St. Stephen’s Girls Basketball Wins Another, Now 7-0 On The Season - Dec. 2008

Not known for their early starts, St. Stephen’s Varsity Girls basketball played a Saturday morning game on Dec. 20th against DeSales of Lockport. The game was held despite the cold and snowy weather at St. Johns de LaSalle gym on Buffalo Ave. Niagara Falls.
For those who braved the weather, they were treated to a very well played game by St. Stephen’s and a 32-12 victory over the team from Lockport. Two standout players contributed to the win. Early in the game, Stephanie Neville stole the ball twice and converted the turnovers to 4 points in helping her team get on track. This sparked a defensive stand that allowed only 6 first half points by DeSales. Incredibly, St. Stephen’s did not commit a foul in the entire first half.
In the second half, Carlee Conway overcame being double teamed and dished the ball to other St. Stephen players to score points. She constantly pushed the ball into the offensive zone and found the open player. Erin McConnaghy once again led all players with 10 points as she shot five of seven from the floor. Conway finished with 7 points and numerous assists. Grace Olszewski out-rebounded the taller DeSales players and contributed with 6 points. Ashley Colan and Amanda Bruno who substitute for each other also secured numerous rebounds and scored 2 and 3 points respectively. Although not scoring points, Zaida Smith, Molly Meka and Katie White played well coming off the bench to spell the starters.
The team is off over the Christmas Holiday and returns to action on January 6th against Stella Niagara. The game is to be held at St. Stephen’s gym starting at 7:30 p.m.
In other news, St. Stephen’s is trying to work with Art Meany who coaches the Grand Island Modified team and arrange a practice game that would feature the future stars of the GI program. More on this as it develops. Happy New Year to all of our supporters and we hope to see you at our next game!

St. Stephen’s Varsity Girls Basketball Pushes Record to 6-0 - 2008

Grace Olzsewski (33) and Ashley Colon (22) work for position on offense against St. Peters of Lewiston

Averaging almost 40 points per game, the St. Stephen’s Varsity Girls Basketball Team won three more games in the past five days.
It began with an extremely lopsided win against St. Peter’s of Lewiston On Thursday, December 11th. Seven of the St. Stephen’s players contributed with points as they won 58-9. Erin McConnaghy led all players with 20 points while Grace Olszewski and Carlee Conway each had 10. Molly Meka had her strongest game of the season with 8 points while Ashley Colon added 7 points.Zaida Smith and Amanda Bruno rounded out the scoring with 2 and 1 point respectively. Although held off the score sheet, Stephanie Neville and Katie White forced numerous turnovers on the defensive side of the ball.
Saturday December 13th saw St. Stephen’s take on North Tonawanda Catholic (NTC) at Niagara Catholic High School. Balanced scoring was again evident as seven players contributed. Katie White had a career high 4 points and Stephanie Neville had the same from their usual defensive guard position. And it was strong defense that stymied NTC as they were held to only 14 points. Again Erin McConnaghy led all scorers with 11 points while Grace Olzsewski had 7 in St. Stephen’s 34-14 victory.
Monday December 15th saw a rematch with NTC, this time held at the small court at Stella Niagara’s gym. NTC came out with a very aggressive attitude, working at pressing St. Stephen’s into turnovers. For the first time this season, St. Stephen’s was behind at the end of the first quarter 6-5. But St. Stephen’s put on a defensive clinic in the second quarter, holding NTC to only one point and taking a 17-7 lead at the half. Neville and White shared time at the top defensive slot and assisted with generating numerous turnovers. Erin McConnaghy converted those transition plays into 18 points to lead all scorers. Carlee Conway contributed 11 points and Grace Olzsewski led with several offensive rebounds and 7 points. Conway was able to get the ball inside in the second half with her playmaking ability which led to inside baskets from Ashley Colon who had 4, Amanda Bruno with 2 and Zaida Smith with 2 points. St. Stephen’s won the game by a final score of 44 to 21, pushing their season record to 6-0.
In their first six games, St. Stephen’s is averaging 39 points per game while holding their opponents to an average of 12.5 points per game. It is their commitment to team defense and quick transitional play that makes them so effective. Their next game is Saturday, December 20th against DeSales from Lockport at St. John’s LaSalle gym on Buffalo Ave, Niagara Falls at 10:30 a.m.

The preseason Tip-Off Tournament for the Niagara District/Diocese of Buffalo Basketball League was held the weekend of November 22 through November 24th. The six-team league played at three different gyms with the finals being held at Niagara Catholic High School. St. Stephen’s won the tournament with a very decisive win over DeSales from Lockport, NY by a score of 32-15.
St. Stephen’s returns six players from last year’s team and added three more seventh graders to the varsity team. Although not a team with height, it does possess speed at every position and the seventh graders add depth at guard and forward.
St. Stephen’s was awarded a bye in the first round of the tournament beginning play in the semi-finals. Their first opponent was Stella Niagara in a game played at St. Stephen’s gym on Grand Island. St. Stephen’s scored its first basket by Erin McConnaghy two-seconds into the game on a tip at center by Grace Olszewski. They never looked back as Carlee Conway took over at point guard and led the team to a 35-10 win. Stephanie Neville contributed with tremendous pressure on Stella’s point guard causing numerous turnovers. McConnaghy led all scorers with 15 points followed by Conway with 8, Olszewski with 6, Ashley Colon with 4 and Neville with 2.
In the finals at Niagara Catholic High School, St. Stephen’s faced a much taller DeSales team so rebounding would be a key. Ashley Colon, Amanda Bruno and Grace Olszewski were called on to use their boxing-out skills to counter the taller DeSales players. They gathered numerous rebounds which led to a quick transition play to Carlee Conway that ultimately led to several fast-break baskets. Olszewski also had several offensive rebounds that contributed to her leading the team in points with 9. Conway had 8 points, followed by Stephanie Neville converting fast-breaks to baskets with 6 points, Erin McConnaghy with 6 points, Colon with 2 and off the bench Molly Meka had one. Zaida Smith and Katie White contributed with playing time off the bench, spelling the starters with much needed rest. St. Stephen's committed only three fouls all game enroute to the tournament win by a score of 32-15.
St Peter’s of Lewiston was their opponent December 1st to start their regular season. All nine players received considerable playing time and seven players scored points in earning a 32-6 win. Stephanie Neville and Katie White shared time at defensive guard position and created numerous turnovers. Erin McConnaghy led all scorers with 14 points, Grace Olochewski had 5, Carlee Conway had 4, Ashley Colon had 3, Amanda Bruno, Zaida Smith and Katie White each had 2. Bruno and Smith also led the team in rebounds. McConnaghy and Molly Meka played tremendous defense at the guard position. The event began with a series of holiday favorites by the students' concert band. The packed house was then treated to "ELFis and the Sleigh Riders," a short musical with a message about forgiveness. The evening concluded with the heart warming presentation of the Nativity. Many thanks to the students who shared their wonderful talents, and to all those who assisted in pulling together this excellent concert.
