16 different food chain puzzles made up of interlocking wood puzzle pieces. The puzzles begin with the sun and end with death and dying. Other pieces were made so students can create their own food chains. Donn Perry, head of school district maintenance and grounds, was thanked for his participation, with special thanks to employee Keith Dodge for cutting all the pieces of wood.
Grand Island High School Junior Lauren Priest was selected to participate in the People to People Student Ambassador Program, a prestigious honor. Lauren spent twenty days touring western Europe this past summer. Current 1st grade Sidway student Natalie Turck was recognized by the school board for winning an honorable mention at the NEA Art Show, a national award.
The Universal Pre-Kindergarten program is going well with 42 students enrolled. New assistant High School Principal A. R. Arroyo reported on the 2007 summer school program as successful. A number of employees were mentioned as being noteworthy for their efforts including SRP Mrs. Jane Greer as summer school office manager. resource room head proctor and summer school substitute Mrs. Cheryl Chamberlain, summer school, nurse Mrs. Cindy Kaiser, summer school administrative intern Mr. Christopher Garden (Principal at St. Paul's School in Tonawanda), guidance office secretary Mrs. Joan Portik and hall monitor Mrs. Billy Jean Harper. "The students were truly outstanding this summer!" Mr. Arroyo said. A few recommendations from Mr. Arroyo included requiring summer school students' grades from the 3rd and 4th marking period be included in the summer school grade and considering the hiring of a special education certified employee for the last two weeks of summer school.
The middle school roof project should be complete Friday (9-14-07) as the contractors have applied the hot cap sheet. The bus garage roofing project began Monday, September 10th. Bids for generators will be accepted until October 4th at 2 p.m.
Superintendent Robert Christmann reported on first day school enrollments, noting that class sizes were running around 25 students in the elementary grades and 21 students in Sidway. The fifth grade classes are a bit higher. The town is looking into a NYS Shared Municipal Services Incentive grant that would be shared with the school district. A transportation study is being considered to work closely with the town. A traffic light at the corner of Ransom and Stony Point was mentioned, as 90% of traffic leaving the complex at 1100 Ransom heads out to Stony Point. A sign will be installed at the high school listing all of the district schools. An outside interest will be putting the sign up as the cost was 1/2 of estimated cost for district installation. Student fundraising was brought up regarding safety issues and procedures. In the future Superintendent Christmann would like to simplify the student classroom supply lists having the teachers fine tune and work towards consistency. The Huth Road playground project is waiting for some paperwork from the state before bidding out the equipment and installation to take place next spring.
Trustee George Casey mentioned he is in his 38th year of watching Grand Island Varsity Soccer. Trustee Tom Franz noted that thanks to the quick response recently from Grand Island students skate boarding near Huth Road School, a grass fire was put out without much damage. Letters of acknowledgement will be sent to the students by the school board.

    School Board Report - August 20, 2007

    By Jodi Robinson

School Board members present: Richard Little Jr., Neil Seaman, Myrna Blair, Glenn Bobeck, Tom Franz, Superintendent Robert Christmann
Board members not present: George Casey, James Hanna
Monday, August 20, 2007 . . .The school board meeting began with mention of a complimentary letter received by Huth Road School from the parent of a new student who experienced a great transition from another school. Town workers were thanked for helping out all the schools on August 15th, the National Day of Caring. An upright piano was recently donated to the school district. The new teacher orientation held recently included a section on the history of Grand Island. Mr. Dick Gehring of Trautman & Associates gave an update on the 2007 Capital Improvement Project. The project was broken up into four "packages." The $1.65 million roofing package is 80% complete and is on track to begin the Transportation building phase in the next 2-3 weeks. Roof cants were added to the middle school at a cost of $15,000 but the 1/2 million dollar savings from the original estimate covered it. The second package of the 2007 project is the purchase of four emergency generators at a cost of $317,000. A portion of the money for the generators is to be funded by the surplus. The third package is a new district wide phone system that will be out for bid by November and completed in the summer of 2008. The fourth package in the project is to address masonry repairs in all the district buildings.
The State Education Department requires that a Building Condition Survey be made and updated yearly as to check the progress of items noted. Looking at each facility plan, if unsatisfactory items appear, a dollar amount will be assigned, looking ahead to when problems will be addressed. The building principals will be asked to check with staff and come up with a "wish list" for the future.
Superintendent Robert Christmann mentioned in his report that the custodial/maintenance staff attended sexual harassment training last week. The Grand Island Town Board has assigned three places on the Economic Development Advisory Board to the school board. President Richard Little Jr. will serve a term that ends in '08 while Superintendent Christmann's term ends in '09 and board member Glenn Bobeck will serve until 2010. A Transportation Study/Starting Times will begin in the fall and will study all aspects concerning the secondary schools. Middle school parent supply lists have reflected to be 80% in common. In the future, a single list for all grades/teams will apply.
Health insurance cost increases are tentatively estimated to be over 1/4 of a million dollars more than budgeted by a state enacted mandate, none of which is covered by state funds. In the past, parents were required to sign photo permission forms each year for their child. The new policy requires the parents to "opt out" if they wish to prohibit their child's photo from being used. Member Neil Seaman brought attention to the new school calendar and assigned vacation days and the January break for high school students for Regent's Exams. School Board Report - July 30, 2007

    By Jodi Robinson

School Board members present: Richard Little Jr., Neil Seaman, Myrna Blair, George Casey, Tom Franz, Superintendent Robert Christmann
Board members not present: Glenn Bobeck
Monday, July 30, 2007 . . .The meeting began with the Voice of the People segment at which time Jim Mulcahy questioned the out-of-town fieldtrip listed under "Curriculum" in the agenda. The high school cross country fieldtrip is on October 7, 2007 and is to New Bedford, MA. Mr. Mulcahy stated that this was not curriculum but an extra curricular activity and should not be paid for by the taxpayers. Superintendent Robert Christmann stated that the district would be paying the $160.00 entrance fee and all other costs were being paid by the participants. Mr. Mulcahy also mentioned the capital budget and that he would like an accounting of how much money was spent and how much was received of "free money" from the state.
Under Business & Finance, Asst. Superintendent for Finance Loraine Ingrasci reported on the capital project construction at the Connor Middle School. The roofing project is on schedule and should be done by September 1st. The bus garage repairs will be started after the middle school is completed and is scheduled to be finished by mid-October. A planned high school roofing project is waiting for warranty information before the construction can begin.
Superintendent Christmann announced that a sign will be erected on the high school acknowledging that the district is "One of the Most Outstanding School Districts" with all schools listed. An organizational chart was developed noting that each of the five school building principals are being given greater responsibility/authority of their schools and that they are the immediate supervisor of all employees in the building.
A change in athletic regulations for students was announced. Starting this fall, a "three strikes you're out" policy will be followed. Each student-athlete will be required to sign an agreement each season stating that he/she will not attend any event where unlawful use of alcohol or any use of drugs is taking place and will leave immediately if this occurs. Unbecoming behavior of student-athletes in or out of school is to be reported to the athletic director immediately. The time frame is grade 7 through the last day of grade 8 and grade 9 through the last day of grade 12, summers included. After three occurrences the athlete will be suspended from athletics for a full year. A hearing procedure with a right to appeal will be in effect.
A new policy on taking student photos for printed material or web is being introduced this fall. In the past, every student's parent was asked to sign a permission form allowing their child's picture to be used. Parents will now have an opt-out option with the assumption that all children are permitted to have photos taken.
An upcoming audit requires that the district payroll be certified. Due to backlog problems with Erie County, this has yet to happen. The district payroll clerk has been working on this since 2001 and has asked for help from Assemblyman Sam Hoyt in the matter.
Superintendent Christmann asked that a district bus tour of buildings be considered as opposed to going to different buildings before school board meetings. The school board likes the current set-up. The state has approved the Pre-K program grant and 42 students have been selected through a lottery to attend. The schools involved are Care-A-Lot, Stay To Play, Wood's Creek and St. Stephen's.

    Joint Town Board/School Board Meeting - July 30, 2007

    By Jodi Robinson

Town Board members present: Mary Cooke, Gary Roesch, Supervisor Peter McMahon
Board members not present: Richard Crawford, Sue Argy
School Board members present: Richard Little Jr., Neil Seaman, Myrna Blair, George Casey, Tom Franz, Superintendent Robert Christmann
Board members not present: Glenn Bobeck
Monday, July 30, 2007 . . .The joint meeting began with an update on the request by the school board for the use of Veteran's Park for the first two JV Football games in September. The decision will have to wait until the schedule of the Junior Vikings is finalized. The district would like to avoid using the high school football field to allow an extra two weeks for turf growth. The project was on hold until after the Relay For Life was held in early June. Due to an upcoming audit for the school system, the school board has requested documentation of the procedure to collect school taxes. Town Clerk Pattie Frentzel will be addressing this issue for the town.
Councilman Gary Roesch reported that he has been meeting with representatives of Time-Warner Cable and in discussion are upgrades and cost sharing. The school would like to have a dedicated educational program channel for all the schools. The town was looking for funding for a feasibility study for sharing buildings & grounds and transportation departments with the school district. The state turned down the funding for the study and there is talk of asking for funds for the implementation of a sharing program as opposed to a study. Also in discussion was the possibility of sharing health insurance and liability insurance between the town and the schools, health insurance premiums would be raised for both at this time. The liability inquiry is not complete.
Supervisor Peter McMahon passed out maps of the island that showed the location of town land and school district land that will be used in the future. Councilwoman Mary Cooke updated the History Channel grant application that was turned down recently, and noted that the History Channel will be sending feedback on the application. One of the topics in the grant was "Grand Island, Playground of Western New York in the 1800's". An AP History class from the high school was going to be involved in collecting information and using blogs and podcasts to deliver the information.
The drug and alcohol awareness initiative "One Island-One Team-Drug Free" was said to be coming together through the work of many individuals. Sandra Anzalone, Principal of Grand Island High School, and Bruce Benson, Principal of Connor Middle School, were thanked for putting in much effort to get the initiative into the upcoming orientation for new students. Information from the awareness initiative will be available at National Nite Out which will take place on Tuesday, August 7th from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the Town Commons. National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention; generate support and participation in local anticrime programs; strengthen spirit and police-community partnerships and to let criminals know that our neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
The school board was invited to have a seat on the Grand Island Economic Development Advisory Board which is working with the larger companies of Grand Island in looking at future development. Gary Roesch mentioned that a WiFi wireless grant was obtained through the town and the town triangle will be the first wired. Mary Cooke reported that an extension was approved for the future convenience store/gas pumps at the corner of Stony Point and Ransom roads as opposed to tearing down the building. The lot across the street has been obtained as a group home.
The next joint school/town board meeting is scheduled for October 29, 2007.

In business & finance, it was announced that the middle school roofing project has begun. The athletic fields behind the high school/middle school complex are being aerated and seeded and should be in good shape by the start of school. A drainage problem exists with the high school and middle school cafeteria grease traps. The high school fix is estimated to be at just over $1000, while the middle school problem is much more complicated with an estimate of $12,000. The high school science lab has $75,000 for improvements from the project fund. There is only one lab and three are needed. The problem will be looked into to find the best solution.
The superintendent's report reviewed the off-island student enrollment data, including 460 eligible students who are not in district schools. In personnel planning, all school principals are looking at their enrollment to see that they are staffed accordingly. School Superintendent Robert Christmann is Honored for Innovation and Excellence in School Governance - 2007

    Robert Christmann
Grand Island School Superintendent, Mr. Robert Christmann, was recently honored when his former employer, Newark Central School District (Newark, New York), was chosen as National Grand Prize Winner of the American School Board Journal’s 2007 Magna Awards.
The prestigious Magna Awards recognize leadership from school districts nationwide for their innovation and excellence in school governance. Entries are divided into three categories based on enrollment: under 5,000; 5,000 to 20,000; and over 20,000. Each category has one grand prize winner and five additional winners from each category. There are also 15 districts who earned honorable mentions. Newark Central School District won the $3,500 Magna Award in the less than 5,000 student enrollment category for “Board Linkage Meetings to Foster School Improvement”.
Since summer of 2000, the Newark Board of Education began holding linkage meetings in hopes to more effectively communicate with every school and community segment it serves. The Board meets with various groups including current and former students, teachers, staff, realtors, business and industry representatives, clergy members, reporters, and others - all with the purpose to seek additional input on ways to enhance district programs and better serve students. The linkages have proven to be productive “give and take sessions” where many ideas, that otherwise may not have been suggested, have spawned and ultimately been implemented into the educational program. Mr. Christmann recalls one such example from a linkage meeting several years ago. Recent high school graduates told board members that their high school computer technology courses had not prepared them for college – those classes were redesigned. “Bottom line is that the linkage process has translated into changes for students. It has improved academics,” Christmann said. For over 13 years, the American School Board Journal’s Magna Awards have rewarded highly innovative thinkers in school districts who grapple with the complex challenges in public education on a daily basis,” said Marilee Rist, ASBJ’s Publisher and Assistant Executive Director of the National School Boards Association (NSBA). “This year’s entries showcase excellent examples of school boards, superintendents, and staff who’ve focused on the common threads of community, collaboration, and partnership to advance student learning.” The 2007 winners are highlighted in a special supplement to the April issue of American School Board Journal.
Robert W. Christmann has been serving as Grand Island School Superintendent since February 2007. Christmann came to Grand Island after being employed as Superintendent of Newark School District located in Wayne County, NY. He was appointed to this position in 1991 following four years as Newark Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. Newark School District encompasses five schools with enrollment of 2500 students.

Hundreds of students, family members, teachers and art lovers of all sorts turned out to honor the artistic accomplishments of some of Grand Island’s finest young artists this past Monday evening when the K-8 Art Department of the Grand Island Schools presented its annual show: Art Inspired by 1000 Words.
Throughout the school year, students enrolled in grades K-8 have been creating works in their art classes to this year’s theme. Ceramics, altered books, photography, tessellations, paintings, drawings and sculpture turned the foyer of the high school Viking Mall into a gallery-like setting in celebration of the arts. The various forms of creative problem solving and self-expression visually demonstrated the ways in which district students are meeting the rigorous New York State Standards for the Visual Arts in their art classes. As many of the pieces included in the display were based on poetry, stories, mythology and quotations, several standards from the English Language Arts curriculum were met as well. The display visually demonstrated the higher-order thinking skills abundant throughout the art curriculum and featured the creativity and artistic skill of students between the ages of 5 and 14.
The show will remain on display during the week of May 14th, and the public is cordially invited to view it during that time. Participating are students of teachers: Theresa Barnack, Sidway School; Alexann Incao, Kaegebein Elementary; Peter Sloan, Huth Rd., Andrew Dulak and Nora Klein, Connor Middle School.

Emergency Evacuation Drill at GIHS, Connor Middle - 2007

The students and staff of Grand Island Senior High School and Veronica Connor Middle School will participate in an emergency evacuation drill on Friday, May 18, 2007 to evaluate the effectiveness of procedures used during a real evacuation.
The drill will begin at approximately 12:30 p.m. when students will be evacuated from the campus to sheltering locations. Grand Island Central School District officials have coordinated this drill with the Town of Grand Island and Emergency Services. Students will return to their respective classrooms at the conclusion of the exercise.
In preparation for the drill, students will be informed of the exercise to ensure no one is alarmed or upset by the day’s activity. Signs will be posted in the vicinity of the school indicating that a drill is in progress. The intent of the signs is to prevent any undue concern or confusion regarding the drill.        "The primary concern of Grand Island Central School District and the Town of Grand Island/Emergency Services is the safety of our children," a district spokesman said. "Emergency drills ensure our staff is prepared in the event of an actual situation and a crucial element of an effective plan is to practice the plan," she said. After a show at Villa Maria College, the print will be on display at the high school. The Grand Island UNICEF program was awarded a certificate of achievement for its efforts last fall.        Superintendent Robert Christmann started his report with an update on the 4th grade historic Grand Island field trip. There is a request of the Education Foundation to fund the Kaegebein portion of transportation as Huth Road school is covered by an anonymous donor. Mr. Christman noted that in the future any donations of any kind will be shared between both elementary schools for equal opportunity. The Veronica Connor Middle School was commended for beating its goal in the Bald For Bucks, Roswell Park fundraiser. Over $10,200 was raised, more per participant than any other school.
The Pride of The Island Awardees announced recently will be sent a letter of commendation from the Superintendent and school board members. The YWCA will be running a full day summer program at Grand Island High School for ten weeks this summer.
A newsletter is being printed and will be sent out soon with information regarding the upcoming budget. Board of Education Notice Of Special Meeting - Wednesday, April 4, 2007

The Board of Education will meet today (Wednesday, April 4, 2007) at 6:00 p.m. in the District Office Board Conference Room. There is one agenda item only. "It is to increase the proposed budget by an amount equal to the increase that we just learned is in the state budget for UPK services," Schools Superintendent Robert W. Christmann said on the morning of April 4th. While the budget will go up by $49,033, the revenue from the new state aid to cover this will go up the same $49,033, he said. There will be no impact whatsoever on the projected tax rate, he said.
"With some additional state aid in the final Legislative (vs. Governors) budget, we are able to project that the Grand Island School District tax rate increase for 2007-08 will be a maximum of .6% (originally it was .8%)," the Superintendent said. "We are pleased that with the additional UPK state aid we will be able to provide this free service for more Grand Island families at the preschools of their choice. It continues to be the case that the school district will not run its own UPK program for 2007-08 but will provide the funding for parents to use the services at the private preschools at no cost to the family for the half day program. Finally then, our corrected board budget figure will be $47,390,798 after the UPK adjustment is made today at 6 p.m. by the Board of Education," Mr. Christmann said.

    School Board Report - March 26, 2007

    By Jodi Robinson

Monday, March 26, 2007 . . .Many students were honored at the beginning of the school board meeting. Sidway artwork chosen for the New York State Art Teachers Association (NYSATA) Region One Teacher and Student Art Exhibition earlier in the month was on display. The students in attendance were recognized by Sidway art teacher Mrs. Theresa Barnack. The students are first graders, Steven Bachman, Thomas Cecere, Tess LaRiviere, and Thomas Thompson. Kindergarten students chosen are Anna DiBello and Trevor Samplinski. High school Scholar Athletes were also recognized from five of the eight winter sports teams. Included were boys swimming and diving, boys basketball, girls bowling, wrestling and girls basketball. Harkness students were also recognized as follows:
Harkness Career Center National Technical Honor Society Inductees:
    Krista Burzynski - Cosmetology
Lauryn Clingersmith - Early Childhood Education
Lyndsey Clingersmith - Early Childhood Education
    Karen Coughlin - Culinary Skills
Kelsey Nordvik - Early Childhood Education
    Alysse Schuster - Culinary Skills
    Shannon Tegler - Culinary Skills

    Harkness Student of the Month
    Robert Borden - Welding I
    Dan Kilian - Welding II
Richard Boss - Culinary Skills I

Also recognized was Kaegebein teacher Susan Skrabacz who was named Educator of the Week by Channel 2 news. Mrs. Marian Farrell was named as the new school nurse at Sidway Elementary.
Superintendent Robert Christmann spoke on the 3rd draft of the 2007-2008 school budget. During the next week the budget will continue to be evaluated before a Budget Forum and Adoption of the budget takes place in Connor Middle School on April 2 (see below) to see that "the budget meets the student needs" and a "conservative approach" was being used. The tax rate increase is projected to be a maximum of .8 %. The district is also in the process of getting more information on its website and out to the media regarding the interesting school activities happening every day. A grant has been accepted for additional security cameras to be placed in the high school and middle school thanks to Assemblyman Sam Hoyt. Also mentioned was NYS Gov. Spitzer's "Contract For Excellence" that will expect a higher level of accountability by the schools in order to accept state aid.
A long discussion was held regarding a pre-K program for the Grand Island District. Over $60,000 dollars is available in aid to run the program. Due to the problem of busing and costs above this grant, a committee is being formed to discuss the feasibility of using the funds to send pre-K children to existing programs located on Grand Island through a lottery system.
In the "Voice of the People" segment, Grand Island Historical Society President Curt Nestark challenged the school board to provide funds for the "4th Grade Tour" that has been enjoyed for over 15 years by students. The tour visits River Lea, Town Hall, and assorted historical sites on Grand Island each spring. Last year the society paid the $600+ cost of buses. This year an anonymous donor provided the needed funds for Huth Road Elementary students to attend, however, the other schools have not been as fortunate.
The following school board meetings have been scheduled:
  • Monday, April 2, 2007- Budget Forum, Public Welcome - Middle School Little Theater - 7 p.m. Adoption of the budget to immediately follow forum.

School Board Report - "Smartboard Technology" - February 26, 2007

    By Jodi Robinson

Monday, February 26, 2007 . . .Two Veronica Connor Middle School math teachers and some students began this week's school board meeting with a very interesting presentation on "Smartboard Technology." This math program is used by the 6th and 7th grade students and is comprised of software, content and a large screen with projector. Math teacher Miss Sarah Bifaro and teaching assistant Mrs. Mary Howard described how the program made lessons more interesting and helped with special needs issues. It also is a great time saver between classes. The students have more confidence, are more motivated, abstract concepts are more concrete and the students remain more focused. The audience was given "remote control units" and participated as the students gave a demonstration on the workings of the program. Amazing!
High school senior Cassandra Lange was mentioned as a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. A committee was formed to discuss the addition of a new preschool class that would be a half-day program. State aid would contribute to the costs. Assistant Superintendent For Finance Loraine Ingrasci reported that the preliminary figures of the 2007-2008 proposed budget are less than expected due to state aid and health insurance concessions. The major budget increases include a 15% increase in health insurance, an increase in FICA, Social Security and Workman's Comp, and a 4% increase in the BOCES program.
Superintendent Robert Christmann spoke in his report that he had visited the Job Search Seminar held by the high school recently and was very impressed with the program and the community involvement. He also attended the Relay For Life Kick-Off and was very "inspired." In the future Mr. Christmann would like to increase the quantity and quality of communication between the staff and community.
