GI Youth Wrestling Club 1/31/10 Competition - Winter 2010

The Grand Island Youth Wrestling Club competed in the Lew-Port Youth Wrestling tournament on Sunday, Jan 31, 2010 bringing home three 1st, three 2nd, two 3rd, and three 4th places. The boys continue to work very hard every week and did a great job! (front left) Coach Marty, Dylan Graff, Easton Speers, Justin Jarka, and Coach Anthony. (Back left) Coach Nick, Tanner Speers, Aaron Noyes, Joe Verdi, Brandon York, Noah Teater, Joe Jarka, and Vinny Collis.

GI Youth Wrestling Club - Jan. 2010


On January 10th, eight boys from the GI Youth Wrestling Club attended their first tournament of the season hosted by the Quaker Wrestling Club in Orchard Park with great results. Pictured above left are Coach Henry, Justin Jarka (1st), Joe Verdi (1st), Dillon Graff (3rd), Joe Jarka (1st) Henry Grunzweig (1st), Bailey Kephart (1st), and Noah Teator. Missing from the photo is Austin Fisher. The boys worked very hard and all did a great job!




GI Youth Wrestling Club Registration - Dec. 2009
The Grand Island Youth Wrestling Club will be starting Monday, Jan 4, 2010 at 6 p.m. in the High School upstairs gym. The registration fee is $45.00. Ages 8- 14. Registration forms are with the gym teachers. If you have any questions call Anthony at 775-0614.

   On February 22, the Section 6 Youth Wrestling Championships were held at the Lancaster Field House. Seven boys from the Grand Island Youth Wrestling Club participated. Joe Verdi and Joe Jarka won their divisions becoming Section 6 Youth Champions. Placing third was Henry Grunzweig and Conner Buzby. Particpating and doing very well in their divisions were Corey Wilkinson, Noah Teater, and Austin Fisher. Congratulations to all the boys!

   On Sunday, February 8, The GI Youth Wrestling Club brought 17 wrestlers to compete at the Ken-Ton Youth Wrestling tournament with over 400 competitors.The boys brought home many trophies for the team!     The GI Youth Wrestling Club brought eight boys to the Lew-Port wrestling tournament on Sunday, February 1st. Five of the club members are first-year wrestler and all placed in the novice divisions. Again, congrats to all the boys for their hardwork.     The Grand Island Youth Wrestling Club was off to a good start at their first tournament for the season held in January 2009 by the Lockport Kids Club. There were over 350 competitors at the tournament. All the boys did a great job in their divisions. Pictured above (left photo - left front) are Jarod Brandon and Joe Santa Lucia; (back) Joe Verdi (3rd), Ryan Kennedy (2nd), Joe Jarka (1st) and Coach Marty Rastelli. Not pictured are Jacob Zimmerman (4th), Easton Speers (3rd), and Austin Fisher. Congratulations to all the boys for all their hard work!
   On a cold January 25, 2009 Sunday morning three boys from the Grand Island Youth Wrestling Club braved the weather and competed in the Canal Bash Wrestling Tournament held in Tonawanda. There were over 400 competitors at the Tournament. All three boys did a great job and placed in their division. Pictured (right photo) above (left to right) are Coach Marty Rastelli, Joe Jarka (1st Place), Joe Verdi (2nd Place), Jarod Brandon (3rd Place) and coach Nick Rastelli. Congratulations to the boys and the coaches for a job well done!




GI Youth Wrestling Club Registration - Dec. 2008
The Grand Island Youth Wrestling Club will be starting Monday, January 5 in the upstairs High School Gym. The school gym teachers have the registration forms if you are interested in joining the club.




Island Wrestling Club Fundraiser to Assist Anthony Genova:
Will Attend USA Wrestling National Championships - June 2008

   Grand Island High School student Anthony Genova, a member of the Grand Island Wrestling Club recently competed in the Northeast Regional USA Wrestling Championships. By placing 2nd in both Greco Roman and Folkstyle and a 5th place finish in Freestyle, he was selected to represent the state of New York at the National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota July 18 – July 26.
   Grand Island has not had a wrestler compete in a USA Wrestling National Championship in a few years and Anthony is looking for the support of the community to assist him in his goal of becoming a National Champion representing both New York State and Grand Island.
   USA Wrestling Team New York does cover some of the costs associated with the training camp and tournament. Members of the Grand Island Wrestling Club are holding a fundraiser from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, June 28 at the Brick Oven on Grand Island. Tickets are $25.00 and may be purchased in advance by calling 773-8747 or 228-2039.
   Donations may also be made by calling the above numbers.

GI Wrestlers Win At Nationals - Mar. 2008
    Thursday, March 20, 2008 . . . The Grand Island Youth Wrestling Club was well represented in the Brute Empire Nationals in Rochester, NY this past weekend.
   Grand Island High School junior, Lee Schuster, took 1st place in the 112 lb. weight class and sophomore Anthony Genova took 4th place in the 140 lb. weight class. This tournament draws over 1200 wrestlers from all over the Eastern United States. Both Lee and Anthony will be competing in the National High School Coaches Association Wrestling Tournament in Virginia Beach the week of March 26-29.

   The Grand Island youth wrestling team was off to a good start at the Lew-Port Youth wrestling tournament on Sunday, January 28th. GI Youth Wrestling Club Registration - Dec. 2007
The Grand Island Youth Wrestling Club will hold registration on Tuesday, December 18, 2007 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Grand Island High School upstairs gym. The cost is $45 (no checks please). For additional information call Jackie at 775-0614.




High School Wrestlers Place 2nd In National Tournament - 2007
Two Grand Island High School Wrestlers competed in the Gene Mills Eastern National Tournament in Baldwinsville, NY on April 28, 2007. Anthony Genova, a 9th grader at GIHS took 2nd in Cadet 140 lb. weight class. Lee Schuster, a GIHS 10th grader, took 2nd in Varsity 112 lb. weight class. Over 1500 wrestlers from across the Eastern United States entered the tournament.

   Members of the Grand Island Youth Wresting Club on Sunday, March 4, 2007 competed in The Alden Brawl for the Belt Tournament. This tournament brought in over 450 wrestlers from around the state and country. The boys did very well in their divisions.
