Vikings lose to Pioneer, end season with 8-2 record
With high spirits and a large entourage of family and friends, the Grand Island Varsity Vikings hit the Ralph Wilson Stadium field in Orchard Park Saturday afternoon with high hopes.
Grand Island, going into the Section VI Class A title game with an 8-1 record against the Pioneer Panthers, held the Pioneers to only 14 points but gained only 55 yards rushing and 19 yards passing.
Coach Gene Masters, who started Grand Island's football program in 1963, ended his long career with Saturday's title game. A member of the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame with only four losing seasons in his 44-year career, Coach Masters will retire as the
winningiest public school coach in Western New York history.
