Shopping Extravaganza Coming To St. Stephen School - Fall 2009
   St. Stephen School will host a Shopping Extravaganza from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, November 15 at the school, 2080 Baseline Road. Featured will be home based businesses and crafters. Call Kim Nemeth, 773-3331 or email kimneme@gmail.com for cost of display space.
    The day will also feature food, drink, fun, raffles and free admission. This will be a great opportunity for holiday shopping.

St. Stephen’s Girls Varsity Basketball Wins League Title - January 2009

   Saturday January 24th was the showdown date with the league title on the line. The 12-0 St. Stephen’s Girls basketball team tipped off against the 11-1 St. Dominic’s team from Niagara Falls. The gym at Niagara Catholic High School was the venue for what turned out to be a very physical game.
   The smaller but faster St. Stephen’s team saw the lead go back and forth three times in the first two quarters. St. Stephen’s starting center, Grace Olszewski, was in foul trouble early and was substituted by Zaida Smith. Although held off the score sheet, Smith contributed with seven defensive rebounds. The difference in the game was that St. Dominic’s also had their two best players in foul trouble throughout the third and fourth quarters. Both eventually fouled out as St. Stephen’s pulled away in the fourth quarter. St. Stephen’s held their foes to only one-point in the entire fourth quarter and won by a score of 30-22. Contributing to the final score were: Olszewski 6 pts., Carlee Conway 8 pts, Erin McConnaghy 15 pts., and Ashley Colan 1 pt. Other notable contributions were from Amanda Bruno with five rebounds and Stephanie Neville with many defensive pressures at guard. With the win, St. Stephen's secured the league championship title for the regular season and the number one seed in the league playoffs.
   St. Stephen’s hosted the second round of the league playoffs on Sunday February 1st. In the first game, St. Dominic’s dominated DeSalles from Lockport. St. Stephen’s Girls took on North Tonawanda Catholic who were playing without their best player who was nursing a broken ankle. Although close at the end of the first quarter 9-8, the game was never in question as St. Stephen’s once again exploded for 13 points in the second and a half-time lead of 22-10. The final score was 37 – 16 as the St. Stephen’s Girls had six of their nine players record points during the game. Grace Olszewski 4 pts. Carlee Conway 6 pts., Erin McConnaghy with a season high 19 pts., Stephanie Neville 2 pts., Ashley Colan 4 pts., and Zaida Smith 2 pts. Coming off the bench and contributing with great defensive play were Amanda Bruno, Katie White and Molly Meka.
   With the win, it sets up another confrontation between St. Dominic’s and St. Stephen's for the Play-Off Championship. The game will be played at the St. Stephen’s gym on Wednesday, February 4th at 7:45 p.m.
   The team is coached by Head Coach and Manager Pat Neville and Ass’t Coach Brendan Conway.

St. Stephen's Church Holy Name Society sponsors a yearly essay contest for grades 6th, 7th, and 8th. This year's topic was "How Can You Put Christ Back in Your Christmas This Year?" The first place winner receives a bond and a trophy, and the runners up receive a trophy. The 6th grade winner this year was Thomas Gagola with runners up being Jacob Frosolone and John Sosnowski. In 7th grade the winner was Katie Grace White, and runners up were Richard Shanor and Alexander Lenz. The winner in 8th grade was Nick Egloff, with runners up being Daniel O'Farrell and Grace Olszewski. Standing with the children is the their teacher, Mrs. Daniela Schmidt, and Mr. Peter Krupczak from the Holy Name Society.
